Anime Fan Service

Watched the first EP of Goshusho Sama Ninomiya Kun [ご愁傷さま二ノ宮くん] and while it was funny for a while, the fan service seemed to take over the whole show. It was like 2% plot and the rest fan service.
"Eyes" were bouncy and sometimes wet while pantsu was either being flashed on the screen or being handled. In fact, there was so much fan service that it erased my memory and I forgot the cute girls name.

From the first EP, we learn that the main girl has an aura which drains the energy of men and make them go wild over her - not surprising as she's wearing what seems to be next to nothing.

While I do like fan service from time to time, I do need a balance in my anime diet. Claymore for example had zero fan service. Darker than Black didn't have any fan service as far as I can remember either.
Having said that, I will keep Ninomiya on the watch list for now as Gundam 00 will keep the balance even - EP 02 was awesome! Although the Destiny series did have a touch of wobbly eyes...

After reading some of your comments however, I see that some of you hate fan service.
If you was to be stuck on a dessert island for the rest of your life and could watch only one type of anime, which will it be?

OP for Ninomiya below.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

Always black or white polls with you, danny :( I like a little bit of fanservice, but not too much. Claymore had some btw, in the ep where she undresses. The fact that all the Claymores were beauties was also fanservice, imho.

I quite like fan service! Fan service does not make an anime though. Most of my favourite series have very little.

Have you ever seen Agent Aika? Ive NEVER seen so many blatant panty shots in an anime EVER!

Depends on what sort of anime is it. If the anime is meant to have a deep story and serious things going on, then excessive fanservice will be a real hindrance. If the anime's rather light-hearted and doesn't seem to plan anything serious, then UNLEASH ADDITIONAL PANTYSHOTS AND BATH SCENES!

Heh gotta love fan service, "Colorful" is full of it.

If I were to get a future relationship I would have to be careful of the level of fan service! It's not necessarily a bad thing but too much of it in an anime that was originally set in a "serious" tone totally draws away from the anime, one reason why I wasn't really interested in Jinki:Extend.

Maybe the purpose of the anime was to be a fan service provider, Danny? While fan service is cool, I also like my mix of anime to balance everything out.

Ah, for me, the over-riding elements must be the storytelling and its characters, whether it's violent drama or school-time humor.

So if the fan service fits and serves as a highlight to the darker moments in a passionate story, then that's awesome. Meanwhile, mindless fan service can get old very quickly. =)

JKing, every show needs a balance between fan service and actual plot, a good anime is the one that balances all of those nicely. (i.e. FMP & haruhi) but that doesnt explain lucky star.... maybe full out fan service really is the best thing?

Well, in my opinion, too much fanservice kills the show.

Grenadier and Girls Bravo were rather amusing, but there was a sense of "Isn't that a bit too much?" or "Have they no shame?" at times.

I also heard that Divergence Eve is also a good series, but that fanservice doesn't give it justice.

For me, it is either full fanservice (lighthearted comedy), a bit of it (oopsies) or nothing at all (super seriousness). I'd vote for the second, even if 100% serious anime series are kind of refreshing sometimes.

Say, if guys didn't have that much testosterone, fanservice, T & A softcore and hentai wouldn't exist... right?

Yeah, yeah, I'll stop here. *Gives mic back*

Thinking back now, my vote was wrong...
I do like fanservice, but I don't absolutely require it on my anime.

Some of my favorite animes doesn't have fanservice at all. And lots that I watched and liked also doesn't. Lain, Pita-ten, Azumanga, Fruits Basket, Witch Hunter Robin, Kenshin, Studio Ghibli, Akira, Eva.... (it's a pretty long list, never noticed that).

Plotless animes with fanservice only are not my type also. Why? If I want that much fanservice without plot, I'll just watch hentai or something (given that there are some hentais with a pretty good plot).

I remember at least a couple of animes I dropped due to too much fanservice... like Aika and all those panty shots, and Ikkitousen.

Also, on Tenjou Tenge I liked the story from the past, which had far less fanservice, then the rest of the anime itself.

lol, yeah.. though there might be half-a-scene or half-of-two with the person in the middle of changing. but then again that would be well placed instead of being random. so i guess random is the key word.
it's really awkward if something is safe enough for kids until somewhere in the late middle or near the end and then boom hentai or gore and then back to safe for kids... etc..out-of-place would probably be a more proper word for my choice. so no out-of-place stuff for me.

Hmmm, its a good question.... but I think I'd have to go with romantic comedies. Stuff like Lovely Complex. It doesnt even have to be comedy, it can just be like Sand Chronicles. But I do like magical girl series... but alot of them are rom-coms, so they would fall under my catagory... lol. I just like lovely anime which makes you feel warm and fuzzy after watching it. Like Ouran High School did. That was an awesome series... Rom-coms all the way!!! I'd prefer less fan service really, but I pay attention to the story over the panties anyway.
