Most of the burogu coverage around the otakushpere about the Dragonball film has been negative but it doesn't look entirely bad from the trailer - well the effects look good at least. Nice bike.
Wonder if Dragonball will be worth watching more than the last Indy Jones film - was personally shocked at how boring it was. Watched half of it and threw in the towel.

Original text from FatBastard below.

Here's the new Dragonball trailer for the one or two members out there who still are hoping it won't be horrible. May the force be with you...

All other members: Please click with caution. Everytime you play it an angel cries and falls from the heavens. It's true, I swear.

Are you kidding? It's so bad, they've destroyed it so much it's ungodly. You should NOT go see this film just so that the evil money-leeching directors DON'T actually get paid for ruining every damn idea that comes along.

Originality may be dead, but this is something else.

further it is because Hollywood steals ideas from anything popular they can find and Americanize it. people who never saw the original dragon ball will be like omg this is so awesome.

same thing with Fast and the Furious : Tokyo Drift... such a rip off of Initial D

            I cringed at the "Evolution."

              Americanize:
              Synonyms: Dumb-down, water-down, cheapen, ruin, negative-alteration.

              Used in a Sentence:

The anime's artwork and story was too complicated for the American audience so they had to "Americanize" it by having a monkey redraw it and an even louder monkey dub it.

(oh I can go on but Americanizing ANYTHING from Japan has been the bane of otaku for years ~_~)

If they changed the title of the movie, then it wouldn't be such a big deal. It could be like Forbidden Kingdom, a crappy movie white people + martial arts. And if they did, it might not be as bad. But Hollywood had to take something with established characters, storyline, etc. and completely mess with it.

Under no circumstance should anyone pay to watch this movie. People should not support Fox by paying for this movie. If your grandma was being held hostage by Fox and the only way to get her back was to buy a ticket for this, you tell your grandma you're sorry and it's been nice knowing her. That's about how bad it is for me. Dragonball was one of the first anime I've watched.

I think you should see this as very loosely based on a manga from Akira Toriyama.
But it looks like some nice (american) action.

But at least there's one thing cool about the movie, Ayumi Hamasaki is doing the theme song (worldwide in japanese!).

Take Dragon Ball (the memory of it you have in your head) and completely throw that away. Just get rid of it.

Now go see this movie, and laugh your ass off. Because this will be pure comedy. They must have been going for the comedy angle. That's the only reason something like this would ever get made.

I have mixed emotions with this trailer. First felt like crying: "How can they even name it DB?!"
Then I thought how stupid this is: dragonballs have individually magic powers, the "capsule" transformed lol
DBZ fans will hate it but I'm afraid that others could think "wow, what a great Hollywood movie!"... nah, it will fail.

I think the movie would actually be worse if they tried to translate everything that was in the original story into live action. Imagine watching the actors being thrown around smashing through buildings, conjuring up fireballs, squatting and crying out as they power up... Don't think it would work so well.

Anyway, I say just watch this as a complete separate piece of work.

ok now we need to get things straight here and yes im going to defend this movie. First off Hollywood didnt steal it akira toriyama and steven chow have been in talks for a while becuase "AKIRA" wanted this to happen. NOT hollywood, it just so happens fox jumped on it first. Second Fox jumped on it first and they where the only ones becuase its DRAGON BALL darn it. How do you make dragon ball a movie, you cant but you sure as heck can do your best at making it!!! Now then for the rest of you haters, before ou go making remarks about a movie you havent seen yet think about this dragon ball sucked story wise since it started the same plot is used ove3r and over again and nothing changes. It was a joke comic in the sunday jump magazine and thats what it was ment to be just like ninja turtles from heavy metal it just got freaken popular for its ecchi humor and fight scenes. And to make matters worse those didnt even get to america no we got DBZ so we didnt even know about the rest for a while. This is dragonball not dbz, The fight scenes have to be crazy and cged cause again its dragonball. Stop freaken hatting and watch the movie if you call your self an otaku then be one this trailer looks better than someof the DBZ videogames out there so that proves enough that this could be good.

as said.. every fan of anything that gets remade or transfered to another medium gets upset when plotline a is not right, or character b isn't how i pictured him.. i'm sure a number of harry potter fans are upset at the movies for slash and burning the books for what they want...

but, atleast harry potter follows the books... i hate movies, or even series "cough, toloveru" that deviate from there source material in a epic way...

me.. i'll watch it... probably laugh since i am a DB fan.. but just might enjoy it cuz i don't have any predispositions on what i'm about to see.. good or bad.. and i judge on what i'm presented with... doesn't mean that i'm not upset when i don't see something in a movie that should be there ( xmen 3... Phoenix is a firebird not a zoombie!... you idiots!)

so in the end.. love it hate it... its there.. watch it... and laugh... histerically... or not.. and just pray that somebody comes along and does a faithfull remake of it "cough, starship troopers, cough, stop making crap sequals so someone can make a faithfull remake closer to the book!. cough"

...well...I prettymuch expected a generic Hollywood totally-not-DB production. But seriously...I think that instead of raving like I could, I will just say the best thing to say is, that they shouldn't have named it Dragon Ball because it DOES NOT follow ANY of the ideas/plots/themes/characters/styles/ or anything but the idea of energy attacks. Everything that they tried to do that was supposed to be "like" DB, was crap. However I should admit alot of the effects are nice. It really should just be another movie, replace the character names, name of movie, and it would be better. Because this is so far from any idea of the original classic, but expected from Hollywood. ~_~ Nothing can ever be made how you wish it would.

I honestly dont know how they arent following the plot its pretty much dragon ball piccolo comes back tries to mess crap up goku and friends come and slap him in the face for being a naughty green yoshii. Nough said on that dragon ball had no plot kill bad guys with un real attacks go home, do it again in 25 episodes oh yea and monolouge for 5 episodes to save time to come up with more plot. I mean its like bolt said its there watch it i mean seriously how many of us grew up on DB. It was our childhood dream to see this on the big screen and now we are "all grown up" and think that by this movie being made is a disgrace to .....what...thats right nothing its being made to please us because we used to love it.

    What. The. Hell.

    Dragonball Devolution indeed.

I mean, I'm not even a fan of the original series, and that trailer still made me cringe.

I was half-hoping that they'd surprise us and actually make something that looked like quality, but what IS that. It's certainly not Dragonball.

This goes beyond being based on an anime, it's taking the worst generic martial arts script and slapping a famous franchise name on it because it sure as hell won't sell by itself.

Trailers are supposed to catch our attention and give us a slice of how a movie will be. Regardless of this being Dragon Ball by name, it's pretty lame.

And Roshi is not an baldy grandpa with a turtle shell on his back?? that's it me won't watch.

Wow, where do I even begin? The special effects don't look half bad. I think most people are complaining about the plot/story. Its definetely for an American audience, maybe this is why I don't watch TV anymore :

They really should have had at least one full moon transformation into a giant monkey (some people say ape but I say its a monkey only because they have a tail), lol. Too much martial arts, we all know that any martial arts was totally lost after the first episode. Well, at least it doesn't have Brolly or Garlic Jr. in it...

Funny how people immediately look down at this as if they are Dragon Ball experts.

Because Dragon Ball itself started off as a story called "Dragon Boy" and was also based on a Drunken Master movie. During that time, Toriyama himself was prepared to finish up on Dr. Slump.

During the time the series was popular, the first live action movie was made. That movie makes this one look like an Academy Award winning movie. Yes, it was that bad.

Then we have the changes. Amazingly, I have to give it the reason of the doubt. Because it was made to be a martial arts action flick. Yes, the characters and story have changed and blah blah blah. Then again, I hear nobody complain about how they constantly change Final Fantasy or Mobile Suit Gundam.

In other words... Movies based on franchises like this DO NOT have to be based on the actual style. Because the anime was not the same compared to the manga, nor were the movies 100% tied into the anime series.

Then again... I can other movies based on comics and video games that were butchered. And even if they are considered to be in their own "canon" timeline, it felt like they did not even bother going with the feel those things created.

So... For the hell of it... I might see this and see if it was crap or not. :3

Drunken Master was used as inspiration for Dragon Boy, doesn't belong to the Drunken Master franchise. This movie clearly uses the franchise, is not just inspired (like say Lion King and Kimba)

Maybe you don't hear them complain, I complain a whole lot when Final Fantasy games turn out crappy. BTW Final Fantasy games aren't supposed to be connected to each other, each is an independent story and sometimes they make spin-offs or whatever.

hey we are complaining not because they change the story, the movie aint out yet so how would we know about the story to be complaining about it. we are complaining after watching the trailer which make us FEEL it is **** compared to the original series. i would call it **** whether it is called dragonball or not. well, look at it, LOOK AT THE TRAILER and please be honest to yourself, do you think it would be a great movie ? and please forget about the names, just see the trailer. if it is call chicken ball i would still say it is ****. please don't think all those who complained are simple minded that only supported the original series.

Its fun to watch just for kicks. I feel that this movie will be a flop in the Dragon Ball Franchise.

I would probably advise die hard Dragon Ball fans not to see it. Turn a blind a eye, pretend you never heard of it before.

Children, kids, they would be the ones who will be seeing the movie. Kids likes special effects and action flicks.

Ingredients to make a bad Dragonball movie:

Step 1; In a big bowl add the following:
    - 1 x Dragonball concept
    - 1 x dash of Disney flavor
    - 10 x Bad actors
    - 2 x hot girls
Step 2; Add a sprinkle of too much action, bad storyline, and a prayer.

Step 3; Throw it in the oven for a few months.

Step 4; Ding! its ready, Top it off with a bit of over marketed hype, and you got yourself the perfect way to throw out $15!

    Cheers! d~~p

I gotta say that it looks like a decent movie, BUT definitely a horrible DB movie.
They should've changed the title to "Shaolin Dragon : Evolution" or something,
there's too much kung fu in this movie's trailer.

Well I must say that the first few seconds seemed a bit promising but then went downhill after that.

Which one is Chi-Chi in the film? Bulma looked cute. Everything else was out of place.

For the most part they made this film not just for American audiences but basically all Western audiences as movies with this much action often have to rely on world wide grossing to rake in money.

I doubt this movie will be a box office hit in the States and even internationally. Considering the budget spent seems to be over $100m they at best may make even.

If you watch it as a dragonball related film, it sux. But as a film itself, it still sux, just not as bad. Has pretty decent effects so far, but the plot looks like some Disney kid-mysteriously-chosen-to-fight-old-school-evildoers-and-goes-through-some-special-training-by-some-old-dude-that-used-to-be-great-meets-some-chick-that-kid-likes-along-the-way-and-beats-up-said-evildoer-to-save-said-chick film. So, it's being done by fox. The only reason i'd watch it is because it's being done by an american studio. Because japanese life action films make me want to gauge my eyes out. I'm a death note ADDICT but the minute i saw Ryuk rendered like a SEVERELY distorted pixar character i stopped the movie immediately. haha despite all the negative fanfare surrounding this, i am kinda intrigued by FOX's interpretation of the franchise. they are obviously trying to carter to the mainstream audience here. and as much as i hate to say it, dragonball fanatics form a small portion to the market audience they are trying to attract, and that's just not gonna cut it for them. so it's understandable that FOX would take this route albeit a disappointing one.

In the manga/anime, Piccolo is the evil half of Kami (Earth's god in the Dragonball universe, who happens to be an alien in the first place ^^;). I guess this is where Hollywood got the idea from.

Apart from the familiar names, nothing in this movie resemble the Dragonball I know. I suppose these days, adding 'Evolution' to a movie title justifies its non-relevance to the source material.

I can not understand why can't they just have some basic respect for the origin.
I mean I would agree that it's would be rather difficult to live-action dragon ball.

But look at it. It speaks *Beeping* Hollywood all over it.
I has none of the charm, none of the feel and none of the action.

I believe that it's not what they could do, but what THEY think is cool.
I think this is even worst then those Class B cult parody that people are willing to take a good laugh at on youtube. (not flaming youtube has nothing good!)

beside the special effect, I see nothing that could separate this from a very poorly made fans video.
If you ask me, I rather that they just make a cheap rip off where they don't use the name and the characters.

Can't Hollywood learn? Hasn't Godzilla taught them anything? I mean, don't just get on the bandwagon because all those DC and Marvel comic translation has done well. Manga is different, it has it's own style, it's own life.

Replace the trademarks, like character names and the shape of the balls to something else, like fragments of a sword or anything and what do you get? Nothing like dragon ball what so ever, so why calling it a dragon ball movie?

Fox basically paid for a name, that's like an admission of defeat by itself.

It's actually not Dragon Ball Z.
It's kinda a cross universe between the original Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z.
Since Goku learn "kame-hame-ha" during Dragon Ball and Master Roshi character kinda disappear very early during Dragon Ball Z, but Piccolo is from Dragon Ball Z.

Forget the story, it's just messed up.

I never cared for Dragon Ball Z. It was one of the few animes that I tried to like, but just never could. I have had no exposure to the manga, so maybe that is part of it. Based on this, I am rather indifferent about the movie. Some of the special effects looked good, others looked very over used in the trailer for me.

I shall be skipping the movie, not because it is a horrible corruption of Dragon Ball Z, but because it is supposed to be about DBZ.

Hmmm... well, i think it wont be even close if you want to compare it to the original story. But nowadays i judge the show by itself and not by the typical "compared to manga/novel" stuffs. And i might believe they doesnt really want this movie storyline to be based on the actual manga.

Ultimately even if the show sucks big time, i would applause for them if the visual effects, sound and the action tension is there.

I thought "Dead or Alive's" movie was bad. This is worse. I am not the biggest "Dragonball" fan, but still. While I'm at it, I won't bother with "Tekken's" and "Soul's" (yes as in "Soul Edge" and "Soul Calibur") either. I actually think it looks pretty cool!!! I really want to watch it!!! I looks like Stephen Chow's style.
I think it's way better to make it very different from the anime, cause it makes it original and I think if they had made a copy of the anime I would have never been good enough to people. The only complain is that piccolo looks like the mask...but well...that's unimportant haha

I've been following this and blogging about it for over a year now. If I never saw Dragon Ball; I'd think this looks pretty cool and I do like this new trailer...but I'm an otaku and a HUGE DBZ fan! For goodness sakes, my user name in everything on the internet is "princetrunks". This is not Dragon Ball at all!! This seems like a movie made by someone who just simply heard of the characters...that's it. I'm a Stephen Chow fan but this takes a cherished anime and spits on it. I wonder what Akira Toryama is thinking when he sees this.

It may not exactly be Dragonball, it'd be impossible to completely replicate the original and make everyone happy, but I still think it looks good. I'll be going to the theaters for this one! :3

Since I knew about the movie and the first attempts of the trailer that I hated the movie on Dragon Ball, so although not improve the verification for any reason, is murder to what is the story and the characters of Dragon Ball

Looks good to me. I make it a point TO NOT BASH A MOVIE UNTIL I GET TO WATCH IT or if I don't get to watch it, then until other people have reviewed it AFTER WATCHING IT. You'll never know if it actually turns out to be good and all that negativity comes back at you.

As a DBZ film, it will be an abomination. But as a film on it's own merits it does look quite entertaining. Shame they had to ruin so many fans' childhood memories of the series, mine included.
