Japan Indiscriminate Stabbings

A man drove his car into a woman aged 36 sending her flying. He then got out of his car and started to stab away at her back with a fruit knife before deciding to stab himself in the stomach.
Both of them are in critical condition and the man is unconscious.
The woman said that she did not know who the attacker was.

Reminds me of the Akiba killings where a man drove his car into a crowd and got out to stab them.
The TV news over here is not all grim though. Remember watching TV on a visit back to the UK noticing that nearly all news was about people being stabbed or shot. News in your region depressing too?

1/ after what happened, thinking that she is alive, makes me think that she belongs to the clan of Heroes and that she can heal from her wounds ;)

      or

2/ this man is really bad at killing people including himself

he is unconscious but alive means he failed to do seppuku ^^

jeez, how can someone fail stabbing himself ???

        it hurts
also, a stab in the intestines is fatal because of the blood loss
so it won't kill him if the wound was treated ASAP
i'm not a doctor, but i'm sure seppuku hurts like hell

i dun think this guy have guts to open up his guts, this is why he fail

No, this guy probably played video games or watched anime some time in his life, which is of course the direct cause of this. Probably used video games as a training tool in order to do it in real life which just goes to show that anime and video games are tools spread by the devil or something stupid like that.

The most recent "depressing" news here is about a shootout between the police and robbers near my neighborhood. Two civilians; a father and his daughter, were accidentally mistaken of being one of the robbers and were killed during the event. People now look at the cops badly, saying that they shouldn't have shot at the two because it was obvious they were innocent. The police didn't follow proper procedures BUT what people fail to realize is the intensity of the shootout; pretty hard to tell which ones are the robbers and which ones are innocent civilians. Even if the police did follow proper procedures, there was still a high probability that civilians will get involved. In other words, I'm on the police's side x_x

Other than that we have some bit of news from the conflict between the rebels and the military in Mindanao, more local crimes, and on the brighter side Pacquiao winning his fight, Christmas shopping tips, and achievements of OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers).

Pretty average stuff. A mix between bad and good IMO.

i understand what its like the police don't just shoot at people for the fun of it people should understand that
and in this case its everyones fault what were those civilians doing there ? and how did they get to be involved in the shooting ? also what were the police doing they should've secured the entire zone
reminds me of the casablanca terrorist attacks here crowds of people were on the streets that kind of stuff is so unusual here people went down to the streets to look at the action lol
but it made it easier for one of the terrorists to blend in and sneak up to a police man and kill him

You've lived in the UK, so you already know the doom and gloom on UK news.

Soldiers killed in Iraq/Afghanistan, children being abused, kidnapped, killed, murders, rapes, thefts, stabbings, shootings and so on and so on. I don't watch the news, I read news websites, then I can only read the nicer parts.

Nothing will compare to the horror of seeing the London Bombings on the news. I don't live in London, but I was so horrified to see that.

Those bombings occurred about 1 km away from where I used to live. In fact, I oftentimes used to transfer from a bus to the subway ("the tube") at Kings Cross station-- where the bombs exploded. Had I still been living in London, I may have been killed.

I hate the news here, everytime i read the newspaper i wan to puke

There is too much politics, and I feel the main newspapers is bias onto one side of the political party.

Everyday you get stupid news of political parties arguing on issues like:
    - changing the road name
    - having road sign with multiple language
    - petrol price increase
    - how to waste tax payers monies in buying up useless companies which happens to be company of some relative of some of the ministers
    - how the government only decided to do something after a major accident
    - increasing import duties
    - bla bla bla, come on anyone from the same country, please add on to the list

Well, the newspaper is controlled by Barisan Nasional and if anyone who wants to pick a bone with the system will get arrested. Its sickening. To add to that list, one would be the so-called "compulsory" "National Service" to "improve the relationship between the races" that I think is a complete waste of money. Military training? Hah! Even Singapore can do a better job than us in the military training department!

So true. Everyday the news in Malaysia is insane propaganda. The worst offender of the news here is probably the Home Minister, who is making a clown of himself in most interviews.

Hey, we'd just released a 9/11 terrorist suspect, because he's no longer a threat to the country. Oh look, RPK is at it again, throw him into ISA detainment camp. Oh hey, Chow Kit is too shady of a place and I'm worried for the safety of the police, so we'll move them away (later the excuse was changed to "landowner wants the lot back").

Simply put, it's bad comedy. Save for the recent landslide tragedy in Bkt Antarabangsa. That too was most likely the outcome of some duit-kopi approval.

As a Malaysian, I can't really be proud of Malaysia. Its a nice place but at the way things are going, Malaysia might be doomed. Change? Highly unlikely if we consider the religion, politics, race and corruption issues. Regarding the landslide, I wouldn't be surprised that it was duit-kopi money. As a civil engineer, I feel ashamed by the low standard of care that resulted in the landslide.

I dont pay much attention to the local news, but thats because nothing ever happens out here, and if something does, everyone talks about. So pretty much the only depressing thing about the news here, is that there is little of it.

Sad thing is, most Angelenos don't care one way or another whether or not someone was killed or shot unless it's in their immediate vicinity. It's happened so much that people are really desensitized to murders as much as horrible traffic accidents.

Perhaps not as gruesome or brutal as this... but I've actually been hearing about incidents such as stabbings or shootings on a regular basis around the Toronto area. The most openly assault that I can recall at the moment is a shooting in the middle of Toronto's biggest mall on Boxing Day. Whats freaky was that I was there that day... but left well before the shooting occurred. There are probably more brutal ones but that one sticks out the most as a publicly committed crime with plenty of people around.

My then-girlfriend knew the victim personally. It made the whole incident that much more real for me. That was more a gang fight with innocents caught in the crossfire than a random shooting though.

Unfortunately, news like this no longer shocks me. The random killing in Akiba did, simply because there was no motivation behind it, but now even that is becoming more and more common.

My friends often say, "Oh, I don't want to go to Scarborough. I don't want to get shot!" I thought it was a joke at first but the more I listen, it seems to be true. Not limited to just Scarborough either. I grew up thinking Toronto was relatively safe and I thought the same for Akiba as well but these incidents... well the frequency and methods kind of tell otherwise.

x_x" The shooting was downtown though. As for Scarborough - don't know if you remember, but I live there and it's actually nowhere as bad as the media make it out to me. They're very isolated incidents in a very small area of Scarborough.

There's no denying that violent crime and shooting is on the rise though, for all of TO.

Stabbings. They're everywhere. First in akiba, now this. Good thing the lady survived despite the stabs she received on her back. And as for the man, he thought his hara-kiri would make him escape what he's done so good thing he was unconscious. Why must people do senseless things? It's so depressing just to think about it.

According to wikipedia they are called "air gun (pellet)"

I think it would be correct to consider them real guns in the law. Some people think they only work with plastic balls, but it's actually possible to metal bullets. Some metal bullets can be deadly, meaning it's a lethal firearm without the bang from the exploding gunpowder.

I once tried shooting with one againt empty beer cans (no, I wasn't drunk). It turned out that one shot at a range of 10 meters could go though a can and it could make a hole of around 5 cm in diameter. It also twisted the metal of the entire can, making the height shorter and the whole can was bending. It scared me that it's this powerful and that you can get one here if you are at least 18 (AFAIK nothing else is checked)

I know. They don't have gunpowder so some people see them as toys. It's not even uncommon for kids here to have such weapons.

I was 13 or 14 when I tried the can shooting (alone), but at that time I had already learned about weapon safety and aiming theory because I had had shooting practice for half a year where trained adults told me what to do. Also I am like I am so I would claim that I acted more resposible back than (I still do btw) than quite a lot 18 year olds.

The danger lies in giving guns like that to people at any age failing to understand what they are dealing with or if they understand and wants to abuse the power it can give them. I would rather give a loaded gun to a 12 year old I trust than I would give it to a 20 year old I don't know or trust.

I support the Japanese solution where the normal population isn't allowed to have guns. Organized crime can still get them, but organized criminals knows that they will give themself to the police if their kids run around with guns.

There are two kinds of criminals. The first and most common is the criminal who has some sort of underlying rational reason for committing their crime (money, power, respect, etc). This means that it is possible to adjust your laws and society to remove their reasons for committing the crime in the first place.

The second kind of criminal is the crazy one. You really can't do anything to prevent crazy criminals because they're unpredictable. They'll keep on doing their thing no matter what the laws or social mores are.

You can minimize the rational crimes because those have addressable reasons and causes, but you can never eliminate the crazy crimes because there are no reasons and causes to address. Fortunately, the crazy ones are much more rare than the rational ones.

It's well known that some countries have more murders than others. I found this graph on wikipedia http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2b/Intlhomrate.svg
I'm surprised by two things. The first is that I thought USA had more murders, but I guess that's hidden by your high population. The other thing that scared me is South Africa... I knew it was bad, but not that it was this bad. Looks like almost 160 people are killed every day o_O

I read that the newspapers in India tried to get more readers by making the "doomsday machine" more and more sure to make a black hole that will swallow the whole planet. When somebody read that scientists were about to kill her she committed suicide.

I think it's sick when media tries to alter reality for their own profit. It happens everywhere though.

To quote Doctor Breen, "it's safer here" in Singapore. Murders and the likes are extremely rare here, though they can be quite nasty and gruesome when it happens (disemberment, rape-and-kill of minors, etc.). We do get quite a lot of executions here, but they're mainly due to drug related offences (drug trafficking, usually) instead of murder.

I don't like the media here. Whenever they talk about something I know about then they talk garbage. I mean it's like they have no idea of what they are talking about. Once at the first of April, the police issued a press release about a fire in a harbour in some town. The town has no harbour since it's located far from the coastline. Without realising that, the media hurried to be the first to broadcast it and after a few hours the police had to send a new press release telling that it was a joke. By that time it would appear that no journalists had discovered the problem >.<

On top of that they have a clear political agenda. The TV stations (mainly one) wants a red government. They have been busted for faking documentaries (best example is their story about soldiers in Afganistan with a video that turned out not to be recorded in Afganistan). They were also busted for favouring one party during an election campaign. The law states that they can't pick favorites since they are funded though tax money (so no pro or against government stuff by law)

They are also extremely pro EU. They want us to forget about our own culture state and we should just import cultural events from elsewhere and let EU decide on the laws.

Since more and more people realise this then less people trust the news. Naturally I have to limit that statement to the people I talk to because no media will call themselves untrustworthy.

So we have freedom of press since the politicians aren't telling what they should tell, but somebody else controls something and they have a political agenda. The neutral news can't be found. (and to be honest, I think you will have to be naive to think it will even happen)

At least newspapers tend to be somewhat more trustworthy... some of them at least.

That's Ueno isn't it? Is that where it happened?

We had something kind of similar happen here in Metro-Vancouver area last month. Metrotown is a popular shopping center (especially this season...oh gosh...) with Crystal Mall (the asian mall) right next to it. Anyways, some guys (6) were whipping belts at eachother and they ran through the mall ending when 2 guys were sent to the hospital with stab wounds. It's creepy being there now.

Sad... bu I guess stuff like that can happen anywhere.

It's also a downside of having a society that's kinda uptight. But I could live with that.

But I guess japanese companies and government should work some way to reduce work stress and stuff... not that this was the reason here, but I can see it being.

It's also ironic how stuff like these are heppening just at the same time the "westernizing" process seems to be going on in Japan.

we get some bad news like that lately as well... but recently we've been having the whole deal about the coalition (now it's over though). basically for the non-canadians, two of our opposition parties (with a third one helping out) wanted to merge and take over power in Canada.... our Prime Minister obviously wanted to stop that... and so they were all like debating over the legitimacy of that and stuff... in the end though, the coalition didn't happen

Not much in my neck of the woods besides the occasional drug bust, but in terms of serious crimes, I'm fortunate to say that there really isn't that much.

Unfortunately, you would not know that if you watched the local news. Of course, most of my local news originates from the major metropolitan area about ninety minutes down the road.

We get some odd news here. Sure, there are the shootings and the like (I live between Saginaw and Flint. And Detroit is only an hour and a half away.) but then you hear about the hunter who shot his own car because the parking break failed and he thought it was a deer. Or the guy who fell out of his tree stand and died, when if he had cleared the fallen branches around the tree, he would have only busted his shoulder.
Sometimes I wonder if idiots live north of Bay City. Then I remember that there are idiots everywhere, and I despair for the human race. You guys are boned.

Preasure from work, family, friends, people and life. Not able to cope with problems and stress, leads them to find relieve. The sad thing is people will always try to find the shortest way to relieve themselves, and usually the shortest way is not the best way.

all things considered, japan still has a relatively low crime rate compared to the rest of the world, albeit the recent rise in stabbings like this is a real cause for concern. they might want to rethink their culture, which i think is an impetus to creating a society that ostracises some people and an elitist mentality among the working-class.
