Anime VS Manga

Many manga make it over to anime. Some of the results are good, some bad, some just plain average.

I have not read the manga for Claymore so cant comment on the differences. Reading many comments about the anime version of Claymore, it looks like many preferred the anime adaptation to follow the original manga. Is that a totally bad thing that anime doesnt truly follow the original manga? I guess it depends on the series. Watching the same story in anime could be boring for some where a different story would be more interesting.

For me, I preferred the manga version of Inuyasha (love Kagome-chan), Ranma 1/2 and Crayon Shin-chan. Especially Shin-chan - the manga seemed to have a ton of adult and poo jokes in it which never made it to the TV and yet the manga was also being read by children.

The anime that I really did prefer over manga was KochiKame which is sadly not on TV anymore. Which do you think is generally better?

Tough choice, I'd say manga since its how a series starts out & the art style is usually better. Alot gets changed/edited when its converted to anime, and the results vary. I did like full metal panic/tsr anime turned out, my favourite.

I would say it all started with manga, so if one is determined to get the true story with the true intentions of the author, then manga is the #1 choice. Many anime selections do stay true to the manga version, and sometimes anime can be preferred over manga. I love both, and will continue to read/view both. It really is controviersial over which one is truly better: each anime and manga that is married together is a special, unique case that many people will have different opinions on.

Yeah, tough one for me too. I would say Anime though (in general). And just to recap Claymore; it was (sure as hell) the anime.

But not understandning Japanese, I have to relie on the ever present fansubs or translations or what not. And I bet a lot of what 'makes' a manga vs. an anime is easier lost in the manga.

Anime which created after the manga gone famous ussualy sucks! Dunno why but the anime seems to add a lot of rubbish into the original story! Just look at Naruto and Bleach, the story are nothing compare to the original manga! Anime is a plain ripped off of money from consumer!

Both anime and manga are awesome.

That's what I like about the Japanese system, they first start off with MANGA, and if it becomes popular enough to warrant a ANIME they make it, and if that is good they make LIVE-ACTION.

Reduce the risk.... and maximize profit.

Yeah and let's not forget the merchandising (figurines, games, magazines, game shows, etc).

    Excellent way to do business!

i do think there are some titles where the anime came before the manga. i believe those that have multiple media forms have mixed their routes a lot.. (game, anime, manga, live-action, audio drama.. no specific order) some starting from one media and going through some route of media, then others start with another and go another route..

although i love anime, i prefer reading manga more.

one of the the good things about anime adapted from manga is that they make the characters look better visually.

what i mean is that as we all know, manga artists' drawing style improves and change over the years as the series progesses. anime generally makes the best out of author's artwork. take for example claymore, clare looks prettier and more mature in the anime as compared to the early chapters of the manga. in the manga she looks younger.

I used to like anime, because manga was pretty rare back then in my hometown. Few years later when I have full access to both anime & manga, I prefer manga better. The reason is because manga is more detailed in terms of art & storyline.

Sure, anime with different story could be nice as long as it doesn't go overboard like the dreaded 100 (or was it 150?) random poo filler Naruto episodes.

I used to read the manga before the anime, then I realized that is not a good idea because once you read the manga, the anime turns boring because almost all the time you know what will be happends, so now I always watch first the anime and then the manga and that way is more fun, also what I dont like about manga is that in just 2 or 3 hours you can read all the story, and in anime you have to watch it slowly :D

It really depends. I sometimes think the manga, but a lot of the shows I love were anime before manga (Evangelion, Lain, Mai-HiME) and others there is no manga (Haruhi) and others the manga just isn't as good (NHK) so it's hard for me to say. But putting my favorites aside, the anime that actually is based on manga varies in comparison. For instance, Mushi-shi anime is unquestionably better than the manga, because it's freaking beautiful. Then we have one like Jing where the manga is a million times better. And then there's those like Gunslinger Girl who change things significantly and thereby make it worth seeing both. And some that are the same but you have to see both, like Hayate.

For me, when it's a good manga then I'd prefer the anime to stick to the original mateial coz I would like to see it get animated. BUt if it's otherwise, then feel free to change it to make it better. It's just as simple as that. ^^

Take death note for example. I liked how they followed the manga and all but the story in the manga went down after L died and I would have preferred if they changed it a little bit in the anime. Nonetheless it was pretty above average overall. XD

Each has their own strength depending on the material. For some things like Beck I feel the anime is better. Especially for Beck where the manga without the music just can't convey how awesome a band they are. While with the anime we have music and it really helps tell the story.

Claymore up until episode 20 where it branched away from the manga story line for its original ending was great. Out of 26 episodes I love the first 20. They did a great job of telling the story. Why they didn't just continue to adapt straight from the manga and make a second season in a few years I will never know.

I totally agree! The story change in the anime was pretty bad, especially how Clare just powered up and became ridiculously strong for no reason. It was obviously filler material, just like how Naruto becomes ridiculously weak during fillers.

I'm much more on the anime side.

I've yet to read a manga that has made me cry as effectively as anime does, without the music, the movement, etc. I just don't feel as "in" the manga as I do the anime.

Also, I've never liked the way action manga is written, it often ends up that I can hardly figure out who's hitting what... ~-~

Although, don't get me wrong, I read tonnes of manga, just normally only when there is not (yet) an anime. I'm on Vol.4 of Shugo Kyara at the moment, and the anime starts next month, so I may stop reading it then, if the anime is much better.

While I like anime a lot, often times it ends up being the shortened version of the "real thing". When the story continues in the manga for several volumes after the anime, ala Hagaren, it's a lot more satisfying to read the original manga up till the end. And for longer series like Bleach or Naruto, reading the manga is infinitely better than watching filler eps for a half of a year before they continue with the arc that they're on in the manga. Granted, a lot of the action scenes do end up looking better in the anime versions of stuff (Claymore springs to mind immediately), and I do enjoy an original story arc here and there, but for the most part manga > anime for me.

I love anime, but I dislike these kinds of comparisons. Manga is manga, anime is anime. Most manga-to-anime conversions can't possibly live up since you can get across much more consistent art and style in a page than tirelessly animating it on the screen with a lot of other factors mixed in.

But when anime does things well, it's amazing. Voice acting, the soundeffects, the music, the pace, the actual animation, etc etc.

I love manga, but I think the higher note lies with anime.

Manga or Anime? Anime or Manga? Good call. Manga would be preferred since some mangas looks much better than anime as Danny pointed out while others average to not so good. Manga are like the start out of anime storylines. Once its sold to public and gets popular. Then it has decide whether or not convert the manga to anime. I remembered there's a few sometimes it starts out with anime then to manga I cannot recall which ones. But possibly some older animes? Gundam has both manga and anime, so which is first? I can't say which i prefer. They're each so different and allow for a completely different experience. Anime is full of color, and movement, and music, and voices. Manga lets you absorb everything at your own pace. I tend to like manga for the detail, the "extra" story. But i couldn't say i like either one more.

Personally, i don't mind if an anime series deviates from the manga, because i'm not sure i'd watch an entire anime series if i'd read the manga and already knew exactly what was going to happen. It's nice to see when an anime closely follows the manga, but it's only interesting for so long. It's more fun for me if something else happens in the story, rather than what i'm familiar with.

the only bad thing about some animes adapted from on-going mangas is its draggy-ness and fillers.

firstly as we all know, the manga must be many chapters ahead of the anime. therefore some anime tend to drag and drag the story by showing insignificant stuffs like constant close-ups of the characters and monologues. one good example is nauto, a fight scene can drag for months!

secondly, fillers used to fill in the gap when the anime is about to catch up with the manga are usually boring which doesn't give us anything new for fears of conflicting with the manga.

well it comes to a personal choice of which ones better.. if you liked the manga/book storyline better than the anime/movie storyline.. asking why htey left this out or that out.. sometimes its just another mediuma nd needs to be changed for that medium..

something unique for manga based anime is that most of the time the manga is still being published when it gets picked up so sometimes you HAVE to comeup with a differnt ending or storylime since its not finshed yet ala full metal alchmist....

As a kid, I started out reading only manga since fansubbed back then wasn't that easily available like now. Now it seem that i have moved away from manga and watch only anime and enjoy it alot more. the thing that really bother me is that alot of anime that are based off of the manga never seem to have good ending at all or any sometime. It force me to go back and read the manga to find the ending the series deserve. At the moment i find myself back reading manga again since right now i don't have the time to get new fansubbed and watch them, i guess manga are a little bit more convenience since i can take it around with me and read it where ever.

Higher ratio of manga are better than anime imo. Flame Of Recca and Tenjo Tenge are prime examples though FoR manga is a really good read. Berserk also, even if the anime is good the manga version of the Band Of Hawks arc is even better.

Rahxephon is one of the few cases where anime is better than the manga. FM Panic also though theyre almost the same thing.

I like both, but in my experience I found a lot more depth and characterization in a manga rather than it's translated version in anime.

But that's not to say that manga is better, they both just diverge in two different directions even though it has the basically the same story, one example is Akira.

with manga you get a deeper story and better characterization, but when you get to the anime adaptation, it retains much of its character yet even with out some parts in the anime version it can still be very enjoyable as the original.

I always watch anime, I've hardly read any manga. I always think character design is much better in anime, and I like the look better. I always find the anime character an improvement and higher quality version of the manga.
Also one thing I like the most is the main difference between the two: anime is animated, which has its appeal and cannot be expressed that well on paper.
Although I really can believe that there may be bad adaptation and I will not question that. But I can't really compare, only now after watching anime for like 6-7 years, I've started to read some manga, mainly because I'm studying japanese :)

    Generally the art standard of

    Manga > Anime

    cos

Manga artist usually do not have too many "slaves" to work for them and hence better ot closer supervision, there are some artiists who did everything themselves and hence the slow pdtn rate.

Anime studios usually have an army of "slaves" sometimes even subcon to overseas studios and make use of overseas "slaves".

Unless one is a sucker for full color full animation, abeit lotsa anime nowadays have sucky animation in the sense that too many still frames instead of true full motion animation.

As many said before me, there are pros and cons for both of them.

    I'd prefer anime because of:

    - Songs and voice acting (praise seiyuu for their work!);
    - More expression of feelings, character, etc.
    - Animation (given it's not crappy and ridden with flaws... Did I say... fillers?)
    - Background music, other themes and special effects.
    -You don't need to buy dozens of manga (or borrow them or even browse through them in a shop at the risk to be kicked out from it. XD);
-If it's one episode per week, you can be pretty happy (again, if it's not about silly fillers).

    I'd prefer manga because of:

    - Original spirit (no darned nonsensical... fillers. You heard me right);
    - Generally more detailed drawings (sometimes ending to an endless mess);
    - Bonus pages describing characters and locations, maybe the story in more detail + the lifestyle and history of the author as well as concept sketches (I feel that the bonus section in DVDs are always missing a lot).

    And so on.

Did anyone noticed I hate fillers? Yeah? Okay, I'll disappear now. ;)

    Tricky question.
Usually, people will prefer the one they read/saw first.
Also works for books/movies and overall dubbing.

I like both. Few years ago I was more into anime. Now I don't have much time to watch them, so I'm more into manga.

Problem is, the mangas I like the most aren't available in Brazil, and I can't read mangas on a computer screen so I usually buy them on Amazon (USA) and pay an absurd amount of money for shipping. I mean, really really absurd... like 10 times the price of a manga.

But I love them. Currently reading Azumanga Daioh (already watched the anime, like them both equally), Yotsuba&, Dragon Head, Robot Color Comic (unfortunatelly cancelled), Nininga Shinobuden (watched it also - one of my favorites)...

Like other commenters already said, there are pros and cons on both media types. Some fit more Anime format, some fit manga format better.

Me? I'll try just about anything. And it's kinda hard for me to not like it. :P

Anime is such a general term these days. It isn't uncommon to discover anime that can be movies, OVA's, or even made into a series which is not strictly based on a manga. While the quality of substance may vary, there are often times when they result in something magnificent (case in point for an example in the present: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann).

When any manga (preferably ones I enjoy) is transformed into an animated piece it makes me heart filled with excitement (which is an understatement) if it is done properly. Visually seeing the dynamics of something that you read and digested on paper then brought to life with proper execution is truly a sight to behold.

It can be argued both ways that one approach (i.e. anime strictly adheres to manga) is better than another approach (i.e. anime partially based on manga). It ultimately depends on the multitude of factors such as but not limited to the producer, director, writers, seiyuu, and the studio.

So to answer your question, Danny, I enjoy both if it is properly executed.

As a general rule, I find that whatever the source material is, it will be better.

So a show like claymore, which was from a manga, will be better in manga form while a show like Gundam Seed started as a TV show and made into a manga and the TV show is vastly superior.

But even if they stay 100% faithful, the copy is usually inferior. Case in point, I love the Five Star Stories manga but the OVA, even though it's pretty much a carbon copy of the first Story, I found to be lacking in a lot of departments.

People usually prefer manga because it's what they read first. Or otherwise. Happens a lot in Brazil, since we have several times more manga titles than licensed anime titles.

Some folks like manga more because violence and sex are less censored.

I tend to judge both separated and try not to compare.

I also don't have a favorite media... each case is unique.
Like Azumanga Daioh and Hunter x Hunter... I like both anime and manga.
Hellsing I liked the anime more than manga... mostly because of music and animation I guess.
Dragonball I loved the manga, couldn't watch much of the anime... but it's probably because of the dubbing.
Aqua got my attention more than the first episodes or Aria the Animation too... guess it's nice to take time to appreciate the scenarios.

But I don't go to extremes like saying "I LOVED the manga, but HATED the anime" and such...

I usually prefer anime, I only read manga when people specifically recommend it as being better than the anime adaptation. That, and the manga that don't even get turned into anime.

Wait... people actually liked the anime adaptation despite the last 5 episodes being a total trainwreck? I was under the impression that people preferred seeing Raki go off and train rather than being the whiny plot device that he turned out to be.

As for me, I don't have a preference and will evaluate each on their own merits.

normally Id say I'd prefer the anime version with the exception of a few titles.
Claymore is one of it. The anime was going great...untill ep 18+...totally strayed off the manga.

Sometimes though there are many mangas that you just wished would turn into an anime. For me, I am hoping (really bad I might say) that the manga Bitter Virgin, and 20th Century Boys would make an appearence on the TV....but I can only hope.

Mangas usually convey the emotion attached to the characters more effectivly, because you are reading it, and you mind is picturing it (involvement of the mind) instead of looking and listening (where you are only feeding on the info)

manga have the advantage that you can read them at your own pace. if your japanese is not so good yet, but you still don't want to miss all the goodness of the latest releases, manga provides the better learning experience i think. watching anime without subtitles is much more difficult (unless you're exceptionally bad with kanji).
concerning quality, anime have more aspects that can decide if it's a blockbuster or poo. you not only need good imagery, story and dialogues, but also seiyuu, animation and colors.

taking your example of claymore, it's a partial improvement over the manga, i think: the drawings and character designs are better, but the story wasn't so well brought over. it should have been a 39 eps series (or even more).

I'd say, in general, the original is the best.
I might say this even with light novel-based anime, but they're kinda hard to compare, and light novels are hard to find. (Yay Baka-Tsuki!)

Manga all the way, popular anime like one piece or Naruto, have tons and tons of fillers and most of the time, that is what kills the anime.

I'll take manga. I don't like synching to stuff and giving them 100% of my attention (I only do that with people) so I prefer to read at my own pace.

I like manga better because the story is usually better. However anime is sometimes better for action stories because sometimes its a bit difficult to tell whats going on during fights in manga.
Original animes are great though, like Tengen Toppa and Sola. I guess I just like the original stuff.

One manga to anime story which I can think of which is good is DeathNote.
Eversince then, I've been following Madhouse Productions ever more.
The Anime kinda fixed some loopholes in the plot of the manga even... thats how good it is. Its been a while so i can't really remember now.
I also liked how they "Animate" the manga into moving scenes... the feeling is good.

I prefer manga for the plot and story continuity, Anime for the fighting scenes it is easier to comprehend because fighting scene in manga sometimes are a little messy...

Here are my reasons for each:

    Anime:

    - Colour can distinguish characters from each other, especially really similiar looking ones
    - Battles are never hard to follow when they're animated
    - Voices can give characters a wealth of extra personality
    - Music can make a moment sadder, cooler, funnier or more exciting

    Manga:

    - No fillers, all raw exciting and original material :)
    - A proper ending and conclusion to the story (99 times out of 100)
    - Deeper character and or plot development
    - The Creator's insight!
