Japanese and Looks

There is a thread over at Itai News of how many Japanese men think that they are ugly. There are comments like...

- "When I look in the mirror while getting a haircut, I want to die."
- "My drivers license photo looks like a wanted criminal."
- "I look horrible in the subway mirrors. I cant beleive I have managed to live until this day with a face like this." (Japanese subways have mirrors for some reason)
- "I look most disgusting when I see my reflection in a CD."
- "I frightened myself when I first looked in the mirror with glasses on."
- "My eyes look like the eyes of a dead fish."

When I was a teenager I hated the way I look and got quite depressed about it. Had zits all over and still get them occasionally ^^;
Today, I don't care about my facial appearance as I've learned many moons ago that true friends just care about whats inside (liver, lungs, intestines etc).

This is a pic taken by Joi Ito of Matt Flannery and I last week. Just had a thought - must be odd for folks who are talking to me - where do they look? ^^;
I remember a girl bursting out laughing when she saw my face after I took off my helmet ^^;

How do you feel about your looks?

        But girlfriends always say that regardless of what they really think. In fact they're even more likely to say it when they don't really believe it, as they're trying to convince themselves.

    "My drivers license photo looks like a wanted criminal" <--- I think I can safely say this is the case for just about everyone >_>;. None of people I know, guys and girls, pretty or not, likes their driver ID and think the same. It's such a funny mugshot xD. I would like to be a little better looking than I am now (maybe fix my hairstyle would do the trick xD) but overall, I'm content with the way I look. I am myself and look like myself and no one else.

      Yep ! In France, for ID photographes, it is forbidden to smile (otherwise, your photo is rejected by the administration...) because they say it changes the look of your face. So no smile, no spectacles, no hat or scarf, etc... They want to be sure it is your genuine face.
      Hence everybody looks bored, tired at best, or worst: ugly or criminal (mug shot)

        I understand that problem as well, which is why I choose to sport a pretty thick beard most of the time. I've never been carded for anything with my beard, but when I shave, I look like I'm 15. haha.

        And when I was in school they told us the bone structure of a male would continue until I was 22-23!! LIARS!!!

    I don't mind my looks, but i find it embarassing posting a pic of myself online though, maybe its because people from all over the world would be able to see me. I also get embarassed when i'm the centre of attention, so that might be another reason...

    imo, if you feel ugly, you'd tend to look more ugly. since you wouldn't care to dress up properly etc. but if one were happy with the way they look, that confidence can reflect in the way you look, the way you dress and posture would be better. also putting a smile on each day would improve how people react to you, and in turn help you feel more content in the way you look.

      Agreed, I don't consider myself ugly or super-handsome but I'm above the average I guess. And also dressing definitely helps, of course I don't spend a fortune on clothes but friends occasionally make compliments on what I wear so I'd say every little bit flattery builds up a self confidence.

    I personally think I'm not super attractive. I don't get girls swooning over me, etc.
    Lots of girls *do* say I'm incredibly cute, but I think that's more in the "haha you're a geek and a loser and it's cute" than the "ooo he's cute" way.

    I've had a girlfriend though, so that's kinda boosted my self-esteem a lot. Now I know it can be done ^_^
    Have asked a few girls out lately with my newfound (non-otaku-like) courage and been turned down by nice girls who say I'm cute and kinda flirt with me - don't understand why they flirt with me and then turn me down. Silly girls. They say they just see me as a really good friend, though. I guess I am the kind of boy who girls like being friends with, but that not many would like to go out with.

    So all in all I'm happy that I'm not gross-looking, but I wish I could be "hot" instead of "super cute".

    I don't like my looks. I've tried many different looks but all have turned out terrible. The length I have my hair at and when I'm clean shaven and wear classes I have a more feminine look which I've been asked out by two gay guys because of it. Turned them down of course but they both became really good friends of mine. I've dressed as a trap to school before to confirm this suspicion of mine and I indeed have a real feminine look to me when I'm clean shaven.
    When I try to grow a bit of facial hair I end up looking like some meth dealer and people avoid me when I look like that.

    I'm a below average looking person but I've come to accept it. I stopped caring what people think of me based on my looks long ago.

    I chose average, but I'm quite happy with what I look like right now... I've gotten over pimples... pimples was one thing which lowered my esteem. Other things which I could do is be a bit more stylish... Dressing up and styling my hair would definitely raise my self-esteem. currently thinking of some crazy hair style >.>

    People nowadays judge a lot of people by what's good on the outside (fashion and style), and not what's inside. I don't really care what people see or think of me on the outside. Close friends and relatives will accept me anyway(inside).

    Dark brown eyes and a OK face. Also I wear some crazy glasses that straight men comment about.
    Also a little overweight. That is not why I am like this. It is because is what is inside my heart that's a little scary. Yeah, I know its not that bad, if one looks inside hard enough that you can find all sorts of bad things. So, being a total geek is not that bad, in the sciences, history, and of course Japan.

    Law Of Attraction, the more you think about negativity, the more it will materialize in you.

    Being an average-looking person I am, as everybody else would had been depressed once in a lifetime, but just being depress about it will not change anything.

    Even so, if I take care of my face and hair [just moisturiser and basic eye and lip colour, and shampoo/conditioner], I've been told I look pretty, but no matter what, I'm not very photogenic, lol~

    I think it's important to have someone you trust that gives you an honest or heart-felt answer, I tend to ask my younger brother if I look ok before going out :3 Also, when you're happy with life, you glow and that makes you look good, think positive thoughts and make it a habit (/^o^)/~~**

    everyday we are brainwashed by media like movies, televisions, magazines etc about the concept of beauty. is being skinny, tall, having flawless skin, a curvy body, big eyes, outstanding facial features considered beauty?

    in my opinion. most people i see everyday on the streets, at work, on the train etc are normal looking, very few are considered so-called "ugly". so be confident about yourself. don't forget all those super models/ movie stars u see on posters are most probably digitally enhanced. ^^;

    I've never really been to concerned with my appearance (except in Junior High). I look much older than I am, walk a bit hunched over, and have glasses. Most people assume I am married already and with kids cause I look like the family type. I'm only 23 though. In bootcamp, during battlestations, one of the RDCs stopped me and asked "Whoa!! How old are you? No offense, but you look WAY older than that" Doesn't bother me though.

    In your defence, Danny, while you might not look like Johnny Depp, you're hardly ugly. She was probably laughing because the helmet may have contorted your face when you took it off - depending on how snug a fit it is.

    @ Calan who said "don't understand why they flirt with me and then turn me down. Silly girls."

    No offence (saying that always makes it sound worse, doesn't it?) but are you quite young? That's quite a young teenager way of looking at things. (A) Girls flirt in general, often with boys they don't find attractive at all because it's easy to get their attention and girls love attention. (B) I know a lot of people that take "smiling" or "touching on the arm" as flirting. It really isn't, but some of my friends are so shy that those things seem like a big deal to them. (C) Often girls find it hard to flirt with boys they DO like. I mean, I'm sure a lot of us find that we can talk easily to girls we don't fancy but when the girl we DO fancy is there, we may just become really self-conscious.

Was quite bothersome when I was in Austrailia since everyone was calling me Mel.

    I think I look okay. But it's weird, every time I'm out doing errands with my mom, I always get commented on being handsome by women, and even sometimes men. @_@ It usually ends up going like this:

    Stranger: Is that your son?
    Mom: Yes.
    Stranger: He is very handsome. *looks at me and smiles*
    Mom: Thank you.
    Me: @_@ (if its a guy), ^^ (if it's a pretty woman)

    I guess that is a good thing (kinda when it comes from the guy...), but I don't necessarily think it's true. I don't know what else to say but that I am stunned every time I get that comment/praise. I guess I just can't accept compliments sometimes. =P

    i used to not reallycare about my looks, but then when i got to high school,i learned that people act about as good as they dress themselves. so then i became very aware of what i wore, how i wore it, and how my face looked, because i see it as something important. so if i meet a person whose breath is smelly and they wear dirty shirts, i probably would decline on liking their personality.

    I'm pretty secure with my looks now. It wasn't always this way though... But now that I know that people are attracted by me, I feel better... hehe

    Well, sometimes when I look myself in the mirror I'm like:
    - Oh, man! UGLYNESS!!!
    And then there are moments when I look I say:
    - Heey! Looking sex-AYEH!! Grrrr...
    I think it depens on your mood... and age. Teenagers tend to think too much about their appearance but in the end that's not really what counts! THIS(points at the fridge) is what counts! Kidding! Of course it's the wit!

    I'm Happy with my looks, whats my secret? i realized that all men are ugly just some are less ugly than others :P. but seriously my last drivers license makes me look like a lizard, to top it off i wasn't planning to take a new picture so i wore a shirt with a giant metal skull on it.

    I like my looks. A lot of people say that I'm cute. The only issue is that stupid idiots only bother cute girls. But fools will be fools. It'll be a miracle if I ever meet a decent guy. He doesn't have to be good-looking, But with all of the idiots in my world, I'm just looking for an average hard-working guy. D:<

    this debate about ugliness are rooted in the media's portrayal of what's 'beautiful'. but i don't think I'm ugly (although i was called that in high school) but the bright side about it is, the people who called me 'ugly' are ugly as well lol. ;)

    You can be a perfect 10 in looks but if the attitude stinks all it will do is put a face to it.

    I am an american woman who has no idea why japanese men think they are unattractive.In my opinion, japanese men are the most attractive men on earth and I have always seen them as sex symbols.You guys are gorgeous, you should not be so hard on yourself.
