Leopard on PC

Looks like somebody is installing Mac OS X Leopard on a PC laptop and selling it branded as "MacBook Nano." I'd probably be tempted to get one even though its not official goods.
More pics at Flickr, cngba via tuaw.

Been reading in a few mac mags and on the internets about folks installing Leopard on a PC - specifically mini laptops. Tried once myself and failed though. There is also a device that can be attached to the motherboard called the efix which enables Leopard to be installed on a PC with ease apparently.

Anybody here tried to install Leopard on a PC?

Can apple sue someone for installing their OS on a pc ?

And macbook nano. HAHA! catchy, unlike Asus eeepc.

I am in the budget range of buying a new laptop myself for school.
I have considered a eeepc, small and very portable. I just want a little bit of power on a laptop though, in case I feel like tugging in a round of BF2142 or TF2 in between class. (or in case i go lan. I hate hauling my pc)

Yeah, technically Apple could sue, as it's a breach of the EULA (Can only be installed on Apple certified hardware).

This is why I hate Apple. They try to make rules on what you can do with the hardware and software that you purchased. Why is it I can do whatever I want to my car, microwave, or TV but I can't do anything with MY software?

X33b, I agree with you, we should be able to do whatever we want to what we buy, just as I jail broke my ipod touch because I wanted to. But if I read the post right, these people where not just breaking past Apple security, but selling the laptops, thus making an illegal profit.

Macs are basically PC's with the only exception being that they are rocking an extra EFI chip which tells the OS X installer that you are running a genuine mac.

Since Macs are capable of running Windows which was meant for PC, why is it that surprising for PC's to be able to run OS X Leopard?

I read an article about how OSX provides longer battery life than Vista running on the same computer doing the same stuff (like web browsing, writing in word...). Looks like OSX can control the energy saving features of the hardware way better than Windows. I can't find the link right now, but I think the OSX provided 1-2 extra hours on the same MacBook Pro.

I used Mac Os in broadcasting class for two years. I named the loading pinwheel the: "pinwheel of death" because if it didn't go away after about 10 seconds you knew you were in trouble. I really don't see any advantage to using Mac OS, especially not even for security. Linux is really the best OS because there needs to be more open hardware support for it to take off. Though you can buy 100% compatible Linux computers, I want one really bad!

I really wonder how schools can manage to mess up macs like they appear to do. I can only figure out two ways to cause this, which is to use up the HD so it lacks space for the swap file or install borked 3rd party system components (the latter needs root password).
Apple should really investigate why public macs tend to fail since it gives them a bad reputation. Then again it's my impression that windows tend to work even worse on public computers.

Yeah but everybody knows somebody who uses Windows. However quite a lot of people only know the stability and user inferface on a Macintosh from public computers. This means that if public computers are unstable, then it's say 5% of the windows computers, but 100% of the macs that people notice.

Hey, I'm not computer illiterate! In fact, I know why the computers ran like crap. First of all they were very old G4's that were under heavy use daily, but most importantly they were never connected to the internet for any ANY system updates.

Why is it that Mac users can install Windows but PC users cannot install Leopard? Just curious.

There are a finite number of components that the OS supports. Vista uses plug ins and drivers that are installed third party, and OS X is intended to come preloaded with those things. So if you did install OS X on a PC, it just wouldn't recognize everything it had plugged into it.

        Ooo, I see I see..

So you have to only use hardware that OS X recognizes is that right? Or can you install drivers on OS X to recognize those that are not preloaded on OS X??

Apple will probably not tolerate someone using it's brand name like this. But if there is a demand for buying the OS separately, then maybe Apple should consider doing it.

There has always been a demand, but one of the reasons why OS X is so good and stable is because they have control over both the software and the hardware. As soon as they release it separately they'll have tons of problems with drivers and hardware issues, just like Windows users do.

I'm not bashing on Windows, I use both Windows and Mac, but I think it would be a really bad idea to release it for other PCs.

Always been tempted really to try out a Hackintosh and it has been made that much easier now that Apple have moved their components over to Intel (which is one of the best hardware decisions they could have ever made). Sadly my aging VAIO wouldn't be up to par and oddly enough I do actually like Vista... *hides*

I tried Hackintosh/OSx86 on my Aria PC since it has very similar components to the Mac Mini, video didn't work well and I was disappointed in the audio quality. (I could have spent some time trying to fix it but didn't.)
There's several OSx86 releases and forums where you can get advice and help on how to install.

I did learn that Apple's Leopard is a very good OS. A large part of what makes it so performing and stable is the fact it's developped and geared towards specific hardware. If Apple would make their OS open to all other computer (components), they'd run into the same problem as Windows and Linux distro's, support and drivers for all the different hardware out there would be problematic.

And although I'm not fond of some of the philosophies of Apple regarding their OS and pricing, I'm tempted to get an Apple next time I switch.

This has tempted me to try Hackintosh again, lol.

Yeah i read about this using a MSI Wind the American/Asian Name and the Acer 4211 i think in the uk from PC World. You need to buy a bigger hard drive and insert more ram and then do a full install of the system some of the things won't work at the moment i read from a website. like the wifi will work on the original xp settings etc but once you install the mac os on to it the wifi won't work but they are releasing updates later and drives later for it.

Here is the link for the guide on what works and what you need.

Here is the link of a company called psystar that works in Miami, FL . They run Mac OS X leopard on their computers http://store.psystar.com/ . Prices are cheap compared to Mac, also they are being currently sued by Mac. Here is some information on the suit

    Legal Issues
Rudy Pedraza also said Psystar believes Apple's prohibition against third-party installations might not hold up in court: "What if Honda said that, after you buy their car, you could only drive it on the roads they said you could?"

Rudy said Psystar will continue to sell the OpenPC system, despite the fact that it appears to violate Apple's Mac OS X EULA. "We're not breaking any laws," he insisted.[2]

On July 3rd, 2008, Apple filed a lawsuit against Psystar in the District Court of Northern California[3]. A case management conference is scheduled for October 22nd to plan out future proceedings of the trial.

On August 28th, 2008, Psystar Corporation responded to Apple's claims of copyright infringement, and is also countersuing Apple for anti competitive business practices, monopolistic behaviour, and copyright misuse

People who are bashing Apple seem to forget that they're running a business, just as Microsoft is. Microsoft overloads Vista with a whole bunch of plugins, and Apple gears OS X towards a more niche market. Each comes with its pros and cons, and they're simply taking different routes to earn money. Which may sound like an argument for open-source - maybe it is - but that comes with its own problems.

I myself love using OSX as well as Windows, but I'll admit the price for a Mac is pretty difficult to stomach. I'm using a MacBook Pro right now, and for laptops I'll stick with them, but I doubt I'll ever get a desktop Mac. It's simply much more economical to build your own Hackinstosh, and as a bonus putting the hardware together is soemthing I enjoy.

If you are planning to build a test machine as a hackintosh, you better have lots of time on your hands. The OS updates can screw up your system. My test machine has been running 10.5.2 successfully for nine months. I decided to update to 10.5.4 and everything works. Now going to 10.5.5 is another story. I loss my wired network connections. I have spent almost four days on this and may consider buying a network card to resolve this. In all it's a good learning experience in dealing with 'device drivers' on a Mac.
