A device called the R4 III is being sold online and there are a few Chinese threads talking about the device too.

A seller on Yahoo Auction Japan has up for auction a DSi and R4-III pack at 27,500 yen - they claim that they rewrote the firmware and made it work with the R4-III device. Hmmmm.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

hmmm.....Sounds interesting. This past week I picked up that same R4-III device for my NDS, It has been working well for me. What devices do you guys use? A lot of the people I know use CycloDs but I couldnt afford it atm and wanted to play DS games badly so I got this. And I haven't any complaints as of yet. Too bad I will have to wait a few months to try it out on DSi.

I expected that, but not this soon. XD
I also was thinking that maybe they manage to unlock the DSi using it's own SD card slot.

That would be very lolsome... Nintendo making it even easier to run homebrew on the new DS.

DSi does have the ability to receive firmware updates and Nintendo is going to use them as a "tool" to combat R4s and similar cards, or at least that's the word on the street. Firmware altering cards and updates don't mix well to the point where your internet access can flatline, meaning no firmware updates even if you wanted to, or your unit can stop working altogether. If companies do re-work DSi firmware to accommodate new versions of R4, you're still going to have to pay for those new updated cards.

About R4 firmware updates... no need for Internet acess on the DS. You can load it on the SD memory card and then install it using the DS.

Unless Nintendo has done a complete overhaul on the system, you don't really need to alter the original firmware for the cards to work.

The DS reads it as if it was a game.

Just to clarify, I'm not supporting piracy here. But homebrew stuff is lots of fun, and a great add to the DS. If Nintendo gave some official support to stuff like that, I'm shure great games would come out of that...

Also, just reminding that there's a similar case: The PSP.

And the PSP hack is far more complicated since it does replace the original firmware.

Still, several updates later, Sony still didn't manage to block homebrew firmware.

What I mean by explaining all that is: I really doubt Nintendo will find a way of completely blocking cards like R4 or some way of unblocking the DSi for homebrew stuff.

And to tell the truth, I'm not even shure that's really what they want.

It's a fact, wheter the companies like this or not, that a console or portable will sell tons more if people are able to use pirated games on it.

Really does wonders for publicity, even if it's unfair to game developers.

companies are not targeting the number of consoles they sell
they are more like target how many games they sell after that

thats why you will notice how cheap consoles are or how some consoles are sell below cost price (e.g ps3)
this is all in a hope to sell the games which they could make more profit from

anyway, its really great to hear that R4 is gonna be working
now i need to check with local shops on it..

btw, what color do you guys go for? i think white's abit outdated, gonna try something more striking this time around - red??!!

Yep, it really seemed too fast.
There's a video showing that someone was able to insert custom code on the DSi firmware... but to release a commercial R4 version compatible to DSi this fast.
Would really be impressive. Like someone from inside Nintendo leaked the specs...

This was to be expected. The real question is... do we get DSi-only features with it?
That's why rushing out to buy a R4 is pretty dumb.
Firmware could still be locked too, enabling Nintendo to force annoying updates. So as to say that it's cracked is indeed a bit fast.

What I heard that is not working for all games... actually, I didn't see any difference inside my R4DS and R4DS-III.

And if you get the latest R4DS firmware and stuffs, some things run in DSi. But no real proof until now.

What is R4-III to begin with? What does it alter on a DSi?

On the DS/DS Lite it's like an adaptor that you put an SD card into. All the software is on the SD card. The DS then loads an operating system stored on the SD card rather than the regular DS operating system.

From there you can play music, play movies, read txt files and, of course, play DS ROMs. The operating systems are getting more and more advanced to the point that they now have internet browsers and the ability to cut, copy, paste and delete all the files on the SD card.

Oh, uh, and I should have then finished by saying: And going off that screenshot, this looks to be exactly the same. Since the DSi still plays games from Slot-1, I don't think an awful lot has to be changed.

That sounds amazing. I sort of figured but I had to confirm what R-4 III really does. I'll keep this in mind if i ever plan to get a DS Lite or DSi someday.
