Where I live it's sorta like a stereotypical thing for an Asian girl to do when taking pictures (I guess they weren't wrong =/) I just do it when I'm having fun with friends or something.
I'd say, in general, the original is the best. I might say this even with light novel-based anime, but they're kinda hard to compare, and light novels are hard to find. (Yay Baka-Tsuki!)
