The whole thing happened in a town which has been whaling for a long time, so the families of the kids might be involved with whaling. So the kids basicly went to see what local industry there is in their town. That's why I think it was educational....

I' ve heard swimming is good for the back as it doesn't put much stress on it. Also lying on your stomach and lifting your head (so the opposite of sit ups) can strenghten the back muscles. (they have some kind of machine for it in gyms as well)
