I just finished watching sky crawlers, very good movie. Bittersweet, sad, exciting and really the air of dread is just enough that you really feel for the characters. The climax was wholly unpredictable and poignant.
Mundane tasks are a long held tradition for weeding out the unworthy in martial arts training. It's something massively lacking in the money minded schools here in the USA. Nice to see how they approach it in Japan, Kyudo.
That black marker thing is the standard operating procedure in any and all Muslim countries, they're religiously oppressive and make no apologies for it. My Dad worked in a Muslim country for years and would often bring home a Playboy or two just to...
I love this site for the pics of Japan (not wild about the flickr comments stuff) but anyway, it seems like the number of pics per pictorial has recently started to decline. Me miss all of those pics!
For a little more money you could have had it all with a 5D Mk2. The sensor, the ISO, the megapickles. You do get better AF and Speed on the 7D - but at the cost of real quality. Unless you do pro-sports work, why not go 5D Mk2? It's a vast diffe...
Great little toy. Did someone mention the real 5D Mk2 has no on-board flash? That's a dead tip off you're a rank amateur - thank god it has no on board flash. Everyone knows on-board flash serves but one purpose and that is to make your subject lo...
I've walked into to the wrong rest room of the wrong or opposite "sex." usually drunk. If I walked into the wrong "gender" restroom I would be in a room constructed of language application and use since gender only applies to the male or female or n...
Great pics as always. The NOTES are tragic, the stupidest idea ever on Flickr. Photo's capture a moment, peoples opinions and notes should appear below and not ruin the continuity of the image. Flickr's biggest mistake was the whole idea of the NO...
I tell people how this used to happen to me all the time in Japan, and how I'd wake up with my head resting on top of theirs sometimes too after I dozed off (I'm very tall). So here is real proof on DC.com!
On the second video of original vs Special Ed, the rebel x wings taking off at 58 sec into the video. That was an amazing scene in 1977 and Lucas utterly destroyed it in the fix up. Those garish x-wings pulling up in the special edition look stupid...
I stumbled onto this test while studying Japanese as a hobby. I got a tutor and really started to set a goal of getting it done. I gave myself a year to get ready and really tore into it. I fell ill and lost the goal. This makes me want to try aga...
I'd take being bullied over living in a culturally repressive Nation any day. You live in a repressive semi-theocratic society - we can agree on that right? I mean you don't burn people at the stake lately or anything, but "caning" is far too cruel...
Bullying is a shame and should be discouraged, but adults are also over protective and over compensating for what they suffered as kids - which made them who they are ultimately. Kids interact and have a pecking order. A mistreated kid is still sma...
Why not say it, it's true. Darwin applies to nature and man alike. I'm a perfect example that this statement is true. I was a skinny weakling who had to man up or get left behind. I lived in a neighborhood where you had to fight to earn the right...
Great stuff, but Shirow would have never had a character hold two guns like some silly hollywood poser, perhaps that has changed, but he's all about as much realism in his fantasy as possible.
You really are living the life Danny, awesome stuff. This and the Tokyo photo walks looks like bliss and fun. Oh btw Danny have you ever considered taking up a mild exercise program? Some weight training, calisthenics, etc. Great pics.
I've always been intrigued by the peace sign thing and other hand gestures that Japanese people, especially the ladies, do when photographed. I photograph folks in America all the time, no one ever throws up a peace sign.
Danny - does that photog make enough shooting figure images to pay for all of that Pro lighting equipment? He's got a good set up and that is not cheap.
Very nice, very positive blog and images Danny. Your outlook is pretty much Joseph Campbells advice to "Follow Your Bliss..." You've found your "place of bliss" so all that remains is to keep following it. With very little additional artistic inten...
