As for your question of REAL health maintenance, I seriously think exercise is a very important part of life. Running is quite a chore but surprisingly, after torturing yourself for a good 30mins, you'll find that you actually feel VERY GOOD. Of course, if the sun in Japan is as scorching as the sun in Singapore, you may wanna take your healthy jogs in the evening or early morning.
