Having now been at a Japanese school for 3 months, I haven't seen any bullying directly, but I can definately understand why it's so common in Japan and why there is little that can be done about it. I'm sure most of you know about the Sempai > Kohai system? Sempai is basically who ranks higher than you, ie. higher grade, while a kohai ranks lower. Basically, you have to behave respectfully to your sempai and can enjoy the humbleness and somewhat politer language of the kohai. Its not super strict of course, but still surpr... Things like the examples there are just so naïve they don't event make me angry. I just sort of sigh as I am reminded of how the world really is mostly full of ignorant, prejudiced hypocrits. Hey I'm a non-otaku guy and I'm here. Thats not because I think otaku are slimy socially incompetent nerds, but lately it seems the requirements are quite steep. Frankly I would consider myself more of a Japanophile, who, among other things, enjoys anime and manga, yet not to an obsessive level. I have almost played eroge before, but that kind of thing often makes me feel a bit pathetic. I don't really get why, since I don't think people who play eroge are pathetic. I recommend Bernard Cornwell. He is by far my favourite author. Basically he has a huge load of historical novels, usually based around some tough guy fighting battles and winning maidens, yet exceedingly well written and not boring for an instant. Whereas in many books you have to read a while to get glued, here I'm stuck from the first page onwards. Lately I've been reading a Sherlock Holmes book I got from the Harajuku library, but that's just because I love all the quaint Englishness. ( View formatted comment » )
