If I were a new user, I think the top page mock-up you have above would be a great start. It's clean and simple, avoiding unnecessary confusion and possible frustration. I can see at a glance what your site is about, and that there's more underneath (e.g. "Secret Menu"). Thumbs up from me, there. As for what I'd like to see in a page, I'm comfortable with what I see now when I stop by. I used to write short stories and the beginnings of novels. The problem was I'd think up a new idea for a new story while I was in the middle of writing, and then I'd want to write that story, instead. I have journals filled with half-written works. ^_^; The little scenarios under the pics allow me to do minor story-craft without any real dedication and attention on my part...^^ ( View formatted comment » )

Loved the talk on obstacles, and you have the right attitude towards them. A lot of military leadership likes to call obstacles, "opportunities to excel." While it's somewhat cliched, it is true. Only through adversity do you get a chance to truly shine. And remember, whether you face an obstacle and succeed or fail, always take away something.
