Dunno where you lived, but when I was in Rio for 2 years Japanese food were doing not too shabby. My friend's uncle has a japanese restaurant by Praia de Ipanema, they got pretty good business serving sushi and sashimi. but i guess there are a lot tourists going there. compare to the brazilian cuisine, oriental cuisine is completely different. (I miss bacalhao, coxinha, feijao, churrasco....) people are less comfortable to adapt the food. I know sao paulo is bit better since the large japanese/chinese population.
