Cool. I watched Haruhi volume 1 last night. Now I see why Danny loves her so much. ( View formatted comment » )

Cool! I watched the first volume of Haruhi last night. It was great, but she sure is mean to the other girl. ( View formatted comment » )

No enlightenment, just some old beaten copper, a wooden staircase and 800 year old stale air. The Big Buddha in Hong Kong had a restaurant and a gift shop in it. No such luck here I'm afraid. ( View formatted comment » )

I estimate you could fit 20 idols inside the Buddha, less if their eyes were particularly large. I'm not sure if you'd be allowed to touch them though. ( View formatted comment » )

Good thoughtful article Danny. I've had a huge numbers of ups and downs in my 11 year otaku career. I've been made redundant twice and the dot com crash was painful. The thing is to build on these set backs - I started my own business after the dot com crash and 5 successful years later it gave me the cash to go on holiday to Japan. ( View formatted comment » )

Potato *and* spagetti? Only in Japan... I ate at Johnathans a couple of times, it was pretty good value (and easy to order in English). I liked the seasonal menus, pumpkin was popular in October. Danny: Does the Japanese Tescos have the famous "Tesco Value" product line for credit crunched consumers? I'm more of a "Tesco Finest" man myself, but please investigate for us!!! I think my favourite anime Elfen Lied is set in Kamakura. Also, how come so many anime series have an episode where they all go to the beach (Chobits and Angelic Layer are two I can think of). ( View formatted comment » )

Kamakura was great, it was a good day out from Tokyo. I also paid 20 yen to go inside the massive Buddha. It was nice to see the inside. But not so nice was man in wooden hut letting a coach load of tourists inside after me, so I could not get out of Buddha again! I was going to have a paddle in the Pacific Ocean, but I changed my mind when I tripped over something on the beach and found it was a fish with massive spines (a bit like our hedgehogs). I also wanted to take a shell home as a souvenir, but when I picked it up I found there was... ( View formatted comment » )

Does that crab on the side of the wall move? There is one in Shinjuku that does, it's really cool. I guess they must be a chain of crabmeat restaurants or something. ( View formatted comment » )

That looks like the Chuo line to me - a good way to get from Shinjuku to Akihabara! Dr Who is back on the TV here in the UK, but it's not as good as the Tom Baker years IMHO. Daleks can now fly though :-) ( View formatted comment » )

Did a PhD, it's definately worthwhile although I ended up going down a completely different career path :-) Would love to work in Japan, as I guess my otaku programming skillz would be in demand but I'm not great at learning non-Otaku languages. It's taken me a year to learn just the Kanjii numbers. Oh well, at least I can dream of going on holiday to Japan again some time. I went last year, but my brain is still in denial that I actually went... ( View formatted comment » )

Cool pictures, but I still prefer IE. I like the Dell ladies in Akihabara, but I used to do not like my Dell laptop which kept spontaneously crashing due to some wierd memory leak thing. ( View formatted comment » )

Most of London and SouthEast England is noisy because of planes going to/from Heathrow. There is some talk of moving it to a man made island in the Thames estuary. I'm not sure it will ever happen though. ( View formatted comment » )

I went to Kamakura, which I think is quite near to Enosmima. It was the first time I've seen the Pacific Ocean which was pretty cool. There were some weird fish washed up on the shore and I was going to take a shell home as a souvenir but found it had a crab living in it! ( View formatted comment » )

I live near London, it's a cool city. I make regular visits to the Japan Centre in Picadilly for stocking up on miso, Pocky and wasabi peas. Do you miss Heinz Baked Beans? I don't remember seeing them in Japan, which would be a big problem for me if I lived there. ( View formatted comment » )

"paraphernalia" is a posh word for "stuff" or "things". I don't know if it includes figures, gundams etc. ( View formatted comment » )
