Baseball in Japan

I'm back out on the running track after a couple of weeks of rest to get over the cold that is compulsory for every Tokyoite to catch at this time of year. The Tokyo marathon is now only about 10 weeks away - got a lot of miles to cover between now and then.

Komozawa Olympic Park is buzzing this morning, with a national handball championship and swimming competition going on, in addition to the regular baseball, football and tennis matches.

In the photo you can see a few boys practicing one of the most important tecniques - the Extruded Bum Squat, used to increase airflow out of the mouth when cheering team members on.

Of course, being British, I have little interest in baseball (sweeping statement?!). I think the first time I saw an actual baseball bat was when I was bludgened into going to see the New York Yankees vs. the Detroit Tigers (in NYC), who apparently were quite famous.

My memories of that day are a little hazy - I remember the popcorn tasted good, and people kept on raking the sand.

To be honest though, the game had little chance of winning my full attention, as only a couple of days earlier I'd got together with my first *proper* girlfriend - this was our first trip together since *that* incident in the log cabin. I was too busy thinking about the snogging that was to be done on the bus home to the summer camp in the Catskill mountains where we worked.

I'm still in touch with her via Facebook. She's married now and has a very cute baby (it's not mine).

Are baseball games known as good places to take a date? Where did / would you go on a first date?
