Despite the abundance of beautifully designed credit cards in Japan, foreigners usually have an especially tough time when applying for credit. I've read lots of horror stories about it on the internets. Since I don't really read of foreigners successfully getting credit in Japan, I must assume that quite a number do but no one blogs about it. ^^.
I applied for a student credit card when I first arrived and didn't face any difficulties. The credit card I applied for was affiliated to Keio University. I guess, as a student, applying for a credit card affiliated with your university gives you some bonus points. Guarantors are also important. Although I don't remember filling in any why I applied, for Japanese students, this usually involves ze parents.
Having a stable income is definitely a plus. I had one in the form of a scholarship. I'm sure that helped a great deal. My credit limit was, however, pretty low. Not even to even get half a Mac Pro. But it was still 6 digits. ^^. What happens when one needs to buy a Mac Pro?
Easy. Call up the credit office and ask them very nicely to increase your limit for this purchase. If not, you can always carry cash to the Apple Store. ^^.
I find credit cards extremely convenient. Have to becareful not to abuse it though. How about you? How many cards do you carry?
