Whilst at my local convenience store getting lunch, I spotted this - a
video rental machine. It's entirely automated - just find the video
you want, swipe your credit card and it spits it out.
Now I know these aren't new - I think they first appeared in Italy
about 5 years ago, and I've seen them in Tokyo Metro stations too, but
this is the first time that I've seen one that dispenses videos for
FREE! Yep, you don't have to pay.
So what's the catch? You have to return them within 24 hours ...and
your choice is limited to US TV dramas like Lost, The 4400, Bones and
Prison Break.
But still, a great way to catch up on these series if you don't want
to paying 100~200 yen a time as you would in the video rental shops.
I'm thinking that maybe the convenience store subsidises these as
well, as it means that customers have to come back every 24 hours! -
cunning!
Of course it has a load of other videos too, and these cost anything
from 200 yen to 390 yen to rent.
(The machine to the right of the video booth is the control panel for
the photocopier / photo printer)
