Ebisu (sometimes seen with a "Y", Yebisu) is one of the Japanese Gods of prosperity and fortune. Probably one of the more popular ones as there are many brands using his name. Yebisu beer, Evisu jeans etc.

This statue of him stands outside Ebisu station along the JR Yamanote line. He's no hachiko, but still a great spot for meeting up with friends when in Ebisu.

I remember reading of a town outside Tokyo that has hundreds of publicly placed Ebisu statues. Can't remember where it is though. Do you happen to know?

Judging by the positioning of that banner, I say this is intentional.
