If you're setting up home in japan and are on a tight budget, the first place to go is the 100 Yen Shop. They're all over the place, and have the most incredible range of products, all for 100 yen (US$1.10).
I remember when I started my year as an exchange student at Rikkyo University, going to our local 100 Yen Shop and buying almost everything needed for the kitchen, bathroom and living room for just a few thousand yen.
To give you an idea of the range they have, our little local has slippers, socks, house plants, buckets and spades for the beach, badminton rackets, chocolate, tongue cleaners, packs of 300 nails (and hammers), knitting needles, hats, stationary, coffee makers, soy sauce, false eyelashes and toilet brushes. Oh, and of course T-shirts for dogs.
Basically, EVERYTHING that has ever been invented.
I know we used to have poundshops in the UK - do these 'one price for all' shops exist elsewhere? What do they sell?
