Natto in Japan

Trying to eat healthier at home and apparently natto (fermented soy beans) are good for you.

However, they smell weird, have a sticky consistency and taste strange. They're definitely an acquired taste. I'm getting used to them but my first try was a memorable experience.

What foods do you eat for your health rather than for the taste? Have you tried natto?

Tried it once, not bad in my opinion, but i still can't believe people eat it with rice, or even make a makizushi with natto :D.

best thing in the world lol

seriously u can down mounds of rice with just 1 serving, and the one you got there is like especially gourmet with the green stuffs.

i had some stomach problems in my year in japan for exchange, not eating well, drinking too much and not enough fruits in diet. tried yakult, fixed it but it was quite expensive.

then i tried natto, fixed it too and cheap and awesome with many things u can combine it with. just never eat it without the seasonings :P

It will be a very brave day, the day I try Natto. I have eaten plenty of other soy products. Soy Milk, Tofu, Roasted Soybeans, etc, but the texture and the smell of natto.. it is a powerful adversary to the western pallet I think.

I liked natto from the first time I tried it. I try to have it once every week (with the enclosed tsuyu, not the mustard) and I usually have it with a small bowl of (japanese) rice. Even though I am not japanese (I am dutch) I have no problem with it whatsoever. The only thing is that it is not too easy tro come by in the Netherlands; I have to go to Amsterdam for it (an hour drive)...

Natto is my favorite snack by far. I like to mix it with raw beaten egg and rice with a little soy and negi.

I had it twice and I liked it. I understand that it looks pretty strange and it is sticky but I don't understand when people say it tastes horrible.

My in-laws had a good laugh at my expense when my mother-in-law served for breakfast at their home in Sendai. It was a classic gaigokujin moment. I plan to try it again to see if I can acquire a taste for it. Let's not forget about THIS! http://www.dannychoo.com/post/en/2366/Natto+Bath.html

There aren't many foods I say no to BUT natto will never ever go down the hatch. The teachers at school got me with natto candy but a bowl of natto....NO! No thank you and pass. Looks like a rice krispy treat gone bad. Please to be giving me the tofu and/or yakiniku. Domo!

For my health I just eat lots of greens (vegetables) and they all tastes pretty decent.

I love natto. My favorite natto dish ever was in a Japanese restaurant here. It was basically an appetizer of raw sushi tuna, natto and green onions. Yum! If you like stinky cheeses, you will likely like the taste of natto. It's the consistency that will turn off many. Yes, the sticky part is a bit like thick snot.

I do NOT like natto. Fermenting soybeans until they are gooshy is a waste of good soybeans. No I don't like tofu either. Edamame? Now you're talking.

I'm using natto to force me getting up early: if I manage to wake up before 9, I treat myself with bread+jam. If I fail, it's natto for breakfast. The problem with this smart set-up is that I'm becoming addicted to natto... Should I do the opposite, now?

I tried to go buy some natto once, since I'm not a picky person, but after smelling the CLOSED container, that smell of dirty socks used for football practice without watshing for several days straight I lost my will. Maybe I'll try it someday, but not right now lol.

Have to say the stuff looks pretty horrifying though o.O
