Making train reservations in Japan is easy. Many stations have a "midori no madoguchi" ticket counter where you can have a person serve you or you use the automated machines. I am going to Australia at end of next week so am booking the Narita Express. I normally leave it to the last minute before I book but my travel date is Oct 1 which is the start of rhe new NEX trains. Thought I better book early just in case. You can expect some live blogging from inside the Narita Express next week.
