Kingyo Sukui

Out at one of our local matsuri which is taking place at a huge
shrine. Here we see some kids trying their dab hand at Kingyo Sukui.
Players are given a hoop with some paper glued to it. When the paper
is dipped in the water to try to scoop the gold fish, the paper starts
to fall apart - they need to catch as many as they can before that
happens. Folks take home any fish that they catch in a plastic bag.
Wanted to try but not sure how long the fish live for. Any of you keep
fish at home? What do you do when they die? Fish n chips?

Kingyo Sukui in action below.

Ive gotten fish at a fair before. They only lived about 3 weeks then they started going belly up. When they die its down the toilet they go.

To be honest i dont know. I think the goldfish you get from fairs and stuff like that normally dont live very long. My friends got them before aswell and they havnt lived longer then a month. But you see goldfish from pet stores in restaurants and they live a long time. The goldfish in japan might live longer but theres only one way to find out.

Sorry for the long post lol

It would seem so. Every time my niece gets some from the fair, (seriously around 7-9 fish) they would all belly up within 2 weeks. I dont think the goldfish here are meant to last very long. We even put them in a fish bowl and fed them fish food.

should not be the case. goldfishes can last for longer time with proper care, including cleaning environment once in a while, and NOT feeding too much food. I've seen big-fat-round goldfishes before.

I've gone with my dad a long time ago. Average life span the guy at the fair told us was 3 weeks. But with good care,(changing water, proper feeding, lots of love, our fish) lived to about a year until Christmas.

I had a few fish when I was younger, but when they passed I decided not to have anymore. I prefer something to cuddle XD
I've heard that prize-fish never really last long. Sometimes a few weeks, sometimes a few days, sometimes just a few hours. I guess it depends on the condition they were kept in before you win them.
Unfortunately, it seems that they don't get much care by the carnies/etc at a lot of places like here or in the US. Maybe Japan's different though, you should give it a shot, Danny. ^^ See how long you can make them last, make a poll, have a contest to see who gets closest XD

But y'know, if festival fish die so quickly, wouldn't the festival vendors quickly go out of business? If all their fish keep dying even when no-one wins them...

Then again, festivals don't last very long, maybe a couple days to a week, so maybe it's irrelevant.

When our tropical fish die...they go join the big fishbowl. We have a convenient express portal in our washroom.

I don't know about from festival stalls like this but, from a pet store I have had small fish like this in a bag of water for up to 1.25 hours before putting into a tank. And they did just fine once the temperature between the bag and fish tank equalize and popped them in. But don't drop the water from the bag into the tank.
When they die it depends. If they were social then a proper burial, if not social..."depending on species" it do be Davey Jones locker for the fishy.

We have an African cichlid that is tan and has chromatophores that make wide black vertical stripes on it's sides when it is mad at the other fishes for taking it's food. It's going on 5 now :D

Whoa thats cool !It definitely seems more fun to do it that way. Here, kids toss ping pong balls into cups with fish (which is too easy imo) and take home however many fish they got. My niece once took home 9 gold fish 0_0. But as for the lifespan of the fish, I didnt see any that lasted more than 2 weeks.

Seriously though it sounds like they have been exposed to something they shouldn't have been exposed to. I heard on the radio once that the police were looking for some guy. He had sold puppies (young dogs) and they lasted around that number of weeks as well. The police suspected that he had violated animal caring laws prior to sale and cheated by selling an expensive, yet faulty merchandise (this is the legal term for that happened).
