Evening stroll in our neck of the woods in Meguro. Lots of matsuri
(festival) going on at this time of year. Atmosphere is most peaceful
and harmonious. Night time is generally safe in Japan - unlike my
hometown Hackney in London where I had to look behind my shoulder
every few seconds at night.
Safe to be out n about in your neck of the woods at night?

    Where I am now, yes it feels quite safe. I walked back to my room at about half past 9 and there was hardly anyone around.

    Canberra (Australia) is pretty safe, you hear of things like muggings every now and then in the CBD, but the suburbs are usually quiet.

    I wouldn't call it safe around here. Someone was shot right in front of our house before we moved here (T_T), but that was years ago. Haven't witnessed anything like that myself.

    The specific streets around me? They're probably okay (other than near the shops in the next road which have hoodies-a-plenty everynight...)
    In town/the city (Oxford)... Not a good idea. Hoodies, chavs, drunken/high people everywhere, you have to keep your eyes alert constantly.

    I live in a pretty quiet neighbourhood so it's pretty safe to walk around my area at night, I've walked home from the station at 1-2am.

    Pittsburgh isn't too bad, but if I didn't have to do something at night downtown, I would wait till daytime. I did feel safe walking around Tokyo at night, though.

    They say sg is generally safe at night but sometimes I feel that it's a false sense of security :P I had came home at 3 am before but seeing people liotering near my home make me walk a detour to reach home ^^;; but then again residential areas in sg is brightly lit compared to some areas in Canada where I live in ^^;;

    Pretty save here, as long as you're not a girl under 14, because then you might get kidnapped and held in a basement as a sex slave by some 50-year old freak (or your father).

    Its generally safe around here. There are however some bad places (like everywhere else) where you shouldnt walk alone due to muggers and gang activity. Car theft is also rampant in some parts over here.

    Whilst walking through Kyoto alleys back to our ryokan one night, my son asked me whether I'd do the same in Perth. "No way..".
    Japan seems safer (granted I haven't bad experience during my short stay). I didn't have to be on alert constantly especially on a crowded train.

    What struck me the first time I was in Tokyo was how safe I felt at night. I thought it was ignorance of danger and (as I am from London) walked around as if at any moment I would be jumped on by a pack of Ninja-muggers! That soon all went away, and by the third day I was relaxed and enjoying Tokyo night life. Im back there soon (October this time) and I would really like to visit a few festivals. Anything going on in the Chidori-Cho area of Tokyo from the 15th october onward?

    Yup. I just walk around unheeded. A concerned neighbour once told me I shouldn't walk alone late at night with my mp3 player out - the glowing screen attracting attention and all - but I had only one earbud on, my music was quiet, and I could hear anyone coming.

    More importantly, I don't remember the last time a crime happened anywhere near my neighbourhood.

      Canada is pretty safe eh? Not everywhere, but most of the time it is. My town is completely safe. Only thing not so safe would be annoying teens on their skateboards bugging you, then you want to beat them up- not to safe for them ^^;
