When I first came to Japan and saw the term "Viking Lunch," all I could think of is some warrior with a metal hat that had horns. In Japanese, "Viking" means "Eat all you want buffet."
Today we try out an Indian viking place we haven't been to yet at Togoshi Ginza. Eat as much as you want naan and drink as much Lassi as you want. Tasted gorgeous at only 980 yen.
Buffet type lucnhes/dinners popular in your neck of the woods?

buffet type lunches cost an arm here. most probably people here eat more food in buffets.
to give an idea, normal lunch would be 100-200yen max per person, buffets cost 800yen starting per person :S

I think your idea of a Viking Lunch would of been more interesting, you should open a Viking-Viking buffet.

"Eat all you want" buffets and restaurant are pretty common here called "tenedor libre" (unrestricted fork), but since most of them served mainly parrilladas (asado) they were called "parrillas" (grills). For $20 (450円) you can eat all the meat you want. Some years ago it was even cheapear, like 200円 for good quality meat, all kind of salads and even dessert.
The meat is a really cheap option here, so going to parrillas is an excelent option for big reunions or taking all your relatives to eat.
Buffet in some places over here means as many different things you can stuff on a plate, but no second helpings. All the other places are as much as you want though. Except it only seems to be limited to chain restaurants and bad Chinese food, not any really good stuff.
I was really disappointed when you explained that Viking didn't mean the actual food, just the type of service. I kind of want to see what Viking food would be like.

The Vikings traveled a lot and therefore ate a lot of different food. The loved to eat a lot of meat and porridge. They made stews and baked bread. Also fruits, nuts and vegetables were common. So there you go, now you can cook a real Viking meal :D

Aren't all buffet eat all you want?
Anyway, this looks similar to the Indian buffet near my place. Buffet type restaurants are somewhat popular, Japanese buffet and salad bars especially.

I was expecting scandinavian type of food, with longboats for the plates. lol to think that viking is tabehoudai...

Several places that cater to the BPO and call center crowds do all-day buffets. They're really strict on the no-leftover policy, though.

>"Viking" means "Eat all you want buffet."
Hahaha! That's a pretty cool and perhaps a bit twisted view of the viking eating habits:)
Buffets here don't make money - I think the failure rate on this line of business is higher than other restaurant types. Haven't been to one for the past few months, partly because it's expensive - it's possible to get two meals for about the same entry price as a lunch buffet, for instance.

Bantha Fodder
Not many here, its almost as rare as snow here, the last buffet I had was pizza hut which went bankrupt and if you do happen to find an 'all you can eat buffet' they're heaps expensive.

wow 980 yen for all you can eat is cheap! lol but eating that much curry would make me feel sick =/
I ate some curry at the curry restaurant (Curry Kitchen Spice) right next to Akihabara station for 750Yen, it tasted really good but I felt crap afterwards haha.
Plenty of buffets around here, and they're quite affordable. I love those ones which stock up a lot of seafood .. mmmm my favourite ^^

I assume the "Viking" part comes from the Scandinavian "smorgasbord" idea, where you have a spread of many different dishes to choose from.

Not a Kurri fan at all >_< Too much curry powder taste and not enough of the other ingredients. As for the question, yes buffet style restuarants are big around here. not a huge fan of them myself seeing how the food usually just sits there all day:/

Wow, nice price for all you can eat indian...
Here in Brazil we have lots of all you can eat restaurants, but usually, when it's foreign food, things can get very expensive.
On the other side, for brazilian food, you get all ranges of prices (including dirty cheap... xD)
I wonder why it's called Viking though... I also imagined something like a tavern that served a large chunk of meat or something.

Since Im from Sweden, where the Vikings once lived, I can tell you that the horns on the "metal hat" is only a myth :) The Vikings were sea warriors (or pirates) during the years 800-1000 A.C. It is true that they are famous for eating much, but not Indian food :)

some places have but the size is too small. Instead of dishes they have thimbles.
I cannot blame, I feel shame when I eat outside and see other eating lots.
Eating is of course one of life's pleasures but everything in excess is a killer.
"In Japanese, "Viking" means "Eat all you want buffet.""
haha
Buffets aren't very good around here. They've gone down in quality the past few years. Food is extremely cheap and usually food that quickly fills you up like fried things.

Well if you're in Alpharetta, GA. go to Minerva. It's about the same price. Tons of different things to try as they try to give a total Indian cuisine experience from different places. That's where I tried that super powerful ice cream. It was two years ago the last time I went....need to go again soon, probably this week.^^

In the US, buffets are so abundant. People are always throwing away food, and food is also relatively cheap. You pay 10 dollars and you can eat just about as much as you want. I tend not to eat there, but when I do, I definitely stuff myself full. :D

Buffets tend to be Chinese food here in the states but I've been to a few Japanese buffets. YUM! It must contribute to the overweight problem over here tho. I always leave regretting walking in, except when there's fresh made sushi. =P

That's actually my single favorite example to explain to Japanese people why gairago isn't easy for us native english speakers.
Apparently they got it from "smorgasbord" - as that's a scandinavian word, and the most famous groups of scandianavian people were what most people now call vikings.
