Been asked by many friends lately to help them buy a new computer. 100 yen netbooks are very popular these days since they are small, light, and of course are very cheap.
To get the deal you must sign a contract for a two year contract for a USB data modem. It's about 6,000 yen a month for unlimited 3g data. Not a bad deal really.
Now you see fast food shops and cafes in Tokyo full of people working on these cheap laptops.
What kind of computer are you using?

That's a good deal, wish there was something like that in Australia. It'd be a handy thing to have at uni.
I'm currently using last generations Macbook Pro, though I want to upgrade to the Unibody one. I really should have waited for it to come out before I purchased my current MBP.

It would be a pretty good deal for somebody only wanting heavy internet usage.
I have a 15.4 inch Unibody Macbook Pro which I bought last month after needing a laptop to take abroad. I have an old iMac in the UK as my desktop computer.

Hmmmm...sounds too good to be true....but then again they always have a catch to these kind of deals and for 6000 yen a month, it's like some installment plan which ends up paying more in the long run...
I'm still using my Toshiba Satellite M100 since 2006... i hope it will last till 2011...XD

Technically, it's like putting on an installment for a laptop. o.o When you compute how much the overall cost would be... it's quite expensive for entry-level laptops... then again, I guess this is for people who couldn't pay much cash at the moment for a laptop ^^;

Bro if count in Rm..damn expensive

Use both Lenovo T61 and ASUS K40IJ. No contract. Used to love these cheap laptops but now I realise you can't do much things with a Atom processor.
still trying to figure it out...

I live in Amsterdam and over here you don't really get a big range of chocies for nettops with data subscriptions, to get the best prices it's better to get that seperate over here, I mean I have an unlimited KPN subscription for 3500 yen a month ringing in at about 6 mbit ( now they changed the terms tough ha ! but i still got the great contract :P )
I wonder if it's the same in Japan where if you buy your nettop seperate, second hand if needed as Japan has a great second hand market - that you would be able to get your monthly costs cheaper for the data subscription.
I mean that nettop may look cheap with 100Yen, but it's calculated in that price you pay 6000 a month for over 2 years for sure and with profit ontop.
As for me ? I am in the same boat as I.Kaito, the Atom just doesn't cut it.
Since last year September I've been using a Sony Vaio TZ21XN. I used to have a Asus EEE-PC 900 when that first came out last year but after a month sold it cause it felt too restrictive. I do alot of traveling to different countries which means sitting in the train a few hours. The EEE PC's battery didn't last long and didn't have the power to even decode 720P without a hassle, plus the keyboard was horrible. Thus I opted for the Sony Vaio TZ series. 11 inch, incredible screen, the power (core 2 duo processor) to run heavy applications like Adobe lightroom (for studio shoots where the laptop is tethered to DSLR) or Maya, decode 1080P movies with a Blu-ray/DVD writer. And best of all ? Weighing 1.2 kilo total whilst being able to run for a little over 7 hours.
It's the best travel companion I have ever had, small and light enough to carry on a daily basis, and has to power to be a workstation as it handles everything I've thrown at it admirably.

This is a good option for people traveling to Japan (on more than a 90 day visa). If you get the basic cheap mobile phone service with no internet and a USB stick with internet, it's a pretty good deal :D I was offered that when I went to my local Softbank store, but I opted for an iPhone 3G instead ^^''

What a great deal with unlimited 3G!! Wow!! I prefer too!! 6000yen covert to Baht in Thai bout' 2300Baht per month. In Thai, this price might very high for Thai people but if compare it with income of Japanese. This promotion is interested.

I've an Acer Aspire One with XP Home. It's a refurb from TigerDirect so it was cheap, only $250USD. I still need to add an external antenna jack and stash the wireless mouse dongle in the sadly never to be used 3G hatch on the bottom. I use the Starbucks reward card wifi thing. Just use your stored value card once a month and you get 2 hours of free wifi a day. Need to be at a Starbucks though... So it's about $2USD a month. Sweet. Great for lunch time surfing.
I'd love to get a cell phone that has a tethering option to it. Even if it's slow speed it's a connection.

I'm using an Acer Aspire One too, although with the 16gb SSD - would have gone for the HDD version if I'd known how slow the SSD was going to be ^^; but since my iPhone does pretty much anything I would have done on the laptop bar videos and Stepmania, I might just save up for a new laptop.

That's totally unfair. In the U.S. if we subscribe to a phone plan, an iPhone cost like 100 USD while you guys get a laptop for a hundred with a modem plan.

In italy there many offers like these but it' s not unlimited internet. They give you a netbook for free with 24 months contract and internet restriction,like...30/50 hours for month or limited data, like max 10 giga download/upload.
I have a Samsung NC10 netbook and a HP DV6000 notebook, recently i bought an iphone and spend 8 euro for month for having 500 mega of data, good for my necessary.I need to find how use teethering and use iphone as modem for my netbook^_^

2 year contract? That's not so good.. but i do own a macbook..

Don't have a laptop or netbook at this time, have looked into some but not sure I'd want a decent MacBook or might go for a netbook. Currently I don't really need one though.
