Unless you're earning well in excess of ¥350k per month, getting a driver's license in Japan is going to cost you a few month's pay. I don't think you can get away with selling your arms and legs in this sitution. Who's going to drive? ^^. Attending driving school is not mandatory, but most do anyway. And most do so when they are still a student with time to kill. Graduations are usually held in April, therefore January-March is a busy time for the instructors.
