I don't know much about cats as I am more of a dog person. Spotted this fine gent walking his cat in trendy Jiyuugaoka (自由が丘). Do cats enjoy walks?

I have no idea if the cat likes it or not. However I assume that the guy does it either because he enjoys it or to protect the cat. There are many dangers for cats outside. There are people and cars, but other animals can be dangerous too. Cats and dogs might fight it and (which came as a surprise for me) we used to have problems here with foxes eating cats. That problem died along with the foxes though. Basically the foxes here died out a few years ago because they got some kind of disease, which had a 100% fatality (which is scary on it's own!).

Cat: Do I look like a freaking dog?
    Man: No.
Cat: This is lame, I wanna go home.
Man: Just a lil longer. I need you to help me pick up some school girls.
    Cat: Why?
    Man: Umm...No Real reason.
Cat: You perv, I'm going home.

Lesson of this story is to not trust old men who are walking their cat. Who walks their cat anyways? lol

My cat would never stand for something like that. There is no guiding where a cat goes, as they always set their own course!

    Fact: Cats > Masters

So i guess the answer to your question will be: Cats enjoy walking by themselves.

Walking a cat with a leash is perfectly normal, especially if it's a pedigree cat or you're not living in the country. ^^

That cat does not look too happy. He looks like he is plotting his owner's demise.

I knew a woman who kept pedigree cats and never let them out of the house except on a lead. Poor kitty's :(

Although I can totally see where she's coming from when they cost as much as they do.

Really it depends on the cat and the person. Some breeds of cat need regular exercise and sometimes due to small living spaces may not be able to get all they need indoors. Also if you think about it's not much wierder than a small dog. I mean I see these people walking dogs so small while at Uni that i swear if i dont look down I'd crush them. At least cats are big enough to be seen.

My mum actually used to take one of our old cats on walks all the time! She and my dad would go for walks to the park and such, and the cat would simply tag along, no leash necessary. No suddenly running off or chasing after things, either. So it's definetly possible!

Generally, I'd agree, but a combination of domestication + the cat's own personality seems to prove otherwise now and then. One of the cats we have now, for instance, follows me and my mum around the house non-stop, her especially.

My (long deceased) cat Rasputin, used to follow me over to the local school track when I tried to get some exercise, and would sit at the side of the track and watch me go around until he got board and went over to where some kids were playing B-ball and sucked up to them for a bit. he then raced me home when we left. (little bugger cheated. Ran through the hedges I had to go around..)

Never actually seen someone walking a cat successfully, but I know a lot of homes in Japan are kinda small, so maybe this guy is just trying to get his cat more exercise than at home.

If you train them or sometimes when they get old from my experience. One of my toms started to tag along for walks as he got older. Another tom was trained on a leash when he was 1 yr. old. Our current cat a female just doesn't like a leash.
