    A co-worker who came from Hong Kong, calls the Chinese food we get here "Canadian Chinese" food. :) She used to manage a take-out place and said while it was edible, it wasn't "authentic". She often brings in "real" snacks from time to time. (Wed. she brought in these awesome curry beef triangle things. Yum!)

      It's not so bad here in Toronto, but then again we have a huge Chinese population here. No avoiding the fact that a lot of Chinese cuisine here is adjusted to cater to the general population though.

        Right, our family owns a Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant. But the food is pretty much altered to fit the tastes of Canadians. Its really not Chinese food at all, not compared to the stuff in Toronto.

                Actually, in my experience, the sketchier a Chinese place looks the more "authentic" the food gets. xP The ones who bother to make everything look pretty tend to be aiming for the general populace.

                Of course there are plenty of exceptions, but just a general rule, I find.

        I've lived at Pacific Mall Area for almost 20 years (before it was even built) and I've seen the change. What we have in the GTA area is as authentic as it gets now. Only Van city has more asian food and that is because of how much larger the Japanese community is out there.

        I need a definition on Chinese food --> because china is huge =P and different areas of china have different taste. Some part of Chinese tend to make things more spicy, hot, sweet or salty depending on area of course.

        In Toronto and any region around that area... nothing taste like hong kong food. The different is just... too big i suppose. But it is edible.
        I think ppl prefer Japanese or Korean food (Chinese in general) more than Chinese food in the markham region ^^" (@ least that's my preference~)

      Mmm, that pork & cabbage reminds me of the pepper steak & onions dish that I get from my main Chinese fix, the Mongolian Grill!!

      The dish that I get is a combination of Mexican chicken, General Tso's chicken, honey chicken, and either pepper steak or pork fried rice. If you're wondering about the Mexican chicken, hold your WTFs cuz this chicken's the bomb, pyo!

    "How does Chinese food taste in your neck of the woods?"

    As with many things I suspect the first answer will be "It depends on where you are" and, in this case, "It depends on who's cooking."

    That said, the Philippines has long had a strain of Chinese culture embedded in its history, and that comes out best in the Chinese food that we have here. I can name off several places where the Chinese food is most excellent: the great and venerable institution of Ma Mon Luk (AMAZING noodles and cha xiu bao); popular fast-casual places such as Super Bowl and Flavours of China; and even fastfood outlets such as Chowking.

    Just last night my BF and I stuffed ourselves silly on some gorgeous steamed tofu at yet another fast-casual/family place called Le Ching.

    And don't forget all those nameless holes-in-the-walls stuffed here and there throughout our major Chinatown, located in Binondo, Manila! We're really lucky because we're spoiled for choice here when it comes to Chinese food!

    The Chinese restaurants are usually owned by Chinese people. They are usually in areas with a large Asian demographic so you'll get food that's true to the country.

    I don't think anywhere in the United States can beat SoCal when it comes to the amount of Chinese food we have, especially in the city I live in. Cheap and tasty Chinese food make it so I don't ever want to leave California. Areas like Monterey Park and the surrounding areas can probably give China a run for its money when it comes to Chinese restaurants per square feet. :p

    Well most places here in the states have the California soft version of Chinese / Japanese / Korean / Indian food so its tame when it comes to heat plus contents and is generally sweet. That being said I did have the chance to enjoy some cold jelly fish salad the other day as well as some freshly made true sushi and a nice octopus salad as well at a local establishment near my home. There is also a Japanese fast food joint in the mall that makes a good chicken teriyaki and two other places that make traditional Korean and one other regional style that I can't remember but want to try when my wife is not around ( she's a chicken when it comes to trying new things ).

    as far as I know....US regards Chinese food what ever is close to orange chicken, and sweet meat. At least that is what I see present in every Chinese restaurant I've walked in. However I have tasted what I think is closer to what real Chinese food is like: my local take out changed owners to a recent arrived Thai guy and he changed the Chinese food to a more salty meaty mixes and added other new stuff to the menu which were Thai. so I am not sure if it is chinese salty... but you know what i mean i hope.... Chinese food is pretty good here, (Richmond, BC)~
    But.. what Danny is having doesnt seem very chinese at all ;;

    Anyways, ^ @Balry, you are pretty correct about chinese food = sweet/sour chicken/pork for the US, or really... non-chinese/asians in general... I still remember working at a restraunt, and 2 customers asked for more sauce.... Problem was...

    Customer @ Sweet/Sour Pork + Rice ---> Wanted Soy Sauce
    Customer @ Chow Mein ----------------> Wanted Sweet/Sour Sauce

    Orz, whatever suits them i guess XD

    As many has commented already. Authentic chinese food only in China. =P
    Here in Perú, the chinese food receive the name: Chifa. Which is a mixture of peruvian ingredients and chinese preparation. Prices vary by restaurant but one won't deny its one of the favorites here. =)~
    I'm not brave enough to take pictures of chinese food in a restaurant ^-^;

    I've found the Chinese food in NYC to be pretty good and not too different from what I've tried in HK or China. And I'm not talking about little take-out restaurants with general tso's chicken and beef and broccoli. We have two pretty big Chinatowns as well as many scattered Chinese communities all over the city. A lot of these locations have restaurants opened by Chinese immigrants who come directly from China and I would think the owners open these restaurants with the intent to cater to Chinese just like them. Of course the menu is much more limited than what you will find in China but you can still get some pretty good authentic Chinese food if you pick a good (non-touristy) restaurant in Chinatown.

    From the fingers of a person whose lived in China for 14 years:
    Eating in China is like gambling if you're a tourist. There's a good chance you'll end up regretting whatever you have consumed for a meal (Your stomach is the signal). But they taste good, not healthy but good.

    In Canada (Vancouver) however, we have enough "authentic" Chinese chefs here so it's pretty much like eating in China without so many risks.

    I love the Chinese food in my area, but it's quite unhealthy. So only eating it from time to time is okay.

    Chinese food in Italy depends on how much you want to spend, but you can assume that most of the food is cantonese one, because most of the chinese here comes from Canton, and of course has been adjusted a bit to the taste of local people.
    Some very expensive restaurant have a better selection of chinese foods and is better quality too
