According to ANN, Newtype USA is to cease publication. Have only read the Japanese Newtype so cant comment on the USA version - was it not up to par? We previously had a poll and interesting discussion where most of you you said you prefer subs than dubs but is the the same for your anime mags? Do you prefer Japanese or localized versions?
All time japanese. US version stands no chances.
Either is fine with me, but it's nice to know what I'm reading... Really wish they weren't stopping publication...It's the only anime magazine in my area...
I'm neutral... but I'll go for the one giving away free figures...
>.> english simply because I can actually read it. I honestly didn't even know Newtype had a USA release
i have a subscription to both Newtype JPN and Newtype USA and i can tell you that the latter is nothing compared to the former. in fact, i'm not all that surprised that Newtype USA is ceasing publication because a) it's expensive as hell b) it has so little content compared to the original c) they cover the same old animes over and over again, and they're all old stuff compared to the ones being aired on japanese tv d) lots of spelling and grammar mistakes, the editor should shoot himself e) the subscription service they have is horrible, you're lucky to get 5 issues if you're on a 12 month subscription besides, i don't really read Newtype USA for the articles, it supposed to be quote "the moving pictures magazine" and it fails to deliver
It made sense in the beginning (I read it for at least the first year thinking how professional it was). Then I started to notice the same things you did: it was recycling the same materials... and more often than not: all materials licensed by ADV Films. Then a few years later, I decided to pick up an issue at the newsstand and was shocked that with tax, the magazine was like $18CAD! No wonder it's not selling...
Well I prefer the japanese ones for the posters and other stuff given, the english only because I can read it. It's a bit sad that newtype usa is going to cease production since I've been pretty much buying it for more than 2 years now.
I like the japanese magazines because they have better stuff, but I usually buy the english ones since I can read them.I have been with Newtype USA since '03 so this is a bit hard on me.
I know Animerica made the switch some time ago and Newtype USA was quite an expensive alternative, one would think it was a scientific journal. In any case a localized version is preferable and the internet fills all the gaps in between. this new PiQ magazine sounds like what this site and other sites have been doing, Danny did you put them out of business with this damned fine site of yours?
Honestly, I'm not really surprised. The subscription costs (last time I checked) was close to 90 USD. (9,800 yen) for a 12 issues. Most US magazines are about 12-20 for 12 issues, a huge difference in price. They claimed the extra cost came from translation, DVD, higher quality printing. The only they had nice was the centerfolds (dont care for the DVD because its anime I've already seen). I recall them having like what must of been 5 issues where the cover story was Gundam Seed. It's not worth it at all.
i would prefer japanese versions then the localized ones
yeah, the content is rather lacking...nice big pics but thats it...but for US otaku, Otaku USA is in print now...more honest reviews of current US released Anime...but two months between issues leaves much to be wanting...Anime Insider is also out here...but it all pales in comparison to the Japanese anime mags...
Never read Otaku USA, is it any good compared to Newtype USA? Or should I just stop buying North American anime magazines.
Otaku USA is Ok if you like older shows and yaoi manga or whatever. To me that's what it seems to be mostly. It's only $10 so it's not as expensive and you still get a DVD too.
Yeah it isnt that great. I only bought one issue to get my hands on a welcome to the NHK poster
seen it in bookstore, but never bought it...
I read neither, simple because it would take a fortune + a miracle to get it all the way over here...
I've seen a Newtype USA a couple of times in Dutch book stores (my local Bruna had it a few times). But man the selling price was rediculously high!
I'm taking a guess, but Newtype Japan would sell many times more copies of Newtype USA. That's the reason: too few copies of Newtype USA to be viable.
i've only bought USA thrice. Honestly though, Japan is better. USA focuses more on newly dubbed anime or something, Japan is more on the new releases. heh, just bought January's issue of Newtype Japan today...love the illustration calendar
I have never bought the Newtype USA magazine before so I am not sure about the inside content. For me, I will not think of buying the localized version just because I will be able to read it as the information may not be the latest as compare to the japanese version.^^
I hate the DVD that came with Newtype USA. It wasn't on the Japanese version, and this DVD is really raising up the prices unnecessarily.
Danny i think it a great possible to take over the role of newtype and start your ownmagizine. Jk Definately newtype is to expensive. I thought to myself if I should get it or not. But after i read some of it from my friend, i decide i'd blow my otaku budget somewhere elese.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had only just decided to start buying it regularly!! WHY THE HELL??!!! It's so awesome.... so much better than the magazine we have in the UK.... so much more colourful... :cries:
While not as good as its Japanese cousin, Newtype USA was better then most anime mags here. It sounds like this mostly has to do with licensing fees and the fact they lost a lot of advertising dollars with the fall of Geneon. I will miss Newtypy USA.
Well it finally happened. I used to read the USA newtype but found it suspicious that almost all the stuff they cover is licensed by ADV. The articles are sometimes months behind what you can find in the Internets and most of 'em are just plain old uninteresting. Another thing that pissed me off was the fanart section. bad bad bad BAD BAD BAD drawings of Naruto, FMA, Bleach, Sailormoon, Chobits characters again and again and again. I for one am satisfied they put a bullet through its head.
Well ADV did own Newtype USA, so that would explain why you saw so much ADV content.
I'm not really surprised its dying. And Danny it has nothing to do with it being in English it has to deal with the fact that it as a print publication you have to pay for can't keep up with the faster, fluid and free internet. I can thing of half a dozen sites and blogs off the top of my head that can give me the same info Newtype USA would only I would get it weeks before and not pay a dime.
nooooooo! 3 yrs with those people and they r shuttin down? now ill have to try a new mag! grrr...^^
try otaku USA, i have not bought an issue of it but i heard its ok. http://www.otakuusamagazine.com/
With the dawn of the internet, people can get information on anime easily without needing to buy a magazine. What's more, with downloadable fansubs, a person can watch an anime episode sometimes less than 24 hours after it airs in Japan. That's practically instantaneous. Newtype USA focuses primarily on what's being released in the United States, so it's always months (or more) behind Japan. The magazine is practically irrelevant to the serious anime fan. I've also found there's a lot more -- how shall I say this -- girly material? inside Newtype USA, as opposed to its Japanese counterpart. I've only purchased a few issues of the magazine, and I've found it to have less of what I'm looking for. It almost seems to be geared towards a younger audience. So there you have it.
why blow the money when we get latest info that we needed from dannychoo? =D other than danny, just i usually just go to wikipedia. stupid anime magazine here are "really slow" in news
Don't forget members' blogs. ;)
We only have like 2 mexican magazines, and some spanish ones. I personally don't like the mexicans, and some time ago used to buy the spanish ones, though now I only get my info from the internet, but whenever i come across a japanese publication, if I have the money I buy it ^^
i prefer the Newtype JPN over Newtype USA anytime. it may be expensive here but it's worth every cent ^^
This news hit me really hard. I've been subscribed to Newtype USA since issue #3. It was my favorite magazine, and I just renewed my subscription only a month ago. This was easily the worst news I've had all week. ;_;
U.S.A. it's ok! but Japanese version it's way better!!^^ altough i can't read japanese my cousin reads it 4 me & they have good stuff!!!
to all who says "Japanese is the choice" while i see why, but don't forget that some of us do not speak Japanese so we would like to read in language we can understand. I'm sadden to see this, while I never read this mag I had a positive impression about it and considered maybe subscribing to it so I can get latest anime news. Weird to see this too since anime popularity is growing in USA.
I've been buying Japanese Newtype on and off from the beginning (is it about 20 years already?). That is before I moved to US. The US version, I've only bought the first issue. Even the very first issue, I found it to be disappointing because of the content is old, missing content and mistake in the translation. I've checked out a couple more issues on the news stand but was never improved so I keep buying the Japanese version. Its too bad it is going away but I won't miss it at all.
Oh, I didn'd know, that Newtype USA would be gone soon. I guess they didn't even know it in the local comic store, where I bought the latest issue a few days ago. I've been reading Newtype USA for years. Sometimes I've bought the Japanese Newtype, but not so often. I know Newtype USA tells always same stories about Gundam Seed, but they do have also some good content. Besides, I like buying magazines, so I've always bought Newtype USA too. Now I've seen some other American anime mag, but don't know much about it yet. I guess I have to beging reading it. For quite a long time I also used to read British anime magazine called Neo, but haven't bought it lately. There are also a couple of Finnish anime magazines, but I don't buy them, because they don't have so much special content. Anaway, it's sad news that we won't be getting more Newtype USA.
I would like an exact replica of the Japanese mag, with the text replaced with english translation. It could easily be done with their dtp software.
I was thinking the same thing. Since most of the time the people who buys these magazines are people who most likely download fansubs, why not just bring the same version of Newtype JPN to the US? I wouldn't know if it would sell well since the fact it would be info on new anime coming out in Japan and not seeing our shores till a year (or more) later, but it could be worth a shot. Just edit any new DVD releases to the US counterparts and change the text to english, and I think you would be set to go.
this won't work because of a few issues, the biggest one being licensing and copyright D:
I bought a couple of issues to have a look and that was it. Like most western Anime magazines, it was trash. No surprise the plug is being pulled. It's a shame since it could have been something good. Always wanted to see the Korean version... I wouldn't call the Newtype USA a localized version. Very little of the content was from the Japan version. Too much of the coverage was games. We have many great game magazines here now. The editor should have been focusing on content that wasn't getting a lot of coverage here.
I got my subscription renewed as a Christmas gift. What happens to that money they got if I still have ten more issues owed to me after their final one?
you'll get twice the amount of their new anime/game magazine called PiQ. so say they owe you 10 copies, you'll be getting 20 copies of PiQ from what i understand
Have the Newtype JP publishers ever considered a translated edition of Newtype JP for the global market? Of course, you can't translate all the advertisements since its usually not sold overseas except through certain channels. But I am sure that there is plenty of text (of interest to readers globally) that can be translated. They'd make a killing with profits. Take for example "Newsweek", they have their magazines in 12 other languages besides the 4 English editions globally.
It's more expensive than manga and the info always feels old to people who follow fansubs.
Supposedly they'll replace it with a magazine that will cover more than just anime, called PiQ or something. I am a little saddened by this as well since it almost translates the latest Japanese Newtype articles. And I really like reading Megumi Hayashibara's column, CLAMP's column, the voice actress spotlight, etc. I hope the next magazine can stand up to par with that... I don't need another Wizard magazine...
I haven't read either but does the Japan one come with goodies time to time where as the English one doesn't?
At least there's now the English edition of Megami Deluxe magazine.
Aw, Newtype was really cool, even though I didn't subscribe to it. I have a few old issues, and when I looked at them, I couldn't believe how much insider stuff that came true years later. One from 2004 had a big article about Suzumiya Haruhi. Another was talking about the production of Gundam Seed. Pretty cool, though it's sad to see lots of American anime resources go like that. (I miss Anime Invasion...)
I know that the Japanese magazines are far superior, but still, it's sad to see something as big as Newtype go. Ah well, I suppose my news will have to come from Danny Choo and ANN from now on ^_^
I do pick Animerica and Protoculture Addicts way back when otakuness wasn't well too big at that time then,Newtype USA which i bought monthly because of free DVDs that comes in every month compare to Newtype Japan that you'll never know what you gonna get;Anime Insider was good in their first few months of publication but not a single freebie in the latter end which i regretted it.PiQ was a crap i'd tell you, better pick an Empire magazine.Otaku USA was good though but less and less pages that comes out every month which i don't know why; but now,i can both speak and read japanese,i bought Newtype Japan but they always cover Gundams as my non-otaku friend called this by swearing Gundamit(now i know why they are called Newtype magazine,d'oh;Lucky Star and Code Geass freebies wasn't bad at all, though).I don't know much about Animage but i would be grateful if you'd put a little insight on it.
They claimed it didn't go under due to the price of the mag, but thats just what they told us. I think it's just cause ADV is starting to suck a lot and are struggling to achieve anything these days. Who really knows what went on. Anyway its progeny PiQ is already dead, only lasted 4 issues. Good riddance too.
localized versions, because i can't read japanese
