That would really be handy in vey high end camera/video equipment. Not to mention smaller TIVOs and the such.

I'm hoping the 2nd generation of iPod Touch will amp it up. You know they can, they're just holding back.

Tom's Hardware has been following these drives for over a year now. Toshiba and a few other companies have been sending them also their drives with every revision, and Tom's team has been running benchmarks against the best of todays SATA and SCSI drives. Funny, I didn't think it would be this soon, but from the benchmarks, it lokos like these are the thing to get once they become affordable.

I don't mind the "128 gb limit." *cough* I have a 1TB external for that, which I don't even access more then once every few months [for backup]. But with almost no power draw, instant startup time for programs [including the OS], and no worries of mechanical failure... Hell yes! I can't wait.

Ill probably grab once in about a year or so, when they go down in price, same as with a BlueRay burner. I saw an LG BR burner/HD reader/DL DVD burner at Frys today for $399!

yea i wouldnt mind getting one but security is going to be a problem until some finds a way to securely erase data off them.
writing over them several time using the DoD method, or 37 times, will no longer apply as their not magnetic drives anymore meaning confidential file can no longer be safely fully erased before hard drive resale. this applies to those pen drives too. all you can really do is encrypt but they can be hacked.

as with all new hardware its best to wait it out a while till you buy so that people can work out all the kinks.

Anybody knows how long does it usually take for something like this to go down in price?

I can't wait to get one, when it's become cheaper!

My best guess would be a couple months maybe, no more than a year at most.

Yeah, the turnover rate in technology is incredibly fast, and speeding up more all the time.

One thing to keep in mind is that SSDs are still not as reliable as conventional HDDs. They have a higher failure rate. To implement such technology right as it becomes available would be fairly imprudent. However, I'd venture to guess that you can start seeing them utilized widespread comes late 2008/early 2009.

I was about to say the same thing:

Don't put your hands on it. Or your brain my get hacked, and you might have to kill yourself to potentially save your kids. Or motoko will help you, with her cyber-Tachikoma soldiers.

I've heard that some laptops use solid state drives but I wonder if one could use this on an old laptop, the connectors seem a lot different from an ide cable.

would love to use this SSD drive for my booting disk
btw, new stuff usually brings new problems, is there any risk of failure in this kinds of disk?
*goodbye fragmented files ^^

File fragmentation has nothing to do with how fast a disk is, that's up to the file system and the OS to do.
Defragmentation would be faster indeed though ;p

I would really love for these things to get cheaper, would want it right away. It's fast, small and doesn't weigh a thing. It's almost perfect, and I don't really mind the security about erasing stuff. (at the moment)

In my opinion, the only factor that could come to mind for a iPod Touch with this drive is the cost. If the drive is too expensive, not many people will buy it.

I agree Danny. I don't like the current release iPod touch memory size. If they can pass up mmmm.. maybe about 80 GB for an iPod touch, I'll reconsider getting one. That way I can modify my video files to play on there and it'll be worth it. Yes that's right If you guys got anime iPod touch is your friend...

apple can go to hell
they've made suckers of us all.
most apple motherboards are full-custom and that's a bad thing.

Take for example:
Your laptop screen is spoiled. You can't swap the screen from another laptop of the same make. With Apple you must replace the whole gddamed thing
