An Onsen is a hot spring and there are many located throughout Japan. They usually are separated between men and women but you will occasionally come across mixed onsen - and if you do then this is what you may see. Larger version at moe.imouto.org.

i went to one when i was in japan, it was somewhere in the osaka area, i have no idea where, i just remember it was when i went to universal studios.

I really want to go to an onsen, just to see what it's like. However, people stare at me as it is- if I have my boobies out as well... I'm guessing the stares would get *really* uncomfortable....

When I was in Japan in October, I went to an Onsen in Sanda with my hosts and my daughter. My daughter chickened out (and I can't blame her, she's very self conscious) but I had an awesome time. Don't worry about stares. One thing I realized there is that no one really cares what you look like. I may have gotten some odd looks, but I'm not exactly asian, so it's probably natural. I definitely want to go back again. I had such a great time, and felt so relaxed (I highly recommend a stone bath if you get the chance), in fact more relaxed and refreshed than I've ever been from a shower or bath previously. Afterwards, we went out for Ramen and Sushi. That really hit the spot! :)

was always a fan of onsens, been to 4 different ones in my life, really enjoyable experience, sadly, they were not mixed and there was a giant wall separating the men's and women's sections. and regardless of what anime has you believe, no one attempted to sneak a peek at the other side, everyone just sort of went about their own business and relaxed.

lol in shakugan no shana ova the onsens are divided by thin wooded wall which has some easy opening spot on it. So it's actually divided by giant wall, eh.. >_

At the Onsen I went to in Sanda, the Women's and Men's Onsens were on completely separate sides of the building. So there were many walls separating them. Heh.

I have been waiting to try out Onsens ever since I heard of them. But till now, no chance =( But I'm going to Japan soon, and Onsens are the No.1 item on my "To visit" list, lol.

Went to a great mixed onsen in Gunma-ken with some of the young teachers at the school I was teaching at. Tons of sake, beer and nakedness. . .good times. . .
