Some of dannychoo.com's OS stats taken from the latest log of 18,000 entries. LOL at MS's attempt to get users to upgrade to Vista. I got rid of my last physical Windows machine last week-ish and am now emulating Windows in my Macs for QA purposes. When I was using Windows however, I didnt see any need to upgrade to Vista at all - XP worked just fine. I used Tiger for quite a while even though Leopard was out for a while - reason was that the Apache, PHP and MYSQL settings were different and an upgrade would have broke my dev environment which I didn't have time to fix back then. Am using Leopard now though and the upgrade is most certainly worth it. Anybody here cant be bothered to upgrade their OS - and if so why? OS girl image from Gelbooru.
I upgraded to vista and I really don't see the point of it, oh well at least I didn't pay. and I still think PC > Mac ;)
Yeah I be one of your XP users. I actually dislike Vista badly. I still prefer PC over Mac but I have been using Mac a bit more recently and think its pretty good but still prefer pc.
PC and Mac are running same hardware architecture which is derived from the IBM PC. They are both PCs now.
Yeah yeah you don't have to get technical about it lol. Obviously I mean the OS...geeze.
But I would never refer to a Mac as being a PC and I think most people wont either.
Uh oh, I think Steve Jobs did a good job in brainwashing you :P I can't get used to Macs, not customizable at all, and poor support for games. I'd have to dual boot to Vista/XP and if that's the case I might as well use Vista/XP 24/7
As a fellow Mac user, I have to agree with you Danny. I think the OS is a significant enough difference to classify the Mac as it's own sub-group for PCs.
As a fellow mac user, I'd have to disagree. You'd mind as well do the same to all Linux.
Thats why should classify it by OS and not PC vs Mac. PC refers to the IBM PC(and clones), which current apple products are a direct descendant from.
Yeah, talk about OS and hardware. I love Apply hardware, but i love win XP and linux more than MacOSX. And quite surprising, i just learned that MacOS is actually running on UNIX - which is the same core of Linux....
Yup you're right, Macs will always be called Macs, until the day Steve Jobs decide to name them StormTroopers. Hmm, TrooperBook Pro and Trooper Mini. On to the topic, I usually upgrade to the latest OS once I get my hands on it, but only after doing a full bootable backup. Generally, Mac OS X major upgrades comes with major performance improvements, and it's always fun poking around the new features. I have Vista Ultimate x64 bootcamped, and it certainly runs fast, even on my now obsolete MBP hardware. However, it's been months since the last time I had to reboot into it now...
I tried Windows Vista for a few weeks. It was the worst experience with any operating system to date, and i had to live through 98 T_T The thing is just such a resource hog my gaming rig would even lag because of it (I have 4Gb DDR2 800Mhz DualChannel, a 5200+ X2, and a 9800GTX+) I switched back to XP because the benefits of DX10 were not worth the lag and the crashes and the constant pop-ups.
I upgraded to Vista64 because its the most stable and compatible of the MS 64-bit OSes (XP64 is horrible), because my computer currently has 8GB of memory, and you need a 64-bit OS to address that much RAM. I also game on my PC a lot, and say what you will about DirectX 10, but I like to run my PC games at the best quality on my NVIDIA GTX 280.
yeah, I'm also upgrading to vista64 for the same reason, big amount of ram (8GB) is essential for me and some software I'm using works only in windows environment. Also I think with some tweaks and disabling unnecessary annoying features it might start working faster. Also I'm considering to checkout Windows Server 2008, some say it is basically the same vista but with less demand for system resources.
I use XP, I wanna get a Mac, but still use my PC
Use Vista, been tweaking alooong time on it before it was functionable (never again). So next time i format, i might go back to XP.
lol at winME XDD Im one of the XP version, but...as soon as I can, wanna be Linux user.
I'm actually amazed that there's still so many people using ME.
I'm amazed that still so many people using Window$ though
In my job I work with pretty much any open operating system you can think of, so I've had my fair share of usage diversity. The result of my experiences is my main machine is XP for gaming, my HTPC in the living room is Vista (for mce), my router is a linux box, and my laptop for going places where I need a screen is a macbook.
It's one of those thing you just can't help.
Legitimate XP user. I also have legitimate Vista in another partition but only boot there to test something every blue moon. Need to upgrade hardware before considering using Vista, and me wishes Microsoft would be cool for a change and upgrade Vista users to Windows 7 or whatever the replacement OS is, free of charge—it has to be better, right?
there is too much vista :P
using xp 64bit here. wont upgrade to vista. will switch directly to windows 7 or whatever os its called that's coming in 2009.
I can't really upgrade to Vista for two reasons. 1. My PC sucks, can't sustain Vista well. 2. World of Warcraft won't run on Vista, this is the core reason -_- And now that expansion is around the corner, more reason keep torture my poor Xp >.> Plus I don't really have fond memories of Mac. It was really long time ago, like 10 years ago or so. I was a computer science major(gave it up long time ago though) and so I would spend hours in computer lab coding and what not. We used Mac to do so every so often, Mac will crash with that stupid bomb icon and it would drive me crazy. Ever since then, I don't like Mac all that much. I don't even use Ipod >.>
You can try right-clicking on the desktop icon of WOW then go to properties, then click on the compatibility tab, then check the box you see under the words "compatibility mode" and make sure Windows XP (service pack 2) is selected. So if you have any other program that doesn't work for Vista then do the steps I just typed. Vista is basically all Microsoft's OS's put together in one.
Vista x64 user since the launch. The best OS MS released until now in my opinion! I don't know why there are so many XP user out there (Except those who have an old PC)
I for one prefer Vista over XP. I tend to see XP as a virus breeding OS but Vista's not that better off either. ^^;;
LOL I'm still using Windows XP... I need to get myself an upgrade...
On my mac side I try to keep as up to date as I can, pre-ordered Tiger when it was coming out and got Leopard the first weekend it was out. I have XP as well, but I really don't like using it and only use it for gaming, I don't bother installing any updates.
XP user, I would love to up-grade to Vista but to scared too. So much to get used to and to scared something bad happen. Maybe when I get 8gb I'll do it then.
currently using Vista, and will be reformatting to XP in a few hours due to licensing issue (the CA doesn't provide Vista anymore and the key I got already overactivated). It's a good os though, assuming you have >=2Gb of RAM.
Using Mac OSX Tiger… have not upgraded to Leopard out of pure laziness. Maybe when I “aquire” CS4 ;)
The only reason which made me switch from WinXP to Vista was DX10... and in the end the game i wanted to play with DX said on it's release they won't support DX till december lol... i quit it after 6 days playing anyhow. So, now i am stuck with 2 Vista machines and one XP, all work the same though - no real problems. I think it depends a lot in the person running the OS as well, their behaviour in the internet and with taking care of the system... MacOS doesn't have as high requirements on system maintenance as windows has, which makes it really comfy to use for non-tech people. Someday however i will get me a macbook again, just cuz i like em. :)
Got my iMac with Tiger installed, but with the Leopard CD. Installed Leopard on my iMac and Macbook ^_^
my hubs actually help me downgraded to XP with a lot of trouble cos they kinda hard installed vista into my poor laptop. Vista was killing my time and laptop lol Now XP is still kinda buggy but worked a lot faster ^^;
emulating Windows as well... I get weird faces when I boot up windows on my mac...
I'm currently sticking to XP. Until I have enough money to buy a new/upgrade my existing PC, I'll put Vista.
I'm not going to update to fedora 9, currently I'm using fedora 8. Fedora 9 has KDE4.0 (full of bugs) and new X server didn't work with ATI gfx card drivers. Don't know yet wether to wait for fedora 10 or change to ubuntu. lol, someone still uses win98 to visit your site.
I have a Mac on Tiger, my mom has an XP, and my dad's office has Vista. I worked at his office over the summer, and I can say, Vista sucks like a horseshoe. Seriously. They tried to fix stuff that wasn't broken, and so therefore made it more broken than it was originally. I haven't upgraded to Leopard yet but my roommate has. She didn't notice too much difference, but then again, she doesn't exactly poke around in it much. However, I've heard the Adobe CS3 products don't work so well on Leopard, so I'll probably wait until Snow Leopard comes out before even considering upgrading.
I am mostly on Mac OS X (10.5) these days, but I (unfortunately) have to use XP from time to time. I usually upgrade Mac OS fairly quickly.. It is usually worth it, though there are the occasional development environment issues. Never have upgraded my PC, never will ^^
I don't think I really need to upgrade to Vista, nor do I think my computer could handle it. I would be a 100% Linux user if my sound card and DJ software worked 100% in it, but it's all still buggy. So close, yet so far...
I use Vista 64bit on Motoko-chan to use the full 4Gb of Ram she has, I've had no real problems with Vista except Ati video drivers issues when I first got it which were fixed with recent Catalyst drivers. Besides that it's stable, but it's rather slow, I see no speed improvement using Vista on an E6750 with 4Gb of PC6400 Ram compared to XP on a socket 939 Sempron 2800+ with 1Gb of Ram. On Akari-chan (my "Aria" PC) I use Mandriva Linux, quite happy with that and its 3D desktop but it has the drawback of several issues I've yet to really fix well. So I'm pondering if I'll run XP, Linux or Hackintosh on it. I'd like to try Hackintosh on it to check OS X's stability and usability, but I'm not keen on giving up the 3D desktop of Compiz, it's eye-candy but also has great functionality once you get used to it. It's always a pickle though, I'm considering getting a Mac to have something guaranteed to work and be stable, but it's also more unflexible hardware wise.
My main machine uses XP 64bit, my laptop uses Vista Ultimate 32bit, my work laptop (wich needs a new screen -_-) has XP 32bit... I also have a Linux machine to play around and to organize my files, used to run TigerOS on a Virtual Machine but removed it for the sake of pushing myself closer to buy an actual MAC ^^
If my brother hadn't broken my laptop, I'd still have XP, lovely, reliable XP.... bloody graphic intensive Vista...... I wouldn't upgrade unless it was my last option...
there are actually people still using win98
i got vista when i bought a new machine, i am a sucker for pretty things hurhur
I purchased a laptop for uni and to replace my aging desktop. Unfortunately, Lenovo didn't include the option of installing XP instead of Vista... Given this laptop is quite good, I can handle Vista but using Vista on the cheap campus computers is just stupid... it takes a couple of minutes to load when I need to only check my email. I'd never upgrade operating systems unless it was absolutely necessary to do so. Thats why I used win2k even after Vista came out. It was less demanding and faster. The other reason I didn't update was because I couldn't afford a new computer until recently...
I'm using Vista (32 bit) for over a year now and I prefer it over XP. It's a nice and stable OS ...as long as you don't mess around too much with it or install shitty drivers that is. My first encounter with Windows XP was when I bought a new computer around Christmas 2001. I had my fair share of stability issues and I hated the new Luna theme. What was even worse were the security issues. It was basically like: -make a fresh install -connect it to the net (without a router) -wait a few minutes -get a brand-new computer worm Since then most of these issues have been addressed by service packs (SP 1 and SP 2). In 2003 I bought a copy of Suse Linux (back then it wasn't freeware) and gave it a try. After a few days of tinkering around with it I decided to use it as my main OS. In the following years I've been trying out various distros (my favourites were Suse, Arch Linux and PCLinuxOS) and hardly ever missed Windows. In march 2007 my computer was replaced by a new laptop with Vista pre-installed. I was pleasantly surprised. It was quite stable and the default settings were quite reasonable (from a security point of view). Of course, I would still like to install Linux on it but the laptop's HDD is quite small and I don't want to waste precious disk space by installing a second OS. I can't get rid of Windows yet because I still have to use a few Windows-only programs to get my studies done. (No, WINE doesn't help.) All in all from all the Windows versions I've tried so far (3.1, 95, 98, NT, XP, Vista) Vista is the one I like the most. Rant over! *lol*
Imma hybrid vista and xp user!
Im a long time Debian Linux user (servers) who switched to Ubuntu on the desktop around 2 years ago with Edgy. Will not be going back to Windows either.
Wow, 7 people using WinME!!! Impressive!!! So, my current laptop came preloaded with Windows Vista. I tried to keep it for a month. A month... in hell. It's a long story, but suffice to say it's the worst experience I even had with an OS... and I've gone through almost all OSs (starting on Basic). Vista Ultimate, on my Dell XPS 1330. After unboxing it, had my first BSOD after like 5 minutes of testing. XP PRO SP2 on the other hand, which I'm using right now, NEVER had problems. No BSODs, with the computer running months non-stop, with tons of processes opened at the same time. I know user experiences vary from computer to computer. I know people who had great experiences with Vista, I know people who had more problems with XP than ME. But based on my personal experience, I'll never switch to Vista. Don't care for the extra Aero looks and never had security issues with XP so I have no reason to want the extra security Vista claims to have. The only thing I liked on Vista was the search features... which just isn't enough.
Yeah. As long as you don't go installing tons of crap software to your WinXP machine then it should be fine without BSODs. My WinXP is able to run without any BSODs for a month plus after which I usually reboot it. BSODs on WinXP usually occurs due to bad drivers or some hardware conflicts with your OS.
At work i use XP and at home I use Vista and Ubuntu. I was a beta tester for Vista and it was horrible and buggy at first. Even after the official release it was still a bit buggy but usuable and most programs werent compatible. Now most programs are compatible and its stable and more secure. Im using a laptop that has XP and i complain that i use XP. The laptop is old so i know it wont run Vista. Just last night the laptop crashed and XP wouldnt start up. Had to do a clean install. Last time i used a Mac was aeons ago and i hated it with a passion. Right now I would try a mac for a second chance but since my funds are limited, i'm staying with "Winblows" and Linux.
I had no choice in the matter of upgrading. I'm using Ecchi's computer and it has Vista on it. I would prefer XP honestly. I mean vista has a few good qualities about it but XP was way better.
win xp user here on my main PC. my other PC is running Ubuntu Linux.
My computer used to run off ME but I think XP is much more stable. I totally need a new computer though. XD My dream machine is a Mac with parallels running XP. NICE!
I have Mac OSX Leopard on my MacBook, which I only bought a few weeks ago so Leopard came with it. On my desktop I use Windows XP, I don't see much reason for me to upgrade to Vista due to that my desktop computer wouldn't be able to handle it and also that I played around with it on my old laptop and I didn't really like it. I may try to update my desktop but I doubt I will.
Ubuntu Hardy on my laptop... can't wait for Intrepid release.... Vista at work... once you get used to it, it isn't so bad... all Windows are like that.
i'm actually curious on the 245 users in the "unknown" OS category...lol...wonder what weird OS they are running
Probably RTM editions (beta or pre release) or hacked versions of XP that have alot of homebrew modifications. Theres a huge amount of those running around.
Probably BSD or UNIX.......something like that
I'm still on XP since in order to upgrade to Vista I'd need to buy a completely new PC or laptop and XP is working just fine for me...
I use only Windows XP... don't really think Vista is really worth it. Can't afford it either D:
I dont think people upgraded to vista I think it came with their new laptops LOL! at work we use MAC but at home I use PC-XP but I plan to buy a Macbook Pro this coming week because sometimes fonts mess up going from MAC to PC when working at home
Linux!!!! that's me ^^ my Ubuntu Laptop or my SuSE Desktop ^^
My Macbook Pro dual boots Vista Ultimate and OSX Tiger. I'm happy with both - right now I use them 50/50. On the MBP - which CAN run Vista - I love it. It's smoother, and since I meticulously label files the fact that it recognizes 10 comes after 9 is awesome. And I haven't had to install any drivers. However, I also have a desktop that used to run XP. Upgraded it to Vista since I had the opportunity to do it for free, and it lags like crazy. I haven't even installed anything besides Bittorent on it, since I just use it to download stuff now. The startup cycle takes 2, 3 minutes. Vista's awesome for computers that can run it comfortably, but for those that can't it's hell.
I've been using Leopard for quite a long time now. Best OS ever.
Been using Vista for a year now... not much problem. I see a lot of people complaining about the speed of Vista, but I'm running it on a 5 years old hardware (p4 2.4, 1gb ram) and I don't have any performance issue. The only issue I have is that my hardware is too damn old and the hardware manufacturer have stopped making Vista driver for it! D:<
I use Vista for a very legitimate reason. Vista has some very awesome Tablet PC functions which I need. Handwriting recognition(even for Japanese characters like kanji!) is amazing, I use Office One Note to take notes during my lectures. Then there is the Speech Macros, dictating letters is near perfection. http://lifehacker.com/391884/control-your-pc-with-your-voice It's really to grown on me, but ultimately, the downfall is the amount of resources it consumes.
slackware linux user here..both at main desktop and laptop... mixed path between slackware stable and slackware current ...updared almost every week for slackware current :D
I can't be bothered to upgrade to Vista from XP because... well, Vista is pretty pointless to me >_>
Used Vista on the first day it came out, and from my experience it was pants. It was buggy, imcompatible with my older programs, slow to run and damn annoying with that stupid UAC thing. Since then I vowed never to use Vista and stick with XP, virtually all my computers runs Windows XP Professional. I received my new laptop today which came with Vista and first thing I done with it was wipe it out and plonk XP on! Though I do miss using Windows 98 though when I used to play my old skool DOS games and it was a treat! Bit brave using it in today's climate though. o_o
I'm sticking with Win2K for the time being. It does everything I need it to do, and has a light footprint for my hardware. Nowadays, I do most of my gaming on my DS or my Wii, so it's not a big deal to have a slower computer. It does all my CG art just fine. I think that when I upgrade, I'll switch to Linux. I've had good luck with Linux so far, so I figure a couple more years will make Linux even better.
