Beowulf

Beowulf
The ads for Beowulf are on Japanese TV now and thought that the film looked interesting. I then see the trailer up at Apple and realize that this is a full CG movie? Soon they wont need actors anymore. Has anybody seen this yet?

I haven't seen it, and I really don't want to. I just don't like the idea of animation that strives to be so realistic looking that it kind of defeats the purpose of animation. At that point, you might as well just go with real actors. I much prefer a stylized look for the characters when it comes to animation (like the Pixar movies or anime).

They used CG extensively on the main character's actor to turn him from a man in fifties to some 20-something demon-slaying warrior.

not sure if the things i'm about to say are true but i'll say them anyways.
don't you think having things blown up and having real actors cost a LOT more than getting a company to do CG work?
i company can save a lot of money going towards CG and probably cost less for them to just have to voice act rather than actually doing the scene.

i personally have no desire to watch this movie because it doesn't tickle any of my interest areas, i prefer future stuff rather than medieval stuff

I saw this on TV, on a Fest, they showed a trailer... its all CG and voices... perhaps with vocaloid2 we can have full 3D persons will full synth voice, wow, that will be huge.

I saw this movie.
I did not enjoy it that much. CG for females was very bad and the biggest prob with CG characters is that they are still not able to do faces that well. Story line was a bit boring and overall movie is over rated. This movie has no "WOW FACTOR" in it.

Yup. I watched it in full 3D at the IMAX using the circular polarisation glasses (they look like sunglasses). VERY COOL. The movie itself is OK, but things coming out the screen is just plan awesome.

I went to see The Nightmare Before Christmas 3D last year too, but it clearly shows that they have improved the whole system, 3D looks better, less headaches and over all, so much crispier.

But only cinemas with digital screens can enjoy this film, so I guess that pretty much cuts out 90% of the world.

The last CG movie I saw with overly-realistic characters was "Final Fantasy The Spirits Within" That was absolutely the most boring movie. I wanted to like it, I really did, but really it was the realistic nature of the characters that intrigued me. I think that's how Beowulf will be, but in the end, it all boils down to opinions. They're like buttholes, everyone has one.

Awesome CGI, guaranteed. They did a great job on Grendel too. But, me and my friend felt kinda empty after watching it, which we couldn't really explain. Still, it's a fun watch at least once.

She keeps telling me she's "gonna Beowulf" though. My arm's aching at the thought.

Yeah, I second this. True enough the CG was awesome but not much of the plot. Its kinda too predictable. I felt empty after the movie too.

Well, for the whole thing being in semi-decent CGI wasn't much of an up for me. The plot and movie itself wasn't too appealing to me at all. It wasn't even me who wanted to watch, my brother did, so I took him and this movie was just bad. It probably sits between OK and horrible by my standards, but thats just purely my own opinion.

i've seen it and liked it.. i agree with others that either they should use real actors or more toony like pixar to and others.. just to early for hyperreal characters to be used.. espcecially with motion capture.. motion capture makes it not look rea.. especially if the animators don't clean it up real well.... its a infant business right now.. it'll grow to maturaty fast enough.. :D

At first I have not idea about this movie, so I ask the ticket counter what's this movie is about, the personnel told me is adventure movie about the future, i like futuristic story, so i bought the ticket & watch it. Oh well, at starting point it really amaze me it's actually full 3d CG, but Angelina Jolene had been artificially plastic-modeled, she look perfect in the CG ;-)
Overall its a fantasic movie.

I have just seen this movie a couple of hours ago and I think is great on some things and terrible in others. The CG is just awesome (not all of it, but the principal characters and the environment is incredible... just take a look at Jolie). The voice acting of some of the characters is just terrible and that is my main concern. I suppose that being a good actor doesn't mean you can be a good voice actor. But all in all I had a good time and I think this is very good effort in realistic animation.

I went and saw it a couple of weeks ago. I had only seen a couple of quick TV ad and did realize until a couple of minutes into it that it was CG, it was that good. Now there were point were the realism broke down but I would have to say it it was a very good movie and an outstanding CGI movie. Things have definitely progressed since the CG Final Fantasy movie came out. Give them another 10 years and you will be hard pressed to tell the difference between CGI movies and live action.

Not a bad movie if overused [and I mean O V E R U S E D] "CG" doesn't bother you, but really not worth buying or paying money for tickets. I would rent this one if I were you. I remember watching an old black and white foreign version which was kick ass. I wasn't able to find it on Netflix, sorry. :(

I've seen this show last week and that was the exact comment that ran through my head when I saw it - pretty soon we don't need actors anymore. The CG for humans looked extremely real, especially in a few scenes. However I thought they've yet to master the movements. In some scenes, the running/jumping around didn't look like motion capture to me.

By the way. Angelina Jolie's still HOTTTT! VERY HOT! LOL (^.*)

the movie was just so-so, but the CG was wickedly brilliant.
I watched this movie with my dad, he wouldn't believe me when I told him that the characters were computer generated. ^^ lol
the believe the screenplay was written by a famous sci-fi/comic book writer, Neil Gaiman.

I went to watch the movie with not-so-high expectations after the last couple of full CG movies with "realistic" characters, namely Polar Express and Final Fantasy Spirits within, which were not a bit disappointing when it came to facial animation. Beowulf on the other hand was a pleasant surprise. It was far better than the other two, though still not as good as having real actors.

I always just thought that they did everything in 3D for bragging rights, because this could just as well have been done live with CG elements.

One thing I'll say about it, is NO WAY is it PG-13, like it was advertised here in the Philippines. I'm in my 30's and I had to look away whenever they had a full-screen close up of Grendel. He was disgusting and gross, and the fact that my friend and I were disgusted I guess is a tribute to how good the CG was. There was also no actual sex, but a lot of innuendo.

They got the tone of Beowulf right I'd have to say. He was more than a tad arrogant and was the sort of person who believed his own hype.

All in all, the CG was great, but they understandably seemed to have a hard time fitting the whole epic poem in under two hours.

But if any of you guys have an IMAX theater in your country, watch it there ^_^ The whole movie is in 3D, as in you need glasses, and it really adds to the whole experience.

I watched the movie and I would really recommend that you also watch it Danny. It's the best looking animated movie I've seen to date. I didn't notice that it was animation until about 10minutes into the movie. Yes, the cg was that good. They almost got everything right (they even captured anthony hopkin's look) except for the queen's look which gave it away for me. The skin was too smooth. heheh

The story was good as well, I have a soft spot for anything medieval/barbarians/myth type of stories. :D Check it out and see for yourself.
