The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JPLT) has started to accept applications for the tests this December. Anybody here taking the test? If so which level? Folks who are interested in learning or improving Japanese may want to have a skim through my previous Learn Japanese article - and if you read it you will find out that this magazine is one of the reasons why I needed to learn more Japanese ^^;
Yeah I would take the exam and all but First I guess I have to learn japanese.
I was thinking about taking the test for Level 4, but I have not been studying.
Is there a level -10 for me? XD
Yep, Lv. 4 or possibly lv. 3 depending on how I feel about it.
Did they change the website? it looked different last year.
i hate Language proficiency tests... took me 5 tries just to pass the english one.. even though i learned to speak english when i was like 6 yrs old, and spoken it for like 13 yrs...
ahh i live in texas(US), and the closes test site is in arkansas... come on, seriously? arkansas!? the rest of the test sites are near the coast. My goal is to be able to pass lvl 2 by the end of this year, even if im not taking it.
heard they have a new system now: instead of the previous 1-kyu to 4-kyu they have something like N1 to N5 anyone able to confirm? eagerly wanting to take - but i abit scared of the listening part as I self study without any companions to talk to (except my imaginary friend)
From Wiki:
A new revised test was originally scheduled to begin in December 2009. However, it has been postponed until 2010. The revised test will consist of five levels: N1, N2, N3, N4, and N5. N may be interpreted as being the first letter of either "Nihongo" ("Japanese") or "New".
* N1: generally the same as the original level 1; however, slightly more advanced
* N2: the same as the original level 2
* N3: in between the original level 2 and level 3
* N4: the same as the original level 3
* N5: the same as the original level 4
In addition, the tests will be offered twice a year: July and December. This will go into effect in 2009. The July test will only be offered for levels 1 and 2; by 2010, this will be only level N1 and N2.
The revised test will continue to test the same categories as the original. It will not test oral or writing skills.
heh... so anyone who want to take level 1 jlpt is advised to take it before the new system O_O btw the certificate that the new system give out is it the same as the old system? since the new system have 5 levels
I already applied for the test. I will try 2 kyuu, but I am afraid I will fail. Currently I am taking language classes here in Japan. We tried 3 kyuu in class a few times and I passed every time, so it feels useless to take 3 kyuu in December. If I fail 2 kyuu I will try again in July.
Do not be afraid. Fear will consume you. You will pass.
Warning your young padawan? "Fear is the path to the dark side; I sense much fear in you."
Good luck, you can do it!
If you fail at least you know what to expect the next time you take the test ^^ Just think of it that way.
Good luck on you JLPT. You will pass :)
I'll probably try someday but not this year. Maybe in 2009? I need a lot more studying before I'd have the confidence to take a test.
level 2 i guess. gotta start opening up the textbooks for revisions!
I really need to get off my lazy butt and start learning Japanese again. When I was having to commute to school listening to the Pimsleur disc was a great way use the other wise wasted time.
This is the first time I've ever heard about this test. I must have been living under a rock or something. I took several months of basic japanese classes but quit after I felt I didn't need to be thought this stuff. The class was easier than my french 1 class back in high school.
I always wanted to study Japanese language but I lack effort/time. I'll try to persevere more and at least pass lvl 4, then step by step.
Taking 4 end of this year.
Hm, I wanted to take my JLPT 2/1 this year but have NS...I can pass the JLPT 2 rather easily, but I haven't done a full mock test for JLPT 1 yet, and I don't really want to take it unless I can get at least 90%. And they're adjusting it so I was thinking I'd wait till that happened.
My friend told me about the test a few days back. We might take the test together and give level 2 a try... but I don't know how I'm going to cope with the number of kanji. The test is really close to the date when we depart for Japan though... (3 days after the test)
I'm going after the 3 kyuu, but sadly the exam isn't available here in my country (Colombia). After sending an email to the Japanese embassy, all I got was a "The exam will be available for the first time next year" reply. Guess I'll have to take the exam in the US or something... ^^;
Been self studying Japanese 5 years now and never been able to write the test as it's not offered in South Africa. Finally gonna be there this December so I've got the place I'm staying with to book for me... I went level 3 seen I'm not sure my kanji are good enough for level 2 ^^;
Hm, I think I'll have a try with level 3 although it's not likely to be accomplished. Last December I completed 4.
I'm going for Level 3 ;p (since I passed level 4 last year, but I should start studying a bit more for it, only did my kanji and some grammar until now ;p) The JLPT system is also going to change in 2009/2010 from a 4-level system to a 5-level system.
Taking Level 3. I did level 4 last year, passed with around 75% without study.
Nope, not yet; maybe I'll be ready for the simplest level next year ^^
taking 3 this year
Taking 2 again this year. Any tips on how to breeze thru 2 kyuu??
I am going to take level 2. I think I have a reasonable chance to pass. It is ridiculous that the current test is once a year. You can take the TOEIC test every two weeks. Fortunately the Japanese seem to be getting more serious about helping foreigners to learn their language. I am glad to hear the new N system will allow tests twice a year. A shame it does not begin for two more years.
I'll try it once I get out of the military. Department of Defense has their own language test (Defense Proficiency Language Test). Speaking of which, I have to take it again this year...
wow that's awesome! wish they had it over here then i would have signed up in a jiffy hurhur
I'm planning on taking level 4 this year. I wanted to take level 3 but I just don't have enough time to study the entire scope for lvl3 so I guess I'll start with 4.
Level 4.
My resources are always conflicting.. and since the JLPT isn't offered here.. I'll have to wait a bit. I think I'll be more confident by then.
My sister is applying for level 2 this year. She's constantly finding herself lacking free time but she said she would try her best to see her capability.
hmm...wonder what they test mostly on the kanji's or how u speak the language
The exam is done by multiple choice using aural and written sections. There is no speaking or writing. The kanji to learn are as follows: Level 4 = 0 Level 3 = 500 Level 2 = 1000 Level 1 = 2000 They are introduced in a different order to the order done in Japanese schools or the order in most textbooks. There are textbooks aimed at each level of JLPT.
Gonna try Level 4 this year, it's been almost a year since I touched any nihongo material, but I hope watching anime helped me to improve at least a little.
Shoot, I nearly forgot the deadline for application this year for where I live is August 24th, which is soon. After hearing how ridiculously easy Level 4 was, I decided to just skip that and take the Level 3 exam last year. While it wasn't exactly difficult, it wasn't easy either, so I'm still hesitating whether try my luck at Level 2 this year. I guess I might as well have a go, since the JLPT does feel like a driving test, where you can take many times until you pass. ;) Under the new system, I believe I would be right smack in the new N3 level: good at comprehension and listening (AKA visual/light novels and anime), but crap at speaking and forming new sentences, let alone composition. Sometimes I wonder if my Japanese skills have reached a plateau, where I will have to live in Japan in order to force myself to speak Japanese all the time.
I will take level four in December in Spain (Barcelona). I was thinking about trying directly level 3, but I feel more comfortable with level 4 (it is 80 kanji, and not 0 as stated before... I read this info in the instruction booklet I received along with the application form 2 weeks ago). My goal is to get level 2 by December 2009, I feel like a year is enough time for that (taking private lessons).
i was hoping to take 1 this year but i think i've fallen too far behind on my kanji -_- hopefully 2 is still within reach. (already have lvl 3 under my belt)
I'm not taking the JLPT this year, as far as I know. I can do level 3 right now; I've taken practice tests and passed near perfectly. So I'm just not going to bother this year, and go ahead and sit 1kyuu next year. That reminds me, I should be studying now...
yay... did you said test? i love learning other language more especial in japanese, if your going to take a test, do you think we still need a review, just like other ordinary test, and if you pass it, is there any price!? ^_^
I agree with my husband here, may have to wait until 2009 for this test.:D
I have always wanted to take this test. I'm fresh out of college and have been taking Japanese for about 3 and a half years. I feel weird not taking anymore classes, but I don't want to get lazy. (Already fluent in korean and spanish) Living in nyc helps too because I have a ton of Japanese friends to speak with. I want to take it however.. kanji is not my strong point.Anyway could be fun to try it out next year! *too busy with other work to try this year*
I really want to take the level 4 being as i've only been learning it slowly for the last couple months. Only problem is I have no idea where to get an application >.< Can you apply online? That and the closest place (well apparently the only place) in England is London. Oh and for anyone else thinking of taking the test a really good site to help learning/revision is www.thejapanesepage.com. Taught me all of Hiragana and most of the level 4 kanji quite quickly ^^
