In the first 3 days of release, 1.25 million people went to see the new anime film by Miyazaki Hayao entitled Gake no ue no Ponyo (Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea).
Ponyo plot below taken from Wikipedia.
The plot is centered on a girl fish who runs away from her home in the sea. She ends up stranded on the shore and is rescued by Sōsuke, a five year old boy who lives on a cliff. Sōsuke names her Ponyo after taking a great liking to her, and promises to protect her forever. Meanwhile, her father, Fujimoto, is looking for his daughter, upset that she ran away. He calls his wave demons and has them take Ponyo back to him, since it seems he has an aversion to land. Sōsuke is heartbroken by this, and goes home crying to his mother, Risa. Risa tries to cheer him up, but to no avail. Ponyo and her father have a confrontation, where Ponyo voices her want to become human, because she has started to fall in love with Sōsuke. Her father silences her with difficulty and goes to summon Ponyo's mother. Meanwhile, Ponyo, with the help of her sisters, breaks away from her father's barriers, and mixes herself in with his magic, becoming a human girl. This causes an inbalance in the world, which in turn results in a tsunami. Riding on the waves of the tsunami, Ponyo goes back to visit Sōsuke. Risa, Sōsuke, and Ponyo stay the night at Sōsuke's house, hoping the tsunami will be over, whereupon Risa leaves the house to check up on the residents of the nursing home she works at. Sōsuke and Ponyo wake up to find that the most of the land has submerged. Risa has not come home yet, so, with the help of Ponyo's magic, they turn Sosuke`s toy boat to life size and set out to find Risa. Meanwhile, Risa is talking with Granmammare, Ponyo's mother. Fujimoto notices the moon is deorbited and the satellites falling like shooting stars. Granmammare declares that if Sōsuke and Ponyo succeed a test, Ponyo will be allowed to live as a human, and the world order will be restored.

Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbour Totoro are my favourites. The former is hard to watch though.

That song was used in Japan in many promos, even for items not related to the music. I admit, it was catchy.

My Neighbor Totoro, (Laputa) Castle in the Sky, Castle of Cagliostro, and Princess Mononoke are my favorites, with Howl's Moving Castle being up there.

On another note, I didn't care much for Spirited Away. It was a good film, don't get me wrong, but I felt it a tad weaker when compared to some of Miyazaki's other works.

I seen Spirited Away, which was quite good. Freaky none the less.
Spirited Away was shoved in my face by my friend lol (Came out with the DVD to give to me O_O)

Grave of the Fireflies, watched it in Cantonese dub. Not bad film either, t'was sad.

I might watch Ponyo, seems good.

Studio Ghibli is so awesome, always making me shed a tear when I watch their films...
I want to watch Ponyo On The Cliff By The Sea! The story sounds similar to The Little Mermaid, don't you think Danny?

I agree about the Little Mermaid similarities, though I'd like to see it before I say more. Maybe it decentralizes the role of the "prince charming" during the test.

OMG Ponyo ponyo ponyo! So cute lol. I only saw Ponyo's character design, so I thought all the designs was completely different than Miyazaki's usual characters. I can't wait to watch this :D

My favourite have to be Kiki's Delivery Service, Totoro and Princess Mononoke. Whisper of the Heart is the other non-Miyazaki Ghibli movie that I really like.

I saw this a few days ago when I was in Kyoto. It's great, as you would expect, but also quite low-fi compared to recent Miyazaki films. The animation is pretty basic for the most part and backgrounds are simple water colour/pencil sketches.

The story too is quite a simple affair, pretty much like Totoro. Great movie though and I look forward to seeing it again when/if it releases on BD. Oh and for those who speak Japanese but not perfectly - see this film. The dialogue is really basic and easy to understand.

Favorite: Spirited Away, Mononoke, Gedo Senki (even if Ursula Le Guin's son said it sucked), Laputa, and Naussica.

Strong female lead for the win... Honestly, I would like to see an RR series that has a strong female lead, without it being ecchi, fan service, or harem... That's a wish I probably will not get...
