If you are looking for a decent recipe site for Japanese food then Open Source Food is probably what you are looking for - a place where you can find and upload your own recipes (for humans) of any kind and meet others who enjoy/make similar dishes. As for me, things I make well are... 1. Engrish tea. Making decent tasting tea in Japan with soft water is tough. I need PG tips from the UK though. 2. Hot water. This one is easy. 3. Ham and cucumber sandwich. Another easy one. 4. Hot milk. 4 mins in the microwave. 5. Instant ramen. Stick an egg in to make it taste better. I think that's about it ^^; Do you cook at all? If so what are your specialties? Nearly forgot to mention that Open Source Food is built by one of my comrades Yong Fook who does a load of groovy stuff in the web2.0 community with me in Tokyo - he recently made it to Time magazine with this recipe site.
Thx for the link, now I can get others to cook Japanese for me. As for myself, I'm pretty good with anything that has to be put in the microwave or with stuff where you just have to pour water on it. I can also do same basic cooking like rice or sausages but prefer to just help out in the kitchen (or watch TV while waiting for food).
hehe now i can force my gf to read up the link
Haha cup ramen is the best i can make... high five! Cooking is soo hard... especially when it comes to Japanese food... once i tried making sushi and it tasted so awful, it felt like an explosion of atomic proportions in my head. x(
Thank goodness for frozen foods and carryout!
I put an egg in my noodles too sometimes~ xD I make nice rice~ I fry the rice with diced carrots & onion, crushed garlic with cooking salt until a little golden, then I put it in a pot with boiled water, cover and leave for 10mins mmm~ xq~ Otherwise, pasta and spaghetti are easy enough (just salt and boiling water, lol), the dish generally depends on the sauce and the side. Salads I prefer to be simple, tomatoes with a bit of oil and salt, and the lettuce the same but with a tiny bit of apple vinegar as well :q Then of course, you have sandwiches, can soups, noodles and other quick and easy alternatives for something extra (or snack, hehe). Thanks for the link Danny, looks very useful =D Will refer to it when I feel like experimenting x3
Btw, the rice has to be on a low and even temperature when cooking, otherwise you burn the bottom and the top is left a bit raw ^^;;
I actually do know how to cook, but tend to eat out. Good at various stir fry or pasta dishes, but I'm probably best at grilling steak. Crap, now I'm hungry
lol. me didnt cook any fancy hot milk tonight - went out for sushi.
the only things that i can do there are the sandwich due to lack of ingredients and other whatnot lols..nonetheless thx for the link danny
Not to blow my own horn but I'm great cook ^^ My speciality is baking and pastries~ I think it started out when I was baking some simple cookies from a recipe book, my eyes caught sight of the french croissant recipthen I wanted to try it on my own. It never came out properly! But I didn't give up and on the the 5th attempt it came out all crispy yet soft~ My friends said if I ever dropped out of uni I could easily fall back on being a chef, I wonder what love and support feels like... >.> Oh, I also cook a mean steak and mexican fajitas~
Thanks for that! Ive been wondering how to do tonkatsu cutlets properly for a while now. Mine always come out burnt and sparsely sticking. Flour is the key! Ill also see how you make gyudon as well. I miss Yoshinoya! Im pretty rubbish at cooking, but i do some nice yakitori and a curry rice - providing the sauce is included!
ooh, looks useful! I'll be checking that to see if there's anything I'd be interested in making. I'm sure Danny can make a boiled egg well too!
Ah - nearly forgot! Spin the egg after boiling it for a while. The faster it spins, the harder it is on the inside.
Thanks for the link, Danny! Now I'll be able to make Japanese dishes with ease XD You probably cook more than others I've met, though. They're too lazy to even make their own coffee >__> I actually have more confidence in baking than cooking but, what I love making is probably chicken curry or Steak and Mashed Potatoes ^-^
Gonna bookmark this, could be useful. Danny you put me to shame, is that all you can cook? I'm not a chef meself, but I do make decent fried chicken, chili, and maybe beans and potatoes. But I do prefer to chuck a pizza in the oven though ^^
great, thanks. gonna bookmark it too. I actually bought a bilingual jap cook book in Tokyo. haven't tried anything for it YET! ^;^
ROFL... I'm a bachelor living alone, so you can imagine how many times a week I eat out. :P But I've tried several things. Thanks to a japanese rice cooker I bought, at least shiro-gohan is guaranteed. Only sad I sometimes have to eat it with furikaki alone. I leaned how to make beans (which is basic brazillian food), sometimes I get it right, sometimes it's too bland, sometimes too salty. Eggs, omelet and steak... sometimes I do them, but since it's kind of a bother (washing pan, dishes, oven and all), it's kind of a rare occurance. But I do like eating, and occasionally trying something different. Every now and then, when I try something different, I make a post in my blog: http://xspblog.com/category/food/ Last one was Gyoza (made a post here on DC too). Didn't make it, but I fried it... which is a lot considering how lazy and lost about cooking I am.
i started with instant noodles, moved on to hotdogs, then to eggs, moved on to cakes/pastries and now i make pasta/noodle and pasta/noodle dishes, various filipino foods, and the usual japanese foods(maki, tempura, tonkatsu, cold soba, etc
"Japanese Hutspot" WAT
I know how to cook and find it really isn't that difficult. What I like to do best is cook on the grill. Give me a beer and a grill and I'm happy for the day. Thanks for the link to that site. It's always nice to find new recipes for food.
Hey thanks for the link Danny. I'll certainly start using that xD I can cook abit. My specialities are Lasagna and Tuna / Clamchowder pasta. I can do quite good Indonesian fried rice too, but these days I'm quite bored of what i can cook and looking for new stuffs =D
Cooking is one of my favourite hobbies. :x I sometimes post recepies/prep-hints on my non-anime blog but I think there's only one or two there since the old db got burned up. I really should post them again -.- I'd say my specialty is pasta and meat preps, personally. Before I started my IT work, I did a long stint working hospitality for VIP types in a hotel, where I picked up most of my food hints. This website though, is pretty damn cool. Many good ideas.
Can't really cook, or never have tried it actually. Would love to know how to cook though (well I know the basics but nothing I would serve to guests), have to bookmark the site and give it a go some day. I just dislike washing the dishes after I'm done cooking ^^
same. i can cook things alright, but the cleanup is always a bother.
wow, my wife would love this site, thanks for sharing Danny!
whoops, about cooking, I'm not sure if it counts as cooking but people say I make really good ice cream. ^^
Wow thanks for the link! I've been learning how to cook out of interest, and it'll be nice to also cook some Japanese food. The only thing I don't like about cooking is the cleaning up though lol.
for me would be fried eggs with onions, simple poor student vegetable cooking. and steamed pork.
YEYYYY~! *gives danny-san a BIIIIG HUUUG* *u* me happy panda XD me can now test po-bunbun's cooking prowress (lol kung-fu panda not relations) I'm reaaaaally appreciating this since I want to try decent Japanese food and experimental ones without me killing myself finding the nearest Kombini for the ingredients :3 An undying "I LOVE YOU!" from meh hahaha! A friendly one ;)
Perhaps, you have heard of the store named "Konbini" here in our city of Manila?
Thanks for the link! Members that are able to read german should check out http://www.nekobento.com.Its a german Site about Japanese Food and especially about Bentos. My speciality? Pancakes! And the usual Stuff like InstantRamen,Spaghetti,Pizza ^^
Of course its http://www.nekobento.com forget about the Its XD
Danny Yet more thanks for the link. My japanese cooking has become rather repetitive. This site will shake things up for me.
I don't think I can eat the doggy one even if the fate of the world hung in the balance. XD I eat whatever I cook... which, while isn't a lot(fried rice, congee, and of course anything that can be microwaved or is instant) sometimes doesn't turn out the way like I envisioned... >_< ugh.
Only thing I can cook confidently are kimchi fried rice and ramen >_< Not much variety there.
Don't want to sound cliche, but I mainly eat pasta, burgers, pizza and soba... when I can get decent grade sushi fish I make sushi, but my nigiri always fall to pieces...
As the oldest child in my family, I have learned to cook reasonably well. And that has come very handy now when I'm away from home studying in an university.
lovely! I cook for me and hubs since we live on our own (before I cook some times of the week also), I like to use http://www.recipezaar.com/ I found a really yum japanese cheese cake recipe there ^^ Sometimes I just google :P I dunno if I have any specialty tho, gotta ask hubs ^^; I like baking too but now's too hot to bake and I am not very good at that ^^;
Ah, a most welcome site to post, Sir Danny. Will peruse as often as I can. A cook must never stop evolving, and that entails ripping-off someone else's recipes and calling it their own (indeed, there is no such thing as an "original" recipe. Someone else has done it before, knowingly or not). As for my specialties, people would say I whip up the most delectable Eggs Benedict. Indeed, many a female has swooned after a mere taste of my Hollandaise sauce, rich and decadent as it is. Oh bother, I had forgottten to turn on my humility.
For all you fellow gourmet and gourmand (and truly, there IS a difference between the two), I present to you a true jewel of a site among the vast expanse of the internet. Though it specializes in European cuisine, it is nonetheless insightful, and will surely add to your culinary knowledge to read it at least once. http://fxcuisine.com/ Hoard it, or share it, as you will, ladies and gentlemen.
My cooking skills come to: grab whatever i can from cupboard/fridge, then mix it all together and dry or shallow fry until slightly cooked. Then eat, then regret it.
Thanks. Now I can maybe cook something not so American XD
That doggy one looks really interesting! XD
ty4 link off 2 cook
I make my own vegetarian sushi cuz I'm a vegetarian. Make some udon dishes too but nothing too special or complex. What I'd like to do is find a good supplier of Mochiko online that you don't have to buy in huge bulk orders so I can try making different kinds of dango. And I'm eying up a taiyaki mold and some azuki beans. Cooking good food is fun.
My wife gave me this link last year. It's pretty popular I heard. There are some great recipes. IIRC, the website creator is both a programmer and chef?
Did you know...? I'm a pro at cooking rice! XD 1. Wash rice 2. Add water 3. Put the rice and water into the cooker 4. Flip switch down to turn on the cooker 5. Burn time by going online to attempt to keep up with all the members' news these days
My katsudon and chahan are pretty good ;p. I can make a ton of other stuff, but they're according to restaurant menu, hehe.
the only thing i can make is rice, egges (sunny side up or omlets), and cup ramen =p...
i don't cook. wish i did. i tried several times but they mere mediocre. lurve food though.
man all this food talk made me drool and now i'm very hungry :( I think i'm turning into a foodie. everytime i see food or read about food i want to eat orz
Yay~ I can all those five too! My specialty is deep frying fries and chicken nuggets LOL
Wow! Now my mom cook more Japanese food other than tempura and sukiyaki! I myself only know how to cook one dish... pesto pasta XD
Open Source Food - nice name. I do know how to cook some basic chinese food. too complicated 1 i pass.
I cook every now and then. I commonly cook pasta/w some sort of tomato sauce, or maybe chicken stir fry. Basically, once I get the recipe down I can cook it.
I can make some Shanghainese versions of and specialties like vegetarian crab, Shanghainese springrolls, dumplings, 粉蒸肉, 紅燒肉, 獅子頭.. well that and some more, but usually only for special occasions. Mostly make food depending on what I have (what is on sale) and usually just stir fry or steam or turn into soup.
Ahh, Now I can learn to cook some japanese food!
i can cook if i take the time to find a recipe and go grocery shopping... unfortunately that doesn't tend to happen very often ^^; i do try to make japanese curry about once a month or so... can't get enuf of it ^_^
