Murakami Figure

Murakami Figure
Whats the most money you would pay for a figure?
How about 15.2 million USD for a figure of a young lad waxing his dolphin?
These figures were created by designer Takeshi Murakami and were sold off at a recent auction. Not sure how much the milk cannon girl fetched. Nearly forgot to mention they are 1/1 scale.

Danny-san, don't forget to mention they're "life-sized". That, plus they're sculptures. Kinda justifies the price...

However............... The theme......

OMG, I worship Takeshi Murakami. I would pay ridiculous sums of money to have an OoAk Murakami original in my house, although I don't think I'd ever see that much money in my life time...

As a girl, I would totally go for the young lad with the energetic dolphin. It would sort of freak me out at first, and depending on the proportions of this life-sized figure either I would get a complex from having a life-size model so skinny or my husband would develop a complex on how genki his dolphin is...

I would want a typical-sized figure were they to be made. It's just hilarious, but as for unwanted witnesses, I guess that's a fun problem to solve as a result.

Well, everyone has different tastes in art (I don't quite like this, and I don't quite like abstract art...)

It is a very great piece though. He's made a life sized figure, with the paint job and finish, it looks just like a miniature figure. The girl also embodies the 'typical' anime girl, with the large chest, vibrant hair color, and ridiculously beautiful figure. Not much to say about the guy except for he has big hair...

Danny, I have to give you props for posting this. When I found the NY Magazine article (http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2008/05/takashi_murakami_watches_from.html) referencing that a few days ago I had to think long and hard before deciding that I didn't want a picture of a "boy waving an ejaculate lasso" on my front page. Worth mentioning that these figures (or sculptures) are considered pieces of art, and they are already kinda old.

Murakami's work is known worldwide and are on a kinda different level than other regular artists, with his work being classified more as pop subculture than anime related.

I saw it on this book called Superflat (Amazon has it) among with many other japanese artists that has many works that are also classified as pop subculture rather than anime related, despite having the same characteristics.

Much like Yoshitomo Nara.

Still, the price it reached shure is incredible...

Looks like you're preaching to the wrong crowd, and I suppose I'm not learning from your mistake, heh, but anyways, here's my interpretation it.

Almost all of you are completely missing the point. Disgusted? That's because the _statues_ are embodiments of a criticism against the shallowness of anime, manga, and otaku culture in general. They only extend the already greatly exaggerated portrayal of sexuality in otaku culture -- I'm sure if you have come across H-manga and H-doujins before, you have most likely already encountered large breasts and ejaculations of... great volumes, and even if not, you have surely come across fan service anime, ecchi manga, and trashy figures (they're all over this site, duh) featuring similarly styled characters. And yet. by distorting that only a little, Murakami creates a slightly disturbing image that questions otaku culture and sexuality. The epiphany comes when you realize how little Murakami deviates from the standard quo, but by actualizing the sexual ideals printed on paper in life-sized sculptures, he captures the hint of deep perverseness in otaku, which is proven when each of you shuddered in disgust -- they are the unsightly reflections of anime, manga, and otaku culture that you all envy so much, a materialistic and hyper-sexualized culture, a fact none of you can deny (yes, I realize just about everything in media is materialistic and sexualized these days, don't bother bringing that up, as it still doesn't change the argument at hand).

There is damn good reason why the sculptures are valued at an amount greater than what most of you would make in your entire lives. This page is testament to the provoking nature of Murakami's art. Of course, I'm not asking you to LIKE the sculptures, but it seems almost none of you are giving them the few moments of thought they deserve.

...and I'm spent, God, talking about not learning from another's mistakes.
