I remember having a poster similar to this Shinjuku one back when I was a student in the UK. I used stare at it every day which kept me focused on doing things that I needed to do reach my destination (whats a destination?) of living and working in Japan. I read that earlier today. Great guide, though ive been 4 times and am already fairly used to going there. Excellent wallpaper too - thats going on my laptop! Love the glow effect off the buildings in the low clouds.

adding to the fifth comment: If you are exclusively using a JR line, might as well buy a JR Rail Pass, which gives you about ten days usage of JR Lines, buses, and water bus. You can even use it on the Shinkansen... Just not he express one (NOzomi...) adding to the sixth comment: I don't think that's enough... concuring with nine

What a coincidence. My town is doing a student exchange for our sister city in Japan (it's over 100 miles from Tokyo, though) & if I get chosen (interviews are next week), I'll be in Japan from the 1st till the 12th.

It is a good list, but sometimes people over prepare. Japan has everything all other countries have for the most part except clothes that fit big dudes. I think it is better to use common sense and find out more about the environment you are going. Different cities in Japan require different survival techniques.
