Many companies showed off their latest display and LCD technology at the Display Expo recently held at Tokyo Big Sight. The most exciting thing were the digital paper products. This 3.5inch display is 0.2 mm thick. This means that we can look at 2D girls all day long anywhere and everywhere - just stick the display in your textbook or even your underpants without feeling (too) unconformable. HOLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O+_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O THAT THING IS THIIIIIIIIIIIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if it was really cheap and really large. . hell i would buy one <.<
it may not be huge and cheap right now, but the turn over rates for technology is amazing, expect something like that to be common affordable technology sometime in the next 10 years.
10 years is quite long... I guess newer technology standards will be introduced in that time frame replacing this one. Its a never ending cycle.
About 10 years from now, Full HD LCD and plasma TV may be like normal CRT TV to us then? ^^ That's really exciting, I wonder what kind of TV technology can totally pawn LCD and plasma.
Plasma HD LCD TVs with built in blue-ray reader and satellite adapter?
Before you know it, the next 10 years would have screens made from holograms XD I still can't believe technology is advancing at such a rate...
It benefits us as the consumers, but at the same time will leave us with a very dry wallet.
After that holographic screens will be next, obliterating the need for physical screens. Then next the matrix... And...
Amazing. That's the only way I can describe it.
My thoughts exactly. I just went "Holy hell" too.
Wow!! That is indeed super thin O_O; I like the idea of putting it inside your textbook :p
Holy Sh**!!!!!!!! Now that is thin... Wonder, when would they come out with a computer like that. What's next, holograms instead of a TV screen...
no no no, you cant put in your underpants..its so thin it might be sharp enuf to cut off *something* there but its indeed cool-some is it selling yet? how much?
ouch. paper cut down there sounds real painful. ^^;
wow paper thin LCD!!! would love to actually see one of these. soon we can glue in home movies into our old photo albums. ^^
This is amazing, I didn't realise that the technology now can create something like that! Can't wait for newspapers with moving pictures!
this is proof that God loves us. id buy like 8 of them for each class
Moore's law never ceases to amaze me
been heard of this information for looog time~ never felt impressed until i see this!
Amazing. This brings the whole digital-paper technology another step closer. Now just to wait for the higher resolutions
Is that one of the thin screens that's flexible too? Those things are soo kool. Can't wait for a screen for something the size of a DC or something that you can just unfold into a laptop size screen!
omg, that was really very thin >.<".
excellent! glad to see that this technology is coming along nicely.. for those of you who have seen it.. the old..ish tv series earth final conflect had a cell phone with a fold out screen.. say 5 by 5inch .. now that i seee this.. it looks liek a real posibility.. gotta love the future!
Wow!! Thats totally awesome.. I wonder what the people will invent next.. ^^
Sweet, that could easily be used as a wallpaper for the room, changing moe 2D girls pictures every few minutes.
i like...wonder how much does it cost
LCD screens that thin?? I thought that this is only achievable by using OLED technology since LCD requires backlighting of some sort It will be amazing if it really takes off but will definitely cost an arm an a leg to get a small screen like that.. Guess there wont be any use of newspapers in the future with this LCD paper thing
So thin.....If they were to use that to make ultraportable laptop....
SHI~! THAT'S PAPER THIN O.O imagine the laptops and desktops that would have that kind of screen ^____^ let's all hope that it won't be astronomically expensive lolz
That's awesome. I would like to see it for myself, and I want one.
I'm all for super thin, but more than that, I would like to see a decent sized OLED display which won't cost more than the whole of Dannys Figure collection! Stuck with a 22" LCD display at the moment. while it's good enough, the future can't come quickly enough.
WTF that is THIN!!!
Yah, yah. I'll only be impressed when they make one that rolls into a tube, or one that floats in front of you while you walk. ; )
I think there is already one which can be folded and bent though it is only monochromic. Its called e-paper or something of that sort.
we'd probably find this in future iterations of the MacBook Air, making it even thinner than it already is
They were showing a prototype of this last year. It was on YouTube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lILJdYoxuGE it was flexible and it was damn cool then... it's still damn cool now - especially now that it is cleaned up with less wires. I imagine people will have visuals in their clothes and on cars and such. Jut slap it on and go.
omg that is just too COOL! O_O hope they'll do something about the wire sticking out at the back like that tho XD
"stick it in underpants"? won't that be hot from all the heat? bad for the dolphin. ('~')
I watched a video a while back where they bent some of this stuff around a pop can and it was still able to display with no issues. I can't wait to see this kind of stuff put into a very simple (ie: very thin and silent) notepad type thing. Where all you can do is write on it, view previously written stuff, then upload it to your computer later. It will basically remove my entire need for paper once it becomes just as convenient to use a tablet for writing as a scrap of paper.
BRICKSHITTING TIME! That screen is as thin a piece of paper... production costs for this thing must be astronomical. But I can see the usefulness in replacing the newspaper somewhere in the future.
I wonder if they used OLEDs in this product.
Very nice! I see the broken promises of OLCD miracles are becoming... unbroken. Maybe next, we'll have a bigger screen, as thin as that, and also: transparent. Anyways, glad to know that things like loosing your TV instead of the remote will happen on my lifetime still...
This reminds me very much of OLED, awesome stuff id really want one of those instead of a HD tv.
Why Danny... Always invoke technology and ero purposes? LOL So they finally did it?! I just thought those would remain in the land of scientific fantasy, but they succeeded! Wow, I'm rather impressed.
The size is nice, but I think people are neglecting to see the piece that goes underneath (what seems to be holding up the display). That's some sort of band, seems similar to something you'd find on a motherboard or something. I dunno, not that great with computers, but what I'm pointing out is that there seems to be an external component. So it's not exactly paper thing from what I'm guessing...
Holy cow!!!!! Is it water proof? If yes then I'll use it as wallpaper in my bathroom. =D Just wondering what resolution it has.
I saw this over at engadget the other day or last night I think and was really impressed. Sooner or later me just might have those kind of newspapers they have in harry potter's world. ^^ Now that would really make me read the papers. heheh
Oh dear lord, I can think of a thousand uses for that thing if it were larger.
Holographic TVs kinda already exists. The problem is that the quality is pretty far from being competitive to current TVs. More of a novelty than anything.
I would place that in the bible or my textbook and the priest or teacher would look at me when I seem like in a trance by the images!
So thin that is Mac Book Air sized. DO want it to larger.
Woot! so thin! Technology is really rising, next thing u know is to stay home while a robot work in your place at work.
i'm going to be showing the world some Idols on my stomach when i go walking around :P
is it 1080P?
wow... now thats really thin... can't see me using that though seeing as how rough i am... might break it the moment i hold it...
