Japan Display Expo

Japan Display Expo
Many companies showed off their latest display and LCD technology at the Display Expo recently held at Tokyo Big Sight.
The most exciting thing were the digital paper products.
This 3.5inch display is 0.2 mm thick. This means that we can look at 2D girls all day long anywhere and everywhere - just stick the display in your textbook or even your underpants without feeling (too) unconformable.
More pics at Impress.

it may not be huge and cheap right now, but the turn over rates for technology is amazing, expect something like that to be common affordable technology sometime in the next 10 years.

10 years is quite long...
I guess newer technology standards will be introduced in that time frame replacing this one.

Its a never ending cycle.

About 10 years from now, Full HD LCD and plasma TV may be like normal CRT TV to us then? ^^

That's really exciting, I wonder what kind of TV technology can totally pawn LCD and plasma.

LCD screens that thin?? I thought that this is only achievable by using OLED technology since LCD requires backlighting of some sort

It will be amazing if it really takes off but will definitely cost an arm an a leg to get a small screen like that.. Guess there wont be any use of newspapers in the future with this LCD paper thing

They were showing a prototype of this last year. It was on YouTube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lILJdYoxuGE it was flexible and it was damn cool then... it's still damn cool now - especially now that it is cleaned up with less wires.

I imagine people will have visuals in their clothes and on cars and such. Jut slap it on and go.

I watched a video a while back where they bent some of this stuff around a pop can and it was still able to display with no issues.

I can't wait to see this kind of stuff put into a very simple (ie: very thin and silent) notepad type thing. Where all you can do is write on it, view previously written stuff, then upload it to your computer later. It will basically remove my entire need for paper once it becomes just as convenient to use a tablet for writing as a scrap of paper.

The size is nice, but I think people are neglecting to see the piece that goes underneath (what seems to be holding up the display). That's some sort of band, seems similar to something you'd find on a motherboard or something. I dunno, not that great with computers, but what I'm pointing out is that there seems to be an external component. So it's not exactly paper thing from what I'm guessing...
