I want that Fujiko fig! UFO catchers here sucks. Only cheap stuff toys that might be there for months and worthless other crap.

From the looks of the setup, getting the figure looks easy but getting it without scratching after falling is hard. It looks like a long fall.

Nothing. Just run of the mill generic stuffed animals. When I was in Japan in 2000 though, I played an 'adult' one on a dare from a bunch of my friends and I won a woman's pair of underwear in a capsule. Charming stuff!

Usually worthless stuff is inside the claw games. Sometimes they have some more interesting things against the walls, but you can't even get them, so what's the point besides temptation to grab hold of a watch or stuffed animal?

I grinned when looking at the box... Looks like the packaging for chocolates or perfume.
But more seriously, in the case there (apparently) are such good (and costly) prizes in a mere UFO catcher, there is definitely something fishy going on. Either the participation price is high enough for your eyes (guess which pair and no, I'm not talking about those oppai balls -damn, that sounded so weird. Ahem-) to pop out and roll on the floor after a few tries or that the failure rate is great... Or even both if the UFO catcher's owner is sadistic enough.
And I'm not even evoking the case of a pure scam, with Q-Joy figures (example may vary with your idea of worst nightmare) instead of the beautiful ones you always dreamed about.
Or am I simply too paranoid to be true.

I can attest to that. The 'biggest' types of prizes I've seen hanging from the crane games around here are bargain-priced cellphones.

I agree that if ever a crane game had PVC figures or something of similar value as prizes, either a game would cost a tad more than your pocket change could cover, or the game itself was deathly hard.

I've always wondered if those figures known as Sega "Prize" figures were meant to be distributed as actual prizes in UFO catchers. If so, then they're actually very nice prizes. I bought a pair of such PVCs for Ghost in the Shell at a local import shop expecting the worst, but not so.

UFO-Catcher machines are known as "crane games" around these parts. The most common one I see is called "Candy Crane" where you get a handful of candy out of it (usually a very small handful since the crane pincers are so loose they tend to drop a lot of your loot before it makes it to the drop chute (what a rip off).

we have a similar machine like ufo catcher here, but no catcher or arms to play with. it's like a juke box or vending machine. a small light will start moving randomly around some cheap stuffs in the machine, you hit the button when the light passes over the item you want. chances of getting what you want is usually 0.1 out of 10. mostly the items are key chains, mechanical pencils and fake kiddy watches. the most prized item i've ever saw is a mini calculator. you need to use the tip of the pen to press the number tabs. some tips if you manage to play the ufo catcher, when there is nobody looking, tag team with your friends, shake the machine until something drops down into the collection pocket at the bottom :)

nothing else is ever placed it those dang machines except the occasional pig stuff toys that are mainly catered towards the girls who somehow against all possible odds can never get seem to get those freakin toys, and its up to their boyfriends to get it for them...
the guys however will mostly seem to be able to get those toys...
i sense a very evil and devious conspiracy goin on here...

I import quite a lot of ufo catcher prizes and I personally think the quality is very very good for the cost of the items. Sega, Taito and Banpresto are my favourite companies, I would say they consistently release good quality items.

I would imagine that it would be very difficult to actually WIN something from an actual ufo catcher machine though ;)

I used to live in the UK and never ever saw any decent prizes in crane games, just stuffed animals generally. Here in Canada the situation is pretty much the same. Maybe one day we will get the quality that Japan gets, not holding out hope though.
