I get many mails worrying about and asking me how should one get by in Japan for a trip without Japanese speaking skills. just like any other country, you don't have to learn the whole language before you go but picking up a few words is always nice like "oppai." For those who are still worried need not worry any longer - that is if you plan to go to a maid cafe as the famous @home cafe in Akiba now has a gaijin maid. Some of the @home maids in action below. Via Alafista.
good thing im learning japanese. Just the Kanji symbols are a force to reckon with...
Very true, that.. I'm also learning Japanese and, yes, Kana is not so powerful a force as Kanji. >_<
Same for me as well. Kanji is difficult to master. You know it's tough when the Japanese tell you they have problem as well.
It's tough for them because they use retarded methods of learning them. They should just adopt the Heisig method and be done with it.
I have trouble as well. My parents used to make me memorize and write over and over again 10 kanji characters a week. They even sent me to Japanese school to improve my writing. D: Helped a little. So i guess i'm gaijin on the inside.
Well, I still prefer nihonjin wearing maid costumes. Maids aren't my favorite type but, if is a maid, must be a japanese!
Sure is good they have a gaijin in a thing like this, so Japan-style cafe, but the only thing is, well, they can choose a girl, you know, more, or least... Sure you know I mean... Return to the abism!!
oh wow... id rather take the Japanese maid >.>
Yeah I will choose the Japanese maid too over the other, I dunno but hey could have picked a more moe foreigner?? No offence to anyone here ^^;
she looks like a school librarian.
I guess learning to speak will suffice when speaking with the medio at the cafes. But its good to have a foreigner working at the maid cafe, so as to handle non-japanese speaking tourist. I do wonder if she will speak in a moe voice to the customers in english???
I'm betting she's actually there to cater to gaijin adoring nihonjin otaku (as I don't think too many gaijin males would be all that interested in such a *ahem* futsu girl. like, seriously, she's the best one they could find? she better have an amazing personality)
nihonjin maiddo please :P their outfits are sooooo cute!
Okay, I don't mean to be mean, but... okay, I do: Looks like they hired gaijin maido for translator purposes, and not moe-ness.
@FatB, I agree with you. Shes.. different.
I agree as well :0
You know, since many of us grew up around "gaijin" girls, we have different standards of beauty when looking at non-Japanese girls. To be perfectly honest, as someone who grew up around asians, there are less than a few maids in the vid I find attractive at all.
*Crazy caption time!* "If you touch my belly, you'll get a free slap!" Not interested, thank you.
I would say... Forget the touch. I will slap you.
Action first, talk later. ^^
crazy caption v2.0 Maid: I'm pregnant, would i still be moe? Guy: orz
^o^
I wanted to avoid the pregnant part, but you interpreted it in a nice way. ^^
No Moe = No Go
Hmmm. No thank you. I have way more than enough interaction with white people in my own country; even when looking in the mirror. One of the reasons I love Japan is having the opportunity to get away from them/us. I will just continue to increase my language skills. Nihongo ga benkyo o shimasu!
That song just made my day. 8D
Yeah, the music is very nice.. Further having a "++" when the girls in maid costume sang the song..
Yes and the "mune kyun" (sorry don't have Japanese program on my laptop) is probably very moe to some... as long as no one translates that song to English. xD
I find the gaijin's beauty not translating well into a maid outfit. It's not bad, but not preferable, either. Curious question, though. Doubt anyone knows. Would she be the first ever gaijin to be hired at a maid cafe?
Haha, she really looks like a maid from the old times >.<.
In Lucky Star, seems like gaijin maid isn't unusual anymore, like Patricia Martin. ^^
I prefer Patty a lot better~~ xD
Maids in Akiba need to be Japanese !
gaijin meido ain't so bad. as long as she got a good japanese accent and isn't trying too hard to fake it its alright w/ me.
I'm sure that white girls would be cute as a maid...but that one...not so much.
Damn she's ugly lol. I may be fatter than her, but at least I am cuter sheesh.
Btw. seems like they order their maids in descending order depending on their beauty. Does this mean that you get to pay more to get the companion of the maid on the top of the list..? She's the cutest one too.. >_< http://www.cafe-athome.com/maids/
Where is the white one? She should be in her own cage, ugh.
this is as wrong as the ganguro...
Yes Danny, the first thing I'll shout will be "Oppai!". I'm still learning the language, in a lazy way. I know many random things and sentence structures, but I don't have time to learn more or even have any textbooks or sites to learn from.
I'll refrain from commenting this time. :X
That's @home's hitomi-chan while the gaijin meido looks a hell lot like Carlton Ardith who was featured in the Foreign King of Akiba TV Championship. Hope I'm wrong about the latter.
gaijin meido looks to be in serious need of nourishments.
Nay, I'd rather learn the language whole.
Not bad I guess...
Mune Mune kyun kyun...what does kyun kyun means? if it's not that impt, i rather concentrate on mune...Mune.... =3~
hmm, i did abit googling about and found that mune-kyun means naive and youthful... can anyone verify??
I prefer to learn most of the language than have some basic ones.. I manages to find one website that provide such training for free.. http://www.japanese-online.com/ Does anyone know of other websites providing such training..
you could try http://www.realkana.com to practice Hiragana and Katankana. for Kanji, try http://www.realkanji.com
ah... that gaijin maid looks like guy... Maid Guy??
I first was worried how I could do in Japan without fully speaking Japanese, until I actually went to Japan to realize that I was worrying too much. I do not speak fluent Japanese, yet I do have decent Japanese accent and can speak basic Japanese such as asking direction and such. If you take Japanese 1 course in college or something equivalent, I think you are pretty much set. If your main interest is Akihabara and sort, some stores there have English speaking workers or they will try to help you as much as they can. Grab an Tokyo metro train map in English from airport and you can pretty much travel much of famous spots in Tokyo such as Shinjuku, Shibuya, Akihabara and more. You won't get all these on first try but don't get scared even before you go to Japan. Take heart and once you arrive in Japan, you will see that Japan is not as scary place as you would think once you get used to it ^^;
hm, methinks this is just to appeal to otaku with a gaijin fetish, rather than to make it more accessible to gaijin visitors! When i went to the @ home cafe, a very cute japanese maid served us who could speak chinese, korean, english and japanese!
i'd netter not say anything for this...
Would the Japanese appriciate a tall blonde maid? When I go to Japan it would be fun to try lol. And if I tried living there it might be an easy job to get if they do want tall blonde maids lol.
nahh no problem right now im learning japanese but th kanji o_O bleh son muy frustrantes
I take the Japanese maid. Kanji is pretty difficult to learn, so I have to study it often.
I wish I could learn good Japanese but I already know English Spanish and French so my memory is clogged with laguages and it is hard to learn a fourth language! ^^ I know a few words though like hi and what not.
Been learning the language for almost 4 years soon, and yeah Kanji is a pain. Though, there is a few good techniques to make it easier.
If you think Japanese is tough it will be.....As for gaijin meido, I'm going to that spot fo sho!
And only now do I read this... on the evening of my last day in Japan... Oh well, did go to Cafe with Cat again though ^^ but would have liked to try others. Will be back next year though ^^ (with hopefully a little bit more fluency again in the japanese language by then)
Although I must say, I like the japanese girl more... (a lot more...) The other one doesn't seem... natural. If you know what I mean ^^;
Where is she from anyway?
That is cool. Now you feel more at home. Helps to break the communcation barriar for American-Otaku
no offense but the gaijin meido in the picture is not moe >.>
