If you ever drop something while in Tokyo, before you go to ask the police, you may want to have a look at the local bill boards.
These boards are called "Keijiban" [掲示板[けいじばん]] and are used to post information about local events such as fairs, roadworks etc. You may also find your missing belongings on the board as people would pin it there.
And if you have not read it yet, read how I got my mobile phone back after leaving it on a train.

Hey! Neat piece of advice! One year so far and I still never know what's around my place. I will look for it to see what it says!

That's great, they even put someone's keys up there. IDK, I'd rather they just turned my stuff into the police.

Yeah, unless the police is actually complicating the matter (asking for proof and whatnot), then that's a better choice. ^^

Yeah, unless the police is actually complicating the matter (asking for proof and whatnot, like Danny's experience with wallet ^^), then that's a better choice.

Lol, well 90% of the time I get my stuff back. The only thing I didn't was my old Gameboy, my airport KLM kit when I was younger, and my led light thats like a laser pointer that tells time.
Ottawa is decent with lost items but not trustworthy in the area I live in. Japan sure is a strange nut to crack when trying to understand them 100%. Damn if only I could go to Japan blah.

This is one of the things in Japan, that doesn't seem to exist anywhere else on earth. I wish we had similiar things in Sweden.

It's always nice to find free stuff when you feel you're never rewarded with life. But again, what is the past of the item? What are the feelings of the one who lost it?
Many things that modern societies teach us not to care about... So sad.

I left my mobile phone at the beach years ago, when I noticed it I called it over and over again but no one asnwered for about 2 hours. I trief it once again and some smaller kids answered that they had found the phone on a location I haven't been on that day. Fortunately they gave it back to me and there were some strange photos on it, someone made them and threw it away again after that o_O

It's because of stuff like that I want to live in Japan...
If something like that was made here in Brazil, not only it would never have lost stuff there (because if you loose just about anything, it's not yours anymore, save extremely rare exceptions) but also, by the end of the first day that board would probably be filled with sex-related advertising (read prostitutes), completely sprayed with gang stuff, missing some piece... or maybe the whole board, to say the least.

I think best thing to do is not to lose anything in the first place but accidents can happen. Whenever I carry bunch of stuffs and ride the train, I make sure I don't leave anything behind when I get off.
