Im quite worried about whats happening at Akihabaraof late. Remember Ms Wide Open?
Well because of that incident, there are more police patrolling the area meaning that more cosplayers are being sent away as soon as they are spotted.
To make things worse, recently some boys dressed up as girls have been firing airguns in the area - shooting pellets at each other.
Jabro has more photos of the incident and how one of these gunners tried to hide their airgun under a vending machine when caught by the police.
If weired stuff like this continues to happen, the police may decide to ban cosplaying from the area....

Ms.Wide Open has been in Akihabara more than once actuly... The police have taken her more than once, but she keeps coming back.
Also, what's wrong with cosplaying? As long as it don't turn out to be a strip show/to healthy for your dolphin.

I see the police stop cosplayers all the time. cosplayers get an excuse if they carry something looking like a weapon as they can say "well shana had a sword!" for example.

hmmmm wonder if there are any cosplayers that got arrested for wielding a real weapon in the streats ._. but i have to agree that you have to be arrested when firing airguns randomly

Okay, I have no idea how they get away with shooting airsoft guns in public. Around these parts paintball is slightly higher on the popularity scale but I can assure you it's strictly controlled (gear must be secured until you enter an authorized area like an arena or a scenario field). You'd get arrested for assembling your stuff outside any of these places.

I remember walking down Akiba with Hirito and his cousin back in January this year watching the people cosplaying on the streets. We were watching this girl singing when suddenly someone shouted and everyone who was cosplaying/performing just ran away in all directions.
We stood there dumbstruck wondering what happened until we saw a policeman walk down the road a few minutes later. That was really an interesting experience for us.

Akihabara should be thankful they these incedents were only a rude girl and some airsoft guns. In the US we see real guns being flashed and sometimes shot on the streets. People here get mugged about once per week in the campus I work on...usually there are guns involved.
BTW in the US those kids with Airsoft would have been shot dead too. Cops here don't have a lot of tolerance for that crap. My cousin (a cop) and 4 other cops unloaded on a guy for pointing an Airsoft at them. Killed him on the spot.

Give 'em a bit of freedom, they'll do whatever they want. Take it away, and they'll still look for ways to do what they want. You can ban cosplaying from Akhibara, and there's sure to be trouble. Moderation is what's needed, but people usually tend to go for one side of the scale before there's any balancing to be done.

I love Akiba and it's happenings, but if things are to go that way, I think it's better for Akiba to go back to being a place with electronics and anime-related shopping only.
But I knew things would go down that way since the first post about Ms Wide Open.
It's nice that Akiba is becoming a place to be more liberal, and get away from japanese rigid standards... but some people are crossing the line.
In places like Harajuku people can be different while still respecting the law and order.. Akiba shouldn't be different.
Public spaces are not for people like Ms Wide Open, or airsoft battles. There are more appropriate places for that.

Ms Wide Open should go to Kabukicho, she could earn some money there with her stunt. I don't really approve of the airsoft gun battles either. They may not bother people, but wait until a kid walks into one of there pellets with his eye... Journalists are going to be screaming, and we'd get body searches when you get off Akiba station...
And IF they're going to ban cosplay, they should give a license for cosplay, that for example maids can still hand out their flyers, which is their bread to get people to come to their maid cafe.
And once you've broken the rules, your license is revoked. But I hope it doesn't come to that, I really hope...

At least there aren't any chavs or yobs in hoodies roming the streets. Police wouldn't be able to handle them probably. Walking round like they're the most important thing in the universe, getting drunk and making babies whilst underage and kicking someone to death if they are looked at or ganging around a good person's house.
I think the police should be a bit more tolerant towards cosplayers, who only want to express themselves and not cause a fuss.

That picture and the title gave the first impression of a riot in Akihabara
*shrugs* Even in Japan, such mindless insanity, once thought unique only to the rest of the world, exists. They'd best be careful when playing with those pellets; It's gonna hurt real bad if it gets put in the eye; then someone will complain, then the Akihabara police force will deploy a Knightpolice unit(or other law enforcement m3chaz, I'm not fussy regarding that) AND that'd be the true end.
Holding guns in Singapore is VERY illegal. With the exception of cheap children toys you find in shops, live ammunition guns, airsoft guns, all are "X" BANNED. If any idiot raises up any of the above banned stuff in an international movement area like the airport, I can give you a 75% guarantee the SWAT patroling the area will hole him with a burst first, especially with an escaped terrorist running round the island nowadays.
Forgive me if it's a bit long.
You can't discharge airsoft projectiles in public unless there's a game going on and the venue is somewhere safe from public. This is really an irresponsible act and it saddens me that it tarnishes Akihabara's reputation.

What I think is most likely is a crackdown to stop Ms Wide Open & other such troublemakers and then a slow (unannounced) relaxation so that normal cosplayers would be tolerated. I cant see cosplay being "banned" as it helps to draw so many people. Why else would so many people go there on a Sunday.

Ban cosplay from Akiba, it's like taking away the heart from a human being, sad. Though, as long as all shops are there I'm pretty much fine. Figures and games > cosplayers. But, cosplayers are a nice feature to Akiba, it makes the place " breathe " more.
