Me in the video below on Blog TV a while ago. The guy with the hat asks me what sort of image does "otaku" have outside of Japan and goes on to say that the word "otaku" usually conjures up images of what you see in the image above. What sort of image goes through your head when you hear the work "otaku"? Image via Byonavi.
OMG Danny! From your caption, I thought you were in that thumbnail. Don't do that! *afraid to click*
I thought the exact same thing >.> You're not that bad are you Danny?
i saw the video below the picture and relieved danny looked way better than the picture up there...
LOL me too o_o;

Me 4! My eyes went wide open when I read it.
Me 5.. Now I can let out a great sigh of relieve..

ill get your back to, already have the gun ready ^.^ (were cousins so dont be scared were trained professionals at killing each other)
I generally think there's some perversion involved when i hear the word Otaku.
I feel the same also :) Personally I really dislike the word
I know term otaku is an insult in Japan but I think in USA, it's more of a general term to describe people that watch anime, play videogames, read manga and what not. That's what comes to my mind when I hear the word otaku or use it.
Likewise, though it often additionally carries some of the pejorative connotation even in the States.
Wow, I didn't know danny's armour cost 300,000... Kinda squeaky eh? Is it due to the mic's sensitive pick-up or is it really loud? O.o Another qn, they keep saying otaku-bon... what that means huh?
i think this picture could describe otakus as a group of people who live their passion of anime manga and all other related stuff. http://bp3.blogger.com/_fipaxpLsZPw/R-ZhJIPH7oI/AAAAAAAAAio/o1BVo_lywiM/s1600-h/DSC_0046+044.JPG
Damn goggles! They still do nothing! @__@ Unfortunately I get the same image Japanese would get when I think of the word otaku. A NEET/Hikokomori-ish person who has nothing else in his life, western-otaku image is much more healthy... ish.
Wow, these guys are pretty hardcore... Wish I don't end up as hardcore-looking as that. (no offence lol)
The ONLY word to describe the people in the picture would be the word "hardcore". The word otaku, when used in another country, covers almost all the anime-lovers in it. Nothing like those in the image.
the girl's ears are huge o.O;
Arg, my eyes, it hurts! Generally, when I think of otaku, I DONT think about things like those in the picture, but maybe I'll have to now that it was burnt into my brain....
The term 'otaku' here (in my country) is used to describe normal anime/manga/etc. lovers. so basically, if you love anime, you can be considered as otaku. well, eventhough the otaku here isn't as worrying as in Japan, we're also considered as nerd and childish (anime here is viewed as child shows).
Well, I didn't look at the picture, knowing that something was wrong... Guys, the day Danny wears a sake maker underwear outfit (?), poses in front of a multitude of weird guys and has a photo of it but also shows it to everyone to see, it definitely will be the end of the world... Otaku... A term that will never describe me, as I feel it is reserved to anime fans that make it their central interest, to the point they beat anyone else at specialized trivia, have seen hundreds and thousands of series (and remember everything about them) and bought a mountain of trinkets and figurines/games to a critical point... The downpoint to that would be that they would have sacrificed a lot of opportunities in life. I am not saying they are secluded beings or obsessed/addicted souls (among others), but the feelings can be close.
This was the negative definition of an otaku... The one I feel closer to (and would say is more real) is that it is about people that show passion for their hobby, with the latter still being misunderstood by societies. Yes, people, I kinda lied above. The ones that are described there (and they do exist) are the extreme cases that generally have reached the non-return point (just like if they were addicts).
Yea, I remember my friend once said that Otaku is actually general. There are car otaku, train otaku, etc...
this that what the japanese media think of otakus? O.o isn't that too stereotypical?
Hmm, I find that in Canada there's at least as many female 'otaku' as males (judging by the people going to anime conventions, also by the fact that at my high school, the girls in the anime club outnumbered the guys about 5:1) so I don't really think of that when I think of otaku. But that's all asuming the North American definition of the word, which is basically 'anime/manga/etc fan'
When I think OTAKU, anime,manga and eroge comes to mind... Yea, eroge...
densha otoko
is that wong jing in the sumo outfit?
What sumo outfit? If you mean the naked guy in the picture, then he's not wearing a sumo thong. He's wearing an apron with no clothing.
in the name of....that picture scared me....
I generally see the word "Otaku" as what it was created for, something negative to call someone who's into anime and whatnot. But after I fell for Shokotan (The Otaku queen) did I start to see it in a slightly different light. But what do I see when I hear the word Otaku? Generally either the guy form Densha Otoko (movie), or an unintelligent American Narutard. The latter I'm not quite fond of as I have to deal with them on a daily basis.
Two Words... Pantsu Girl!! Maybe even Danny Choo!
Hmm you mentioned that you had 98 figures (in the video)... I wonder how many you have now ^^. How long back was this clip?
About a year and a half ago. As for figure count - have no idea ^^;
great intervew danny, very awsome. Although the casts didn't seem too serious, kept asking you same type of questions.
well the 1st thing that comes to mind is... ME!!! LOL...
Otaku mhh... makes me only think of people that like anime and mangas, then again i know the deeper meaning since i'm 17... i usualy try to not connect Otaku to the people in the picture above. ^^;
An Otaku is someone who lives his own life, no matter what he's interested in. However I wish I hadn't seen the montage at the top of the article...
Those pictures looks like the normal stereotype. When I think " otaku ", I think of a person that is devoted to his or her hobbies and such. Not that fat kid with glasses that likes sciences, just a normal human being that is really interested in something.
Nice suit there ^^
Man Danny you gave me a real scare there for a few seconds lol. I thought you were in that picture or something. but wow that's really cool that you got an interview for the blog. Im currently taking Japanese so I can pick up a few phrases here and there. Although it is my understanding that it is extremely uncomfortable to be sitting while wearing the stormtrooper armor? juse looks that way for some reason. I have a better image of the term 'Otaku' than what's in that picture. That's just a bit scare though.
in my region they call otakus as 宅男 meaning a person who stays inside the house. kinda true to some extent. other than going to work, i seldom go outside unless it's to look for/buy gundams/figures or very important stuffs.
omg scary pic.. *_*; I dunno the real definition for 'otaku', but for me it's someone who is very interested in anime/manga/video games, and maybe also other Japanese stuffs and celebrities/idols too.
Otaku, in my image look like those in Genshiken and Welcome to the NHK! I am an otaku and am physically nondescript like Sasahara Kanji.
dude, you are king... I bow to thee.. "What is thy bidding, my master..."
For me an otaku is simply someone who's overly obsessive with his hobbies. Am I the only one giving his computer the name (the name that appears in computer networks etc.) of an anime character? ^_^
As much as I'd like to not that is what general otakus looks like, its a sad fact that a lot actually do.
Watching the densha otoko series, I kinda figured that that was overexageration, but it is seriously like that in japan.
Go to akiba, and youll see lots of people wearing plaid, tucked in, etc etc.
Though there are a lot of "normal" people there, there are a lot of people who fit the "stereotype" very well, because thats the way they look/dress/act.
Although I know in north america, the term otaku is either
A) not known by most people
B) something that some people are proud to be.
So there are obvious differences, and I dont think that it is as easy to pick out otakus in north america as it is in Japan.
And yea, there are different types of otaku as someone posted above, basically any hobby has them (trains, cars, airsoft, gundams, figures, anime etc, etc)
my eyes took some 9999 point damage while looking at picture before the video XD LOL~
That pic sure burn my eyes. For the moment i thought that danny was in that pic.. woot!
When i think of otaku in America, i tend to think of weeaboos who are a bit crazier than normal.. and usually 1 or 2 years behind on anime, which really bugs me for some reason. When i think of anime otaku in Japan, i think of .. well the picture above but a lot milder.
oh god... I own that hat... *doesn't wear it outside again* recently, when I hear otaku I either think of Izumi Konata OR weeaboo 13 year olds that surf Gaia all day.
well..i have to take a comment on this one danny ...otaku for me when i think of that word o hear it i recall a way of living,being with real friends, incredible experiences..that is what i recall when i hear or think of that word...by the way nice posts ^^
i guess more elitist because not too many people here are into these kinds of stuff or even have access to these stuff. it's the third world man. ;)
In my Country, altought otaku is still uncommon, but the words otaku was not looks like those kind of people (at that picture) We are ヲタク(wo-ta-ku). (Learned from otakuology from Shoko-tan).
I see people with diverse personality though same interest.
These are kinda extreme looking otaku. Most otaku I know are much more normal looking. Until you see there apartment is filled with figures and idol magazines haha. Some otaku are really cool guys in some ways ... like black belts in karate and stuff.
well from now on i'll imagine this! gee thanks! i think otaku is simply a label applied to geeks who love anime. the same way you might call a geek who loves books a bookworm. nothing bad and nothing good in it, just a term to "quickly" identify a person.
