I'm currently working on migrating the articles to be formatted like the news items template. Comment for articles will be threaded. One of the things I like on the way the article comments are displayed is that one can see your details such as the anime you are watching, figures you are buying etc. Having all of this detail show in a thread will look messy and difficult to read. Do you have any suggestions of how I should handle this? One can obviously see your details when one clicks on your nick name though. How important is it to be able to easily see this information?
for me i seldom read the details of other members. i would much prefer to read comments without the details. may i suggest that the details to be hidden and when someone move his mouse over his avatar, a box with all his details will pop up instead? this way we can save a lot of space in a thread and the comments can be easily read without the need to scroll too much up and down. will be cool if we can implement this for the news items as well. currently the comments layout for news items are very long and hard to read. my humble 2 yen. ^^;
I like his idea. :)
I also think a mouseover pop-up box would be good. And that picture of Sumeragi was distracting me =P
I like this idea :p. Details should pop up in a little bubble if you put your mouse over a user's ava for maybe 2 seconds.
It would be a great idea, but only if this remains as an option... Pop-up windows/balloons I can't really appreciate already, thanks to Windows.
what gordon said...anyway, care to share that sumeragi picture? lol
yea i believe on_mouse_over event would be the most logical solution or like how other forums go - a comment has 2 sections - smaller left for pictures and profile details, bigger right for comments - see example below . . ================================= || || || || || || || profile|| comments || || details|| || || || || =================================
yes i love this layout for the news items. not only does it save space, having all the comments on the right makes it easier to read too.

That's what I think of too
You Gordon, deserve a cookie. However, I can't find a cookie here to save my life. So here's a pineapple bun (melonpan) from HK instead. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/6a/PineappleBun2.jpg/260px-PineappleBun2.jpg
thanks FatB. looks delicious. ^^;
*grabs pineapple bun and runs away* (HOOHOOHOOOHOO~~~)
Sounds good to me too. I do scan these things often. Right now, I'm busy compiling a list for future blackmail... Yes, a javascript mouse over would be nice.
I think you should just a simple border around the Details.
Details are not that important to me as an instant see. I read the comments to read the comments ;)
No details. Not about not reading the members' details, but I believe that is what the Member Profile page is meant for, hence you eliminate the purpose of one huge page right there.
there should be an option for showing all details or hiding all details. i mean after the comment there should be a link "show user details". best would be like in those forums where we have option of showing/hiding the signatures in user control panel.
maybe you can make use of AJAX for the user details. if a user wants to see the details of a particular member, he can click on the target member and small windows containing the details appears ^^
Simple comment boxes would be sufficient. Otherwise load times would be a headache and I have to scroll way down to view comments...
btw, danny u sure know how to tease us. who's that in 005.jpg? looks like Sumeragi from gundam 00. want! ('~')
Lol! I can see almost "them" O_O Slick move. XD
Have to agree, waaaay too much of a tease. Any chance of putting the pic up for us to get a proper look at????? Please
I agree with the people above. Too many different fonts (size and color) would pretty much clutter up the message board. A link to the members profile would be enough.
Details are... details, and Panther (see above) is right, for if you want to know more about one person or wish to stalk him/her after (jesting), you can go to his/her profile page. I just wrote about myself for the kicks, I expect no one to read it (I do not lie on that!), and knowing what I do on a regular basis is not really my concern, for it is not a dating site or such; As members of your community, we are much close to each other already, to exchange jokes and eveoking... umm "experiences of private practice". Expanding more on details would prove somewhat interesting, but I am sure it remains much trivial and it would give you more work. On a different note, care to share more about (and simply share) the image of the 2D girl there? (LOL... I have nothing to lose on that, as my reputation is rather low)
*evoking Anyway, any stalkers here? I hope not. ^^;
sure. i'll stalk u from today onwards. ^^;
I see. Got to watch my back now... as long as you're not like this Matoi girl (for those who don't know what I am talking about, please refer to Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei), I guess it's fine to me... to an extent.
stalker goes jeeeeeeeeeee......................................................................................
LOL!
@D_Blade, Be careful, Gordon has been known to use accomplices in his stalking: http://www.ceiling-cat.com/galleries/ceiling_cat/0004.jpg
Ceilings are dang thin those days... and gotta invest in a sprinkler and fast, at this rate (or a watergun).
ceiling cat sees everything. yes everything! be afraid, be very very afraid. Muhahahha...
I'd prefer the function to hide details, like the hide comments functions on the front page. ^^
seconded
Thirded..
4th pls.
its broke I know - will fix that soon.
How about just mouseover popup box?
Don't really care for details (never updated mine... :P)... but here's an idea: Make it collapsable. Like a "Details" link, or some icon with a simbol... like a paper with stuff written in it. When someone wants to know more details of that person, he clicks on the icon, and a box with the details opens. Will probably require some javascripting, so I don't know if that would be a good idea... But personally, I don't mind not having them. One can always open the profile if interested on what someone is watching. Danny can also post "What you are watching now" topics every now and then... :D
I like this idea, it might be easier that doing java script stuff.
I don't mind the details, maybe cos I read quite fast, but I do agree it will make the comments less cluttered :)
I actually like seeing those details in the news article comments, but nevertheless I agree that they may not be worth the clutter. Moreover, I definitely would prefer the news items to have the same threaded view, without the details showing, than their current layout.
I am not sure what exactly u meant by threaded Danny, but i would love to be able to edit or delete my comment sometimes. BTW Do want 005.JPG
itd be nice if you hover over someones alias, a little option comes up with 3 choices..or more.. 1.) View Profile 2.) Send Message 3.) Share photos..etc, etc that would also incline to remove the details of the user when he posts a comment on an article. Hence, the view profile option. when can we upload our own photos!!! haiyaku onegaishimasu!
Photo upload soon I promise ^^;
I think it's a nice feature, so I hope you'll keep it. No real suggestions on how to handle it in the migration though
Pretty much agree with most of what been said already and I like Gordon's idea in the first post but instead of rollovers, I like how Facebook shows the details in your friends list. You basically have to click a little profile details box in order to expand the details of whomever you want to see. I'm guessing this is javascript/AJAX? I've only seen this done before else where with nav menu hiding and expanding.
nice idea, danny.
Well seeing as I have put my details in once and have not changed yet, probably not so important. Is good for the profile though.
Feels like the current articles comment format uses a lot of vertical space for user details (figures, animes, etc), when the use case here seems to be to read / follow the thread of comments. Here's my <a href="http://moggling.com/choo.jpg">suggested design</a> for comments boxes that pulls all secondary user data together in same color, uses type size to present some hierarchy to the user data, and replaces comment ID with something more user friendly "Permalink" Perhaps some AJAX so that if you want to learn more about a user, clicking on some link (either avatar or name or icon) expands a box with user detail.
Ack, obviously links are auto HTMLized. Working link: http://www.moggling.com/choo.jpg
Nice mock up - thanks!
Firstly, I think the "registered" timestamp is of no importance. It also shows how I have been a stalker and that this is my first contribution/comment, which is embarrassing. Popups are good, but I've got another idea alternate to that: 1) Have info on the RIGHT of current display, i.e. AVATAR | NAME/SITE | INFO 2) Limit the displayed info to (e.g.) 20 characters, preventing spills 3) Users have options of what INFO to display, so for me i might go with: AVATAR | Hiyuu in Singapore | Otaku since 1992 AVATAR | OCCUpation | HOBBIES AVATAR | SITE | #1: Chibi Shana-tan AVATAR | watching: Bamboo Blade, etc This way, you could probably maximize space of the currently 30% title bar of each comment that i see. Might get abit messy tho! and no i'm not born in 1992 lol, but i watched my first anime then.
Thanks all for the feedback.
I quite like seeing what people are buying/watching etc. It gives a certain insight. It's nice. And I couldn't care less about scrolling down lol. Long as I can read the article and corresponding comments it matters not how they are displayed to me. The switching and changing is the only thing that confuses mesa.... lol
I don't read the details about the other guys and I suspect they don't read mines. I read their comments sometimes though.
