The Shanghai maid cafe (more pics here) that opened just a few months ago has already closed. Makes me wonder if the only place a maid cafe would succeed is in Japan? News via ascii.
Haha! Any other country would be like "wtf!?" But not Japan! And its all thanks to the Otaku sub-culture. Other people would just never understand the moe-potential of a maid.
Hmm... Guess I might have to visit Shanghai Ronald @ MickeyD's instead when there. Too bad, so sad.
let me know if you find any interesting stores in Shanghai, i need to do as much research as i can before visiting.
qingy, I'll try but I'll be severly hindered by the fact that the ppl I'm travelling with have opted to take a tour. Against my better judgement, but none speak mandarin and have never been there. Thus I have no idea how much exploring we'll get to do by ourselves.
Well i can imagine it wouldn't be a hit in germany either. This "maid stuff" just isn't so much around here and when... it is... then people connect it to... well *cough* the other kind of service. Also the "Otaku-density" in germany is prolly not even close to the in Japan. (sort of sad though, it's hard to find fellow anime fans in germany that aren't all about the childs stuff and act even worse... not even a idle-worthy german anime IRC channel is around! It's sad... i wanna go to Japan... again.) Well... off to bed now for real, oyasumi. :)
Seconded. (I managed to adapt to this to some respect, though, as you can see from my avatar, teehee...)
Its not as bad as you make it sound. See, theres already three of us on dannys site ... that should mean something ^^ And i heard danny will come to germany to the trend day at Hamburg(?) danny i hope youll come with your stormtrooper Outfit... It could be the international Debut of the Tokyo Dance Trooper xD... ill look for you :>
Make it four :0
They should not be closed if they could have made dolphins happy...use ur "dark" imagination to figure out...
They're closed already? too bad, I was gonna to take a visit when I go there next time. =(
The world is not prepared to realize the potential of maid cafes?
I think you are right...
still too alien for non otakus i guess
Too bad, imagine that if this did work, it would predate (pun intended) the creation of many establishments and services for otaku.
Agree...
Truth is, world would accept these maids wholeheartedly if they had ++ service ifuknowwhatimean
Have this feeling that elsewhere in the world this is viewed a fetish thing. Moe is a Japanese concept that just doesn't take hold in the rest of the world. Their lost...
I bet those 4 made are mad...I wish that they would be mad enough so they would go to Japan..and then beat up that WTF man that tries to slash up the old lady...he deserve a hell!!!!!!!! Muahahahahahahah...Next time if that man would meet me in an dark ally he will never take an anther breath again....NEVER...
Umm... Here's your chill pill.
A pill and coke...always....
i think there was a maid cafe here in Spore too at CHIJMES but it became more of a tourist thing. Not sure if its still around.
it's still around. they celebrated their 1st anniversary last year.
that maid cafe fails at being a maid cafe... the service sucks, the food.. not very palatable as well... oh, and the girls aren't what you expect....
The service = maids sucks = ???
Suck=Dolphin is that what you mean??? Answer now!!!
The food isn't exactly bad but it can do with a slight price cut -_-; As for the maids, I still think the 1st gen are the best
i never visited it but from pictures and reviews i read online, their prices seems to be steep. many of the girl come and go as well. to round it up, i think they need more moe-some cutesy maids. ('~')
that place is a rip off...
I agree, the furniture and the whole decoration don't make me feel like a maid cafe...
Well I hope that place lasts longer than one year and hopefully many more years to come. I like to see maid cafe's open outside of Japan...and stay open.
do people still go there? esp locals? i doubt it...;)
that place is sooo not worth it... moeness level is below 0.001% last time i checked and that was a few weeks ago...
Otaku is just too intense a culture for the world to control...
you mean non-otaku can't stand all that intense awesomeness and epic win. *evil snickering*
Yes... I think they're specially afraid of losing blood from too much nosebleeding...
It's one of those things that are meant to be "only in japan". lol
Hmm, maybe that maid cafe just wasn't operated well? If something is a huge hit in Japan, it should have a similar response in other parts of Asia. Karaoke, instant noodles, anime/manga, dramas, speciality food, etc. I guess I could throw in Japanese AV in there as well. LOL :P
Well with a girl that looks like the one on the far left...who wouldn't close it down...*BAM!* the rest of them look pretty hot though haha.
I"m sorta starting to think maybe the natural environment in Japan contributes to the flourishing of such industries '_'
I heard of a maid cafe in Canada that didn't last too long either. May really just be one of those niche sort of things. I wonder if maid cafes have to compete with places like Hooters?
Oro! I SPOT A TRAP!!! The one on the left! Isn't it a trap? It sure looks like it, or else a pretty damn ugly girl... That explains the café closing too.
I'll grant the one on the left isn't as strikingly good-looking as the other three, but she's not all *that* bad. Certainly not ugly, by any means. Don't get too used to holding 3D girls up to the standards of hotness for 2D girls; no chance to survive.
i expected that meido cafes outside japan will fail 'coz of cultural differences... but hey, i got to admit that the owner has some guts to take the risk of opening one ^^
I guess it's kinda like going to a casino outside of Vegas...not quite the same.
Business might be bad for them because their target demographic are all inside Internet cafes being addicted to MMORPGs/FPs, sometimes even forgetting to eat, drink or sleep.
i think the Hooters in Shanghai took all their business...lol another thing might be that Chinese girls aren't as outgoing as Japanese girls. Ever try striking up a conversation with one? Gets old real fast, and they tend to be spoiled and pampered due to China's one child policy. unlike the low anglers that you'd see in Japan, most of the male population in China are actually closet perverts and society casts a scornful frown on meido related activities. on an unrelated note, i think the meido cafe in Toronto is still open, the last time i drove by they were open, but they boarded up all the windows, it wasn't like that before -__-
dont most japanese families have only one child too? not that i dont believe the one child per family law has screwed up a generation or 2 (i'm also a product of it but grew up in america).
i was also gonna make a Hooter's remark too, betcha that wouldnt take off in japan (unless hire maid cafe types). the biggest draw of a maid cafes ('moe' in general) would be it being a 'safe sexless sexual' fantasy. the statement of the chinese being all 'closet perverts' is a tad harsh, outside of japan there just isn't a large enuf niche for 'safe sexless sexual' fantasies.
Don't get me wrong, but I'm actually happy with this. I mean, I'd love to have Maid Cafes somewhere where I could have access to it, but if Maid Cafes gets mainstream, it would just completely loose it's "charm". In fewer words: Some stuff are better if they remain Japan-exclusive.
A good point.
It looks like it. There was one here in Toronto once. It was doing well, until they switch management. Now it's closed. I would also like to add it was also beside a high school.
You'd think right next to a high school business would've been booming...
I think this culture will still be very foreign to other countries during this period. But I think it will most likely to flourish in few years time. Will take time^^ Feel sorry for that maid cafe in Shangai =( Don't give up^^
Shit... if I had known we have one here, I definitely would have become a regular... too sad :'(
I would love to see one start in London. I'd like to think enough otaku would visit to keep it open. But I just don't have any idea of how big the fandom for them is.
woah. Cute big time. ><

all 4 girls ain't bad looking ^^
yeah no...i think otaku sub-cul is too much a japanese kind of thing. whereas hooters...now that can be exported anywhere. i think it has to do with a frame of mind...otaku=childish behavior with michael jackson thrown in for the perv types. while hooters=daddies porn mixed with cheap scotch and cigars..yeah now thats a good time.
