Shangai Maid Cafe

The Shanghai maid cafe (more pics here) that opened just a few months ago has already closed.
Makes me wonder if the only place a maid cafe would succeed is in Japan?

Haha! Any other country would be like "wtf!?"
But not Japan! And its all thanks to the Otaku sub-culture.
Other people would just never understand the moe-potential of a maid.

qingy, I'll try but I'll be severly hindered by the fact that the ppl I'm travelling with have opted to take a tour. Against my better judgement, but none speak mandarin and have never been there. Thus I have no idea how much exploring we'll get to do by ourselves.

Well i can imagine it wouldn't be a hit in germany either. This "maid stuff" just isn't so much around here and when... it is... then people connect it to... well *cough* the other kind of service.
Also the "Otaku-density" in germany is prolly not even close to the in Japan. (sort of sad though, it's hard to find fellow anime fans in germany that aren't all about the childs stuff and act even worse... not even a idle-worthy german anime IRC channel is around! It's sad... i wanna go to Japan... again.)
Well... off to bed now for real, oyasumi. :)

Hmm, maybe that maid cafe just wasn't operated well? If something is a huge hit in Japan, it should have a similar response in other parts of Asia. Karaoke, instant noodles, anime/manga, dramas, speciality food, etc. I guess I could throw in Japanese AV in there as well. LOL :P

I heard of a maid cafe in Canada that didn't last too long either. May really just be one of those niche sort of things.

I wonder if maid cafes have to compete with places like Hooters?

I'll grant the one on the left isn't as strikingly good-looking as the other three, but she's not all *that* bad. Certainly not ugly, by any means.

Don't get too used to holding 3D girls up to the standards of hotness for 2D girls; no chance to survive.

Business might be bad for them because their target demographic are all inside Internet cafes being addicted to MMORPGs/FPs, sometimes even forgetting to eat, drink or sleep.

i think the Hooters in Shanghai took all their business...lol

another thing might be that Chinese girls aren't as outgoing as Japanese girls. Ever try striking up a conversation with one? Gets old real fast, and they tend to be spoiled and pampered due to China's one child policy. unlike the low anglers that you'd see in Japan, most of the male population in China are actually closet perverts and society casts a scornful frown on meido related activities.

on an unrelated note, i think the meido cafe in Toronto is still open, the last time i drove by they were open, but they boarded up all the windows, it wasn't like that before -__-

dont most japanese families have only one child too? not that i dont believe the one child per family law has screwed up a generation or 2 (i'm also a product of it but grew up in america).
i was also gonna make a Hooter's remark too, betcha that wouldnt take off in japan (unless hire maid cafe types). the biggest draw of a maid cafes ('moe' in general) would be it being a 'safe sexless sexual' fantasy. the statement of the chinese being all 'closet perverts' is a tad harsh, outside of japan there just isn't a large enuf niche for 'safe sexless sexual' fantasies.

Don't get me wrong, but I'm actually happy with this.
I mean, I'd love to have Maid Cafes somewhere where I could have access to it, but if Maid Cafes gets mainstream, it would just completely loose it's "charm".

In fewer words: Some stuff are better if they remain Japan-exclusive.

yeah no...i think otaku sub-cul is too much a japanese kind of thing. whereas hooters...now that can be exported anywhere. i think it has to do with a frame of mind...otaku=childish behavior with michael jackson thrown in for the perv types. while hooters=daddies porn mixed with cheap scotch and cigars..yeah now thats a good time.
