The folks at Kotobukiya certainly treat their guests well - took me for some Tonkatsu the other day. Tonkatsu is pork deep friend in batter and is usually served with rice and plum sauce. See some Tonkatsu in action below.
Ah- Now I know where Nagasarete Airantou's Tonkatsu got it's name. .... ..... NOO! TONKATSU! Looks delicious though.
not just Tonkatsu, all the main animal character in Airantou are name after food name...like Sashimi or else...
LOL! That's why I wanna eat him ^^;
I know about Sashimi. But have never heard of tonkatsu before. I want to try it already~ (especially since I haven't had my dinner yet) Will definitely look for it the next time I go to a Japanese restaurant
Danny little typo there: "Tonkatsu is pork deep FRIEND in batter.." Well, Tonkatsu Is a deep friend to me! Absolutely love it. In Germany there is an almost identical dish - Pork Wiener schnitzel - which is a traditional Austrian dish and popular part of Viennese and Austrian cuisine, consisting of a thin slice of (usually) veal coated in breadcrumbs and fried. Many Japanese tourists to Austria or Germany wonder why so many restaurants in remote villages serve "Japanese" food!!
tonkatsu is a friend when you are hungry so its valid
@ Sean: Little correction: The original "Wiener Schnitzel" is made out of veal, not pork. There is "Schnitzel Wiener Art" (Art=style) which is made out of pork and is more known/popular because pork is much cheaper than veal.
@Sinless, I am well aware, that's why I wrote "- Pork Wiener schnitzel " in the post. I lived in Germany for 7 years, and most everytime I had it, it was Pork-based (your'e right - cause it's cheaper).
Sorry Sean, my fault ^^. I just wanted to say that the original is made out of veal, but I think only 25% of the German`s do know this fact xD
LOL at Typo!
Damn, I saw these deep fried pork cutlets EVERYWHERE in Japan. Weird thing is I only know of one Japanese restaurant in my city that has this on its menu.
Same here, there a couple places that have Chicken Katsu though.. I dont know if its something different in Japanese. Damn I love Katsu.
Hey Danny, which one do you like better, Tonkatsu or Siew Yok?
Siew Yok! 倘然烧肉!
Slew yok? Hmm, in the mood for Butakakuni-don myself.
Tonkatsu is great!! Thought it was korean though... Damn japanese restaurants in Portugal... (they always have more than just japanese food, like korean, chinese, thai...)
Siew Yok is chinese roasted pork, if I didn't read that incorrectly. I like both, but whenever I eat Japanese here I always end up with Tonkatsu on whatever I get. Good stuff.
Ah... Would that be the roast barbecued pork on rice and topped with a fried egg. I love that stuff. Charsiu pork and roast duck combination on rice is truly awesome as well.
that tonkatsu picture sure looks delicious. siew yok rice is also good - so is char siew rice. T~T so hungry now, just finished work and no supper available...
Tonkatsu always comes in curry around here. That option is common in Japan too, yes?
Yeah, curry it is, but that's only if you ordered with the curry ones though...right? Atleast the place I went to have a choice of either the normal ones or the curry ones.
tonkatsu.... just remind me of the Maid cafe i visited in taiwan... Their tonkatsu curry rice.....with a "moe" word written on top of the Tonkatsu with mayonnaise Want to eat!!! This is the website with the tonkatsu: http://blog.yam.com/suehiromaids/article/7998466
hey dont forget here in korea as well there are tonkatsu restraunts that also serve undon if you buy one and i tell ya it is D E LICOUS!!
so you're in korea... want to test our AC performance^^?
the clip sure is fast. ('~')
5 seconds. =_="
Wow, that was so fast. The way they cut the action that is.
*drools* gotta love tonkatsu and one of my faves ^___^ i don't know how to compare the tonkatsu there over here lolz XDDD
Not that big a fan of Tonkatsu to be honest. It's ok, but too high on my eat list when i go to japanese restaurants. Katsu curry is godly tho!!!
Tonkatsu is too dry for me, but luckily, there is miso soup served together with it.
Love eating Tonkatsu ^^. Though of all the Japanese food I love eating... Cha-soba is still my most favourite ^^. Can't forget the one I ate in Uji, Kyoto... Damn I'm feeling hungry now just remembering it :(
Looks delicious, would like to eat it right now t_t
looks delicious. you should try it in ramen next time, but you have to be fast or else it's more runny than crispy ^^ had that served in a japanese restaurant in duesseldorf before christmas. :)
Seconded. Tonkatsu ramen is amazing. As for the soggy thing, at some places I've been to they've served the tonkatsu separately from the ramen, which is nice. Although I do like a bit of soup on the meat too, just for that added moistness! And now I'm hungry...
That looks really good. I want to try some. Someone remind me to try some of this when I go to Japan later this year.
*drools* Looks oishii to me...
Ahhh...tonkatsu. That's one of my all time fave japanese food. The others being every other japanese food out there. LOL. Come to think of it...I think japanese food is the very first thing that got me interested with japan. The second being anime. ^^
Tonkatsu is a pretty standard food in Japan... I ate it A LOT when I was in japan. They also serve it with Kare Rice... and with rice with egg topping. Though I'm not much of a fan of pork meat, cow meat is expensive in Japan... so Tonkatsu was essencial to satisfy my needs on meat. :P
It looks delicious, I'm a big fan of curry Tonkatsu ^^
Tonkatsu... Haven't had one for a while due to locations issue, but I've recently managed to one something like it so I don't have to wait too long for a proper one again.
Wow Danny, I absolutely LOVE tonkatsu. It's one of my favorite Japanese inventions to date!
That seriously looks great, I will consider eating it.
i love deep friend pork! Especially with the tangy tonkatsu sauce.....mmmmm can't get enough of it
I don't remember the name but there was this great tonkatsu place in Akihabara, near by back alley of Sega arcade building I believe. Tonkatsu was so juicy, I can still savor it, yum :P
crap, that looks good.
Where's the beef? I am confident that phrase will never get old!
Looks yummy, love deep fried stuff! Too bad my good fer nothing school stopped selling deep fried stuff...
Had a chicken tonkatsu curry in a japanese bar a few weeks ago, was absolutley lovely, especially as my company paid for it ;)
I had Tonkatsu before. It was pretty good. :)
My parents own a Japanese food spot in a food court...so yeah, got lotsa' tonkatsu...
