Abayo HD DVD

Abayo HD DVD
Toshiba is officially pulling out of the HD DVD market leaving Blu-Ray to dominate the market until the new format comes out in 2100.
Anybody purposely went out to buy a HD DVD player?
Maybe Toshiba lost because of the size of their HD DVD players ...
"Abayo" [あばよ] means "Goodbye" and is a colloquial form of "Sayonara." It also has a "goodbye forever" nuisance.
Thanks to Panther Hunt for sending this in via NYTimes and Akihabara News.

wow. looking at the size of that player makes me think that it has to be really really old. since it also looks heavy

That isn't only a HD DVD player, thats also a recorder with 1 TB hard drive and also an amplifier aka av receiver which can decode Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD codecs, this thing is beast in terms of sound and image system, hope blu-ray launches a similar thing one day.

As my late grandfather used to say: "the heavier the equipment (sound systems) the better and he was right ^^ one the latest sound systems requires two men to lift it up but I can't recall its name.

You do know this is all based on rumors right?
There hasn't been any official confirmation of this from toshiba, nor a denial, but it isn't official yet.

Yeah, but still, That newsreport was based on a lead from a person who would like to remain ''unknown''

I think it's fishy.
I'll believe it when Toshiba announces it, if I had 5 cents for every rumor about nvidia products that didn't come true, I'd have at least two Euro :P

I think Toshiba is has accepted that they lose the war this time. I read a post on engadget last friday about them probably looking into building blu ray players I think. I've forgotten the details. LOL

So far I'm watching the HD wars as a spectator and won't buy a player for either format any time soon.

Wake me up by the time there is something like libdvdcss for the winning format to get rid of the region lockout and copy protection crap. No, I won't copy the discs, I just want to be able to play them on the hardware and the OSes (e. g. Linux) of MY choice.

Anyway, in my opinion the DVD is still good enough. I don't have a HDTV. ^^

Yeah, I agree with you. I myself choose blueray because I know PS3 can play blueray.
Xbox maybe strong in US, but no compare for PS3 in the global market.

This just means - save up for a PS3. No need for a Blu-Ray player, if you are going to be gaming anyway.

The funny thing is that they actually sold more HD DVD players than Blu-Ray plyers, but since the ps3 comes with a Blu-Ray player in it, it meant that more households ended up with sony's format.
.
What I want now is a cheap burner so I can put 10 dvds worth of anime into 1 disk. It will things much more convenient.

It's not official yet, though NHK and Reuters already announced they got the information from an unofficial source inside Toshiba HQ.

HD-DVD sold lots of players because they were cheaper than any other blu-ray counterpart.

And also, some interesting bits of information:
- HD-DVD is a more consolidated standard. Every player will work with any HD-DVD media just fine. Blu-ray isn't like that. Early adopters will know how screwed up the first revisions of Blu-ray were;
- HD-DVD is a cheaper technology, though less advanced. Doesn't require blue lasers, thus making it more a DVD upgrade rather than reformulation;

What happened then?
1. Blu-ray readers were sold with PS3s;
2. Sony just have more money and more power. Major studios supported blu-ray, even knowing it's still an incomplete standard;
3. The whole media rushed the format war. Because quite frankly, it was becoming annoying and bad for consumers. Not much different from CD+R CD-R DVD+R DVD-R... or even Betamax.

As for meeself, I wish HD-DVD remained alive... not really for movies, but maybe as a backup format.

You know, cheap recording drives and cheap media would be just enough for me to adopt the format.

You really think it will take till 2100 for the next format to come out? DVD only came out a little more than 10 years ago and VHS 20 years before that. maybe the next format will be out in five years by that pattern? Possibly in time for the next generation of game systems to include it?

What will happen to Paramount and especially Universal now, because both of them are still using HD DVD? For me this what now happened wasn't a surprise, but I didn't expect it to happen so soon. Lately they've sold much more Blu-Ray discs in the USA and Japan than HD DVDs. I'm not sure about the situation in Europe though, but I guess Blu-Ray is more popular here too.

By the way, it is funny, that there isn't any special reason to buy that cheapest Sony Blu-Ray player, because PS3 has the same technology, but is less expensive.

It's interesting to see the evolution of Blu-Ray. I think I read, that soon there'll be Blu-Ray discs with five layers, so that would mean huge capacity.

The ps3 is what won it for Sony. Every single ps3 sold was a new BluRay player in someone's home. There was just no way that HD-DVD could compete with that. I myself have a ps3, so I'm glad that BluRay won. I'm currently watching Utawarerumono on BluRay, and it is simply gorgeous.
