When I first heard the term "GITS", I had no idea that it was being used for "Ghost In The Shell." A "Git" has a different meaning in the UK and grew up using it to call people names. Does a "Git" mean anything in your region? Via Neta. Rozen Maiden OP below.SAC OP1 below.
As far as I know, I don't think git has any meaning, unless its used as in "git going, begone, leave, etc). I'm don't tend to keep up with the latest slang, we have enough illiterate people on the internet who don't know how to spell, or pronounce for that matter.

Well in my area Git is just used for Get Lost. I am versed in the Brit very of git from watching British sit coms and and DrWho during my miss spent youth. I am thinking that most kid now a days would also be aware of the British use of git from the Harry Potter books and movies.

yeah 'git' isn't used much at all. GitS with proper capitalisation and context will be unambiguous, and is needed because GitS: SAC 2nd GIG is way too long to type out fully.

Name's too big to make stuff like Furuba (for Fruits Basket), or hundreds of other examples. I guess GITS doesn't have a meaning in portuguese.

I thought that GITS SAC 2ND GIG was a funny enough name, without knowing that, lol. And, somehow, Motoko looks almost as wrong as the guys do there.
I"m not surprised at rhe usage of GitS there, it's just like how they shorten Lord of the Rings to LotR... and "Lelouch of the Rebellion" shortens to LotR as well.

While I'm pretty sure that the word 'git' has close to no meaning here in Singapore, I grew up secluded and close to Western culture, so a 'git' means an idiot, in my lingo. I remember describing a particularly annoying and arrogant classmate of mine with that name, back when I was 10. Ah, the memories.
